Love is a fundamental aspect of human life. Yet, English has just one word to label a variety of different types of relationships that we engage in during our lives. We love our partner, our children, our profession, our nation, or our god. The ancient Greeks made distinctions among these different types of love, using different words, none of which, incidentally, map exactly to our modern conception of romantic love.
