SUMMARY:Pathways to Ethical Culture: "Felix Adler’s Philosophical Challenge" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Adler was a philosopher with a moral mission facing an urgent problem that we continue to confront in the modern world: How do we ensure that the human being has inherent worth? How do we philosophically guarantee that human beings are not merely expendable when doing away with them will serve a compelling purpose? Adler believed that traditional religion did not effectively do this\, nor could science. Where did he turn to find the answer? This presentation will delve into his creative solution which inspires Ethical Culture to this day. \nThis series in an orientation to Ethical Culture directed at our newer members as well as veterans of our Society who want to deepen their knowledge of Ethical Culture. The interested public is invited as well. Each session will be a combination of a presentation and a discussion. \nFor more information and to receive recommended readings\, please contact Membership Coordinator Maggie Determann at mdetermann@nysec.org. \nAbout this series: \nEthical Culture is a humanist community that esteems ethics as its core precept\, human worth and dignity as its central value\, and community\, sustainability and freedom as its principal goals.  Where did Ethical Culture come from?  What does it say to us today regarding the human condition? What is its unique contribution for our lives and our future? \nJoin us for a five part program that explores the origins\, the history and the values of Ethical Culture – from its founding a century-and-a-half ago to the 21st Century.   The topics will be: \n\nThe social and intellectual roots of the Ethical Culture Movement.\nFelix Adler’s philosophical challenge – How to prove inherent worth of the human being in a harsh and precarious world when one abandons traditional reliance on God and the supernatural?\nEthical Culture’s rich social justice history in the age of reformation and the modern era.\nThe NY Society and Ethical Culture’s place in today’s world of modern humanism.\nLiving Ethical Culture – How it offers a life of meaning\, growth and authenticity. The Program is facilitated by the Society’s Leaders: Dr. Joseph Chuman and Dr. Richard Koral.   Meets monthly for one hour on the 3rd Wednesday of each month\, March through July at 2:00 p.m. on Zoom.\n\nClick here to join at start time | ID 814 7073 5630 | Passcode 158119\nFor complete join details\, please also see our daily event emails. \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: Disappearing Moon Café by Sky Lee (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Disappearing Moon Cafe was a stunning debut novel that has become a Canadian literary classic. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor complete access information\, including Meeting ID\, please see this week’s Ethical Weekly email or contact Gunther.\n \nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time.
