DESCRIPTION:Join the Society and our allies for a screening of a short documentary Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem\, organized by 4th Universalist. Additionally\, two speakers will help push for the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act via a phoning call to action. It’s already fairly planned out so co-sponsorship would mostly mean having West End Synagogue show their support by listing their name on any materials and inviting people (no money\, on Zoom\, and little effort!). \nThe screening of Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem will be followed by a discussion about the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act with: \n\nDerrick Hamilton\, a formerly incarcerated man who became a jailhouse lawyer and whose exoneration lead him to push for the bill\nRebecca Brown\, Director of Policy at the Innocence Project\, who will give an overview of why so many innocent people plead guilty to misdemeanors (to avoid jail time and the legal process) as well as information on the bill.\n\nQ&A will follow\, along with instructions for how to contact your legislators to support the bill. \nHosted by 4th Universalist and co-sponsored by the New York Society for Ethical Culture and others. \nRegister in advance here: http://tinyurl.com/MisdemeanorProblem

DESCRIPTION:From familiar fairy tales and legends Angela Carter created an absorbing collection of dark\, sensual\, fantastic stories. When she died in 1992 her reputation instantly went from cultish to canonical. Margaret Atwood said: “She was a quirky\, original\, and baroque stylist\, a trait especially marked in The Bloody Chamber – her vocabulary a mix of finely tuned phrase\, luscious adjective\, witty aphorism\, and hearty\, up-theirs vulgarity.” \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. SUMMARY:AEU Salon on Biocentrism w/ Curt Collier (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Eighty to ninety years after its founding\, Ethical Culture saw the rise of Humanism as a new organizing set of ideas in which. to describe the aspirations of the Ethical Movement. It can be argued that this was very different from Adler’s original philosophical orientation and revealed the triumph of “Deweyism” over “Adleriansim.” Some Ethical Culture congregations went even further afield\, stating that Ethical Culture and Unitarianism were more aligned in thought. Sixty years later\, we have to ask whether Humanism has served our ideology well. \nFor the past 20 years\, Curt Collier\, the newly installed Leader of the Bergen Ethical Society and presenter for this upcoming salon\, challenged the notion that congregations need to be aligned with Humanism\, and has called for a return to some of Adler’s original thought. He argues that Ethical Biocentrism is more consistent with Adler’s Ethical Culture than Ethical Humanism\, and therefore\, is a better model going forward. This salon will cover these topics\, including a discussion of what is Ethical Biocentrism and what an Ethical Culture congregation who adopts this philosophy would do differently. \nAbout our Presenter:\n\nAn Ethical Culture Leader for over 25 years\, Curt Collier has served five Ethical Societies\, and is a co-founder of the Ethical Society of Austin. He is currently the Leader of the Bergen Ethical Culture Society and a Consulting Leader for the Silicon Valley Society.
