COVID-19 attacks our physical bodies\, but also the cultural foundations of our lives\, the toolbox of community and connectivity that is for the human what claws and teeth represent to the tiger. Join us as anthropologist Wade Davis explores how COVID-19 signals the end of the American era. \nWade Davis is a writer and photographer whose work has taken him from the Amazon to Tibet\, Africa to Australia\, Polynesia to the Arctic. Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013\, he is currently Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at UBC. Author of 23 books\, including One River\, The Wayfinders and Into the Silence\, winner of the 2012 Samuel Johnson prize\, the top nonfiction prize in the English language\, he holds degrees in anthropology and biology and received his Ph.D. in ethnobotany\, all from Harvard University. In 2016\, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2018 he became an Honorary Citizen of Colombia. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. This month’s play is Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles\, 1992: \nIn TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES\, 1992\, Anna Deavere Smith exposes the social\, economic and political issues underlying the Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King verdict through the words of people directly and indirectly involved in them\, from L.A.P.D. chief Daryl Gates to a juror on the King trial to residents of South Central. \nThis month’s play stars Mikayla Bartholomew\, Shavanna Calder\, Chloe Simone Crawford\, and Asia Howard\, and is directed by Logan Pitts. Following the play reading\, Betsy Ungar will lead an audience discussion of the ethical issues of the play.
