DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nDarwin’s proofs overthrew the traditional view that the world was created as we saw it; that there was a natural order we could rely on. Instead\, he showed us that the world is ever-changing and is always struggling to find a new balance. How can we find new balance in our own lives in an ever-changing world? \nDr. Richard Koral has been a Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture since 2017. Richard holds degrees from New York University and New York Law School\, and a Doctor of Ministry in interfaith pastoral counseling from the Hebrew Union College. He is the Leader Consultant to the Social Service Board and numerous committees in the Society. Active with the American Ethical Union\, Richard served on its Board as president from 2012 to 2015. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. \n\nMore Interviews TBA!\nAbout Moving the Bar: My Life as a Radical Lawyer by Michael Ratner \nMichael Ratner (1943–2016) was one of America’s leading human rights lawyers. He worked for more than four decades at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) becoming first the Director of Litigation and then the President of what Alexander Cockburn called “a small band of tigerish people.” He was also the President of the National Lawyers Guild. In 2007 he won the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship. \nRatner handled some of the most significant cases In American history. This book tells why and how he did it. \nHis last case\, which he worked on until he died\, was representing truth-telling whistleblower and now political prisoner Julian Assange\, the editor of WikiLeaks. \nRatner “moved the bar” by organizing some 600 lawyers to successfully defend habeas corpus\, that is\, the ancient right of someone accused of a crime to have a lawyer and to be brought before a judge. \nZachary Sklar\, edited “Moving the Bar” for OR Books\, and Michael Smith\, who wrote the book’s introduction. \nBuy the book here. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. He currently teaches on human rights at Columbia University and Hunter College\, and has taught at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, and many other periodicals.
