SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Marc Kagan: A Journey Through the Labor Movement in Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nThe talk will be partially an autobiography\, or memoir\, of Marc Kagan’s almost fifty years in the labor movement\, his entry coming just a few years after the NYC fiscal crisis\, which marked the advent of the (still-ongoing) Neoliberal era. Kagan will also provide a critique and assessment of the labor movement today\, and its responses to this moment of crisis\, as we struggle both to preserve and reinvigorate democracy and address massive inequality. RSVP to watch on Zoom. \nAbout Marc Kagan\nRadicalized by his experiences as a tenant organizer when “the Bronx was burning\,” Kagan “joined the working class.” He was a transit worker for almost twenty years\, and was briefly a top officer of TWU Local 100. He taught high school Social Studies for ten years; Zohran Mamdani later pronounced him his favorite high school teacher. He got his Ph.D. in History from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2023\, teaches Labor Politics at Brooklyn College\, and is the author of Take Back the Power: The Fall and Rise and Fall of NYC’s Transport Workers Union Local 100. SUMMARY:‘Coming to Terms with Challenging Times’ with Dr. Pierre Arty
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next in our series of sessions exploring the psycho-emotional impact of the currently shifting political and social atmosphere in America and across the world. This will be a sharing of our own fears and concerns as well as our resilience and empowerment as we seek to cope. This will not be a political debate. Instead\, we will share our thoughts and observations about the impacts upon us and upon society as well as our own survival strategies. In-person only. \nAbout Dr. Pierre Arty\nPierre Arty\, M.D. is a member of the Ethical Culture Social Service Board and currently serves as the Chief Psychiatric Officer for Housing Works\, where he provides psychiatric supervision\, direct psychopharmacological treatment for adults and those with substance use disorder\, and oversees the Wellness program. \nDr. Arty was born in Cap-Hatien\, Haiti and raised in East Flatbush\, Brooklyn. He received his M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and his B.A. from Columbia College of Columbia University. He is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine. He is also a Board member of World Compassion Fellowship\, an international humanitarian and development organization whose mission is to provide holistic development and care for the individual\, the family\, and the community. \nDr. Arty is a member of the Social Service Board of NYSEC and the author of the book Life and Death and the Things in Between\, published in 2017 and available on Amazon.
