DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nThe talk will be partially an autobiography\, or memoir\, of Marc Kagan’s almost fifty years in the labor movement\, his entry coming just a few years after the NYC fiscal crisis\, which marked the advent of the (still-ongoing) Neoliberal era. Kagan will also provide a critique and assessment of the labor movement today\, and its responses to this moment of crisis\, as we struggle both to preserve and reinvigorate democracy and address massive inequality. He taught high school Social Studies for ten years; Zohran Mamdani later pronounced him his favorite high school teacher. He got his Ph.D. in History from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2023\, teaches Labor Politics at Brooklyn College\, and is the author of Take Back the Power: The Fall and Rise and Fall of NYC’s Transport Workers Union Local 100. Instead\, we will share our thoughts and observations about the impacts upon us and upon society as well as our own survival strategies. In-person only. \nAbout Dr. Pierre Arty\nPierre Arty\, M.D. is a member of the Ethical Culture Social Service Board and currently serves as the Chief Psychiatric Officer for Housing Works\, where he provides psychiatric supervision\, direct psychopharmacological treatment for adults and those with substance use disorder\, and oversees the Wellness program. \nDr. Arty was born in Cap-Hatien\, Haiti and raised in East Flatbush\, Brooklyn. He received his M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and his B.A. from Columbia College of Columbia University. He is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine. He is also a Board member of World Compassion Fellowship\, an international humanitarian and development organization whose mission is to provide holistic development and care for the individual\, the family\, and the community. \nDr. Arty is a member of the Social Service Board of NYSEC and the author of the book Life and Death and the Things in Between\, published in 2017 and available on Amazon.

RSVP HERE\nTrash! has been described as a fascinating\, no-bullshit account of two decades in the waste industry\, offering a vivid portrait of the heroic labor\, anarchic spirit\, and often violent conditions experienced by the people who keep our cities clean. \nSimon Paré-Poupart began working as a garbageman to pay for school. After earning graduate degrees\, he pursued careers in more “respectable” professions\, yet ultimately found himself back on the truck—drawn by the physical intensity of the work\, the camaraderie of his rough-and-tumble colleagues\, and a sense of honesty and freedom that no other job had provided. \nRobin Nagle’s Picking Up is an ethnography of New York City’s Department of Sanitation based on more than a decade of work with the Department\, including time serving as a uniformed sanitation worker. In addition to her role with DSNY\, Nagle is a Clinical Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies in New York University’s School of Liberal Studies. She describes her scholarship as part of the emerging interdisciplinary field of discard studies. Before going into government\, he was the Executive Director and then President of Human Rights First\, a U.S.-based human rights advocacy organization. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, and former Deputy Chief of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit Michael Osgood. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis. \nTickets\n>>> $45 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant. \nAbout Playwright Susan Charlotte\nSusan’s multi-faceted career started with Prism Blues. Based on her work as a prison counselor\, the play earned her a place in Columbia’s MFA program and won the prestigious Joseph Kesselring Award. Her 60 full-length & one-act plays have been produced throughout the country. They include: The Shoemaker starring Danny Aiello\, directed by Antony Marsellis; She’s Of A Certain Age; The Round Table (w/ Oscar & Tony winner Peter Stone)\, and When Truth Is Not Enough. Her play\, Love Divided By\, was produced by the Actors Studio and was made into a film with an original score by Philip Glass. The film reopened MoMA’s Titus II theatre. Her other films include: Something Like That\, A Broken Sole\, Come On (Hamptons Film Festival.) Her TV credits include; Did You Know My Husband? with Louise Lasser & Carole Shelley (PBS); The Comedy Zone with Patty Duke & Paul Reiser (CBS); Guiding Light and Loving (CBS). \nSusan authored the acclaimed books Creativity and Creativity In Film and has written for NY Magazine and Playbill. She was also a professor at Columbia U.\, NYU\, and City College. She is the founding artistic director of Food For Thought Productions and Cause Celebre.

Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, and field trips. \nRSVP is essential to guarantee your place and for planning purposes.
