Ethics and the Theater will present: On Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson.
Norman and Ethel Thayer, a married couple on the border between middle and old age, have retreated to their New England lake house as they have every summer for decades, performing the familiar rituals of unpacking, trading playful jibes. This year, however, death and debility are a constant presence, lurking in the wings when not directly invoked by Norman, only half in jest. The visit of their daughter, accompanied by her fiancé and his son, is thus an occasion not just to relive happy moments but also to come to air and try to dissolve the tensions that have driven parents and child apart.
Come at 6:30 pm for a reception and after the reading participate in a discussion of the ethical issues of the play led by Betsy Ungar.
