Film & Discussion: Color Adjustment by Marlon Riggs

May 29, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Color Adjustment is the second documentary we are showing by acclaimed director Marlon Riggs (following last month’s Ethnic Notions) as part of an attempt to gain insight into how much subtle racism in the media continues to influence our perceptions. Color Adjustment analyzes the evolution of American television’s portraits of African Americans from 1948 through 1988.

Marlon Riggs was a writer, filmmaker, and social activist who died in 1994 from AIDS. The New Yorker, in writing about the retrospective of his work at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in February, described his films as, “essays in the truest sense of the word – attempts at describing the world both metaphorically and actually.”

Discussion follows. Presented by the Ethical NYC Ethical Action Committee.
