Civil Rights attorney Norman Siegel has held public readings of United States founding documents for many years. Following this presidential election, he started work on Declaration 17, a collaborative project with many individuals rather than organizations, and no politicians. People are invited to sign onto this declaration at its website, declaration17.com. Our emphasis is on civics education, as it seems for decades students have not been taught the basics about American democracy. We see the consequences of that lack of education today.
At this event, a reading will be conducted of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and UN Declaration of Human Rights, along with a discussion of key points.
