DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nFrom the 1960s to the 1990s\, Shirley Collier worked as a hairdresser in two small south Texas towns. Over the years\, she collected scores of recipes from patrons who brought in goodies to share. These recipes were scribbled on scraps of paper\, on the backs of blank checks or receipts and often contained personal notes and bits of wisdom\, as well. \nHer son Curt Collier will share these recipes and will prepare some of the wacky\, weird\, and wonderful delectables from Medina County\, Texas\, for you to taste. He will also share what he learned from the women who created these recipe cards and what this unique collection of tidbits says about life and living it well on a budget. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests! \nJoin Online\nClick Here to RSVP on Zoom \nAbout Curt Collier\nCurt Collier is the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County and a passionate advocate for community redevelopment. He works as a consultant\, helping nonprofits enhance their capacity to make a positive impact. Additionally\, Collier is a professor of Ethics and Ethics in Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University and serves as a Community Planning Specialist for the National Park Service. He leads various initiatives\, including job training programs for area youth\, support for environmental nonprofits in New Jersey\, and projects aimed at improving scientific literacy among young adults. Collier is also the consulting Leader for the Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley\, and the Austin Ethical Society. \nMonthly Collection\nYoung Ethical Explorers AIDS Walk NYC Team \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. SUMMARY:Coming of Age
DESCRIPTION:“Coming-of-age” marks a young person’s transition from childhood to adulthood. Families are invited to enroll their tweens and early teens in our coming-of-age program\, whose guiding principle is to provide a safe and creative environment\, and ethical grounding\, to empower every young adult to blossom within our community. The age at which this transition takes place varies in society\, as does the nature of the transition. It can be a simple legal convention or part of a ritual as practiced in many societies and religions. \nIn our diverse community\, we welcome young people who are seeking an opportunity to mark their life path with a process and celebration focused on \n\nSelf-inquiry\nWorld awareness\nPersonal and social responsibility\nCommunity service\n\nRecognizing that children mature at different rates\, we meet with children and parents to determine when a child is ready\, and the curriculum is geared to the needs of the individual and family. With a Humanist anchor\, we will explore a world of ideas and values together.

SUMMARY:Leader Workshop with Curt Collier: Sacred and Profane Spaces\, and Somewhere in Between
DESCRIPTION:What does it truly mean when someone says\, “this place is sacred?” \nLeader Curt Collier has spent years delving into that question—both through his work in environmental restoration and in helping communities reconnect with land that was once polluted or neglected. Drawing on his deep experience in community development\, Collier explores how we assign meaning to the places around us\, and how those meanings can inspire healing\, stewardship\, and transformation. \nHe is the co-author of Place Attachment and Meaning: Nurturing Nature Relationships\, a collaboration with research social scientist Dr. Kathleen Wolf. Their work illustrates how “place attachment”—the emotional bond people form with specific locations—can be harnessed to foster deeper environmental engagement at the local level. \nIn this thought-provoking workshop\, Collier will guide participants through the ways sacred spaces have been recognized and created throughout history\, what sets them apart from ordinary spaces\, and how liminal (or transitional) practices can be used today to protect the inherent worth and dignity of both people and the natural world. \nWhether you’re an environmental advocate\, a spiritual seeker\, or simply curious about the power of place\, this workshop offers a meaningful exploration of how we can reclaim and redefine sacredness in our modern lives. \nAbout Curt Collier\n\nCurt Collier\, Leader\,  has been an activist decades.  He has built nonprofits\, founded a congregation\, and helped create job training programs in 20 states and on five national parks.  He works with dozens of organizations each year to raise their capacity to do good in the world\, and raises grant money to support multiple nonprofits.  These workshops are based on the best practices he has learned over this 40 year history of engagement.
