SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Dr. Bentley Gibson: "Discovering Your Race\, Gender and Sexuality Implicit Biases" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bentley Gibson\, CEO of the Bias Adjuster and founder of the Discovering Your Race\, Gender and Sexuality Implicit Biases workshop\, will present the latest research on implicit bias in order to increase awareness about how it impacts real-world behaviors and relationships. \nPrior to attending\, the platform audience is invited to take the Project Implicit bias test via a link the link below. The audience will learn effective strategies to mitigate implicit biases so that they may develop more positive attitudes about negatively stereotyped groups. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nFor full join information\, please also see this week’s Ethical Weekly email. \nPresider: Sarah Sprott \nShared Charity: Music on the Inside \n\nInstructions for Completing the Implicit Bias/Association Test \nWhat will you need? \nComputer or Smartphone \nAbout the Implicit Association Test \nImplicit biases are associations about social groups that people may not be aware that they possess. There is research implicating implicit bias as having an impact on many areas such as how medical/health professionals treat patients/clients\, employment discrimination\, and achievement disparities in academia . The workshop will increase participants awareness of implicit race\, gender and sexuality biases. \nYou can voluntarily take the implicit association test before your Implicit Bias training with Dr. Gibson. Taking these assessments will increase your general awareness about implicit bias as a theory\, as well as give you an understanding about your own biases. \nBelow you can find the instructions to take the assessments. Please keep in mind that you do not have to enter any identifying information. Your personal results are for your eyes only. Taking these assessments may feel a little uncomfortable\, but keep an open mind! You will learn more about the assessments in the training and have the opportunity to ask questions and further discuss. \nInstructions\n\n1. Go to: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html. Select “Project Implicit Social Attitudes” DO NOT ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. \n2. You can take the tests on your computer or phone. Be sure to select the “touchscreen” option if you use your phone. Read the “Preliminary Information” and click “I wish to proceed”. \n3.There are many tests on this website you can take. For this course\, you will take THREE tests: Race (Black-White)\, Sexuality\, and Gender (CAREER). Each test will take you approximately 10-15 minutes\, so pace yourself and try to give yourself breaks in between instead of taking them all back to back. It is also important to note that while the race test is mainly for Black vs. White\, there is research on many racial/ethnic/nationality groups using the same test. The information you learn from these tests can be transferred to how you understand multiple social groups. \n4. After each test\, please write down (or screenshot) your results that you will receive at the end of the test that states….. “your data suggest you have a __________ automatic preference for __________ compared to __________ . See the example below of what results look like for RACE IAT. The results for the other tests are the same just different social groups. \nPlease email Dr. Bentley Gibson at bgibson@thebiasadjuster.com if you have any questions. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.
