DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nNational service has the potential to bring Americans together to tackle the competing crises of an ongoing pandemic\, a worsening climate crisis\, and increasing economic inequality. AmeriCorps\, the nation’s largest national service program\, does work of tremendous importance in our communities —but problems remain around who is able to serve in the program. AmeriCorps must embrace a new vision that centers equity and accessibility to ensure that all who want to serve are able to serve. \nRobert Godfried is a policy fellow at Next100\, a think tank focused on empowering those with lived experience to impact policy in that area. Robert’s work focuses on increasing equity and inclusion in AmeriCorps and the new Civilian Climate Corps. He draws on his experience in tenant organizing as an AmeriCorps member to inform his work advocating for better public service opportunities. He has previously worked as a field organizer for Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 presidential campaign\, and as an associate at a progressive political digital marketing firm. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. SUMMARY:SSB Film Screening: Mothers of Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Ethical NYC Social Service Board. \nMany parents find it hard to imagine being away from a child for a week. Now\, imagine being separated for 10 or 20 years. Mothers of Bedford explores the effects of a long-term prison sentence on the mother-child relationship: \nFilmmaker Jenifer McShane spent four years following five incarcerated mothers at the New York maximum-security penitentiary\, Bedford Hills Correctional Facility She interviewed them\, their children and other family members\, the children’s caregivers\, and prison employees and volunteers. \nEighty percent of women in US prisons today are mothers of school-age children. McShane’s documentary depicts the stresses that prison places on a family while also painting a beautiful picture of the power of a mother’s unconditional love as they take parenting classes\, enroll in in-prison education\, phone in for parent-teacher conferences\, spend time with their kids at the prison’s Children’s Center. We see the struggles and joys these women face as prisoners and mothers. \nFollowing the film\, the Social Service Board’s Bonnie Bean and Marlene Williamson will lead a discussion about the effects of incarceration on parents and children. \nVisit our website to learn more about the Social Service Board\, including their Televisiting Program that helps children maintain contact with an incarcerated family member.
