DESCRIPTION:Our Young Ethical Explorers Fall Season starts soon and newcomers are welcome! \nYoung Ethical Explorers is our Humanist “Sunday school” designed for youngsters from ages 4 to 13\, and takes place concurrent with our Sunday Platform meetings every Sunday from 11:00am-12:30pm. Sessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, and field trips. \nYouth Programs Director Audrey Kindred will be hosting an in-person “open house” info session for interested parents at 10:00am on Sunday\, September 11\, before our first YEE session of the season at 11:00am. SUMMARY:Nori Rost: One More Light
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nEach year on September 10th is World Suicide Awareness Day. The statistics are staggering: every 40 seconds\, someone completes suicide. For each person who dies by suicide\, there are at least 40 more attempts. Many of us have been touched by this tragic event in our own lives. In this platform cantata\, Dr. Rost will explore the many reasons that can lead people to attempt (and in many cases\, complete) suicide and how we can help ourselves and others find a way through the shadows. \nPrior to joining the New York Society for Ethical Culture as its newest Leader\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Before that\, she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church\, a queer Christian denomination\, for almost 20 years. She is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. This course will take a deep and thoughtful dive into James Baldwin’s 1963 book\, The Fire Next Time: \nA national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963\, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. \nAt once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin’s early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice\, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document.
