Our Ethics in Action series continues, focusing on police-community relations in New York City.
One of the most important ethical challenges facing our country and city today is the breakdown of trust between law enforcement and the broader community. The mutual trust of the citizenry and the police force constitute a vital underpinning of social stability, safety, and the wellbeing of the citizenry. Hence it is especially important to dialogue on this important issue and to identify the values that could form the basis of a moral consensus to support the common good.
We will hear from New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill on his community policing initiative. Following the commissioner's address, at 7pm, Professor Jeffrey Sachs will moderate a panel discussion on the ethical dimension of police-community relations with the following people:
Kassandra Frederique, New York State Director, Drug Policy Alliance
Robert Gangi, Director, Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP)
Christopher Dunn, Associate Legal Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU)
