Stop by for beautiful music in December. \nThis week features jazz bassist Marco Panascia with pianist Jon Weber. \nAbout Marco Panascia and Jon Weber\nMarco Panascia (pronounced: pana-SEE-ah) is an Italian-born bassist\, composer and educator living in New York City since 2002\, and a recently minted U.S. citizen. His proficiency in many different musical settings\, and his strong doubling skills on the acoustic and the electric basses have earned him wholehearted praise worldwide. Panascia has made a name for himself by being featured in the groups of several jazz luminaries\, such as Kenny Barron\, Andy Bey\, Kevin Mahogany\, Mike Stern\, Randy Brecker\, Eric Reed\, Dado Moroni\, Alvin Queen\, Bobby Watson\, Peter Bernstein\, Tamir Hendelman\, Claudio Roditi\, and David Kikoski\, and by regularly appearing in some of the world’s top music festivals and venues\, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival\, the Hollywood Bowl\, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Panascia is also known for his tenure with young jazz piano sensation Eldar Djangirov\, which delivered sold-out performances in three continents\, and culminated in two celebrated CD releases on the Sony BMG Masterworks label: “Live at the Blue Note”\, and “re-imagination”\, which received a 2008 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Stop by for beautiful music in December. \nThis week features Indian Classical music performed by Ravi Rao on sitar and Maitreya Padukone on tablas. \nAbout Ravi Mao and Maitreya Padukone\nDr. Ravi Rao has studied sitar with leading performers such as Pandit Krishna Bhatt and Ustad Shahid Parvez and received music instruction from his mother\, Mrs. Anasuya Rao. Pandit Krishna Bhatt is the protege of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. Ustad Shahid Parvez hails from the illustrious Imdadkhani Etawah Gharana of sitar. Dr. Rao has played extensively in the Tri-State area and has performed at venues including the Lincoln Center\, the Lotus Fine Arts Center\, the Museum of Natural History\, the Noguchi Museum\, the Rubin Museum\, and for Brooklyn Raga Massive. \nHe has led Wellness Workshops on the techniques of relaxation\, meditation and stress reduction through music. He contributed to the CD ‘Synchronicity’\, the documentary film ‘Macho’ and the CD ‘Bodhisattva Mass Transit’. He performed at the WKCR Columbia University Radio Station as part of the live 24-hour Raga Festival. He has also performed for charitable causes such as World Aids Day and the World Hunger Project. Dr. Rao has a PhD in Computer Science and is a Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University\, New Jersey. \nDr. Maitreya Padukone was inspired and initiated into the art of Tabla (Indian Drums) by Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. He plays tabla in Salsa Masala\, an award winning Indo-Latin fusion band. Maitreya has accompanied well known musicians like Steve Gorn\, Ustad Sultan Khan\, Dr.Taranath. DESCRIPTION:Violinists Jake Shulman-Ment and Abigale Reisman are among the most highly regarded klezmer performers of their generation. They are united in their stunning virtuosity\, deep backgrounds in klezmer and Yiddish musical idioms\, fearless sense of exploratory improvisation\, and dedication to helping uncover and revive previously unknown folk repertoire. Prepare to be led on a virtuosic and energetic journey through raucous dance tunes\, meditative listening music\, original compositions\, and new settings of Yiddish poetry. \nOn the day following this special appearance\, they will be heading into the studio to record a collaborative album. They are joined by klezmer legends Kurt Bjorling (clarinet) and Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl)\, and rising cello star Raffi Boden (cello). \nAbout the Musicians\nBorn in New York City\, violinist Jake Shulman-Ment is “considered one of the finest klezmer fiddlers on the planet” (Jon Kalish\, NPR). He tours and records internationally as a soloist and with Midwood\, Daniel Kahn\, Frank London\, Di Naye Kapelye\, Joey Weisenberg\, and Duncan Sheik. He was featured in Csaba Bereczki’s full-length documentary film Soul Exodus\, and performed on screen in HBO’s Succession and Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman. A widely sought-out teacher of the klezmer fiddle tradition\, Jake has been a faculty member of KlezKamp\, KlezKanada\, Klezmer Paris\, the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival\, Yiddish Summer Weimar\, Fiddle Tunes\, Yiddish New York\, and other festivals throughout the globe. He collected\, studied\, performed\, and documented traditional music in Romania as a Fulbright scholar\, and has lived and traveled in Hungary and Greece\, learning traditional violin styles. In 2018 he received the prestigious NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship in Folk/Traditional Arts. Jake’s debut solo album\, A Redele (A Wheel) (Oriente Musik\, 2012) was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award. His new group\, Midwood\, released its first album\, Out of the Narrows\, (Chant Records) in May 2018. She is particularly interested in creating a vocal sound through the violin and connecting her playing to the rhythms and accents of the Yiddish language. Abigale is a performer\, composer\, and arranger with the International Jewish Music Festival award winning band\, Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band. She regularly performs in a duo with renowned klezmer scholar and performer Hankus Netsky. Abigale has been a faculty member of Yiddish Summer Weimar\, Yiddish New York\, and Klezkanada. In addition to playing klezmer music\, Abigale is also a co-founder of Thread Ensemble\, an experimental trio that creates music out of interactions with their audiences and a member of Tredici Bacci\, which was featured in Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need to Know: November 2016”. Time Out NY noted him as being a “gifted and highly expressive pianist.” Performing regularly across North America and Europe\, he also makes frequent appearances in India\, where the nationally distributed newspaper The Hindu wrote\, “Raj Bhimani is a very sensitive piano player\, with a predilection for lyrical melody accompanied with rhythmic gracefulness.” In New York\, where he resides\, he appears often at The Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as well as at other venues. \nMr. Bhimani is a champion of new music and has developed a particular expertise in French piano literature. During his time studying in Paris he had the opportunity to meet composer Henri Dutilleux\, who declared him “a great artist who plays with sensitivity and intelligence.” In 2016\, to mark what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday\, Mr. Bhimani gave several performances of his works\, including the Preludes\, which Mr. Bhimani learned from handwritten manuscripts given to him by the composer before these works were published. \nAnother prominent French composer\, Thérèse Brenet\, has written several works especially for Mr. Bhimani. Two of Ms. Brenet’s compositions for Mr. Bhimani can be heard on a CD entitled “To the West Wind\,” on the Delatour label. A disc containing Schubert’s B-flat Sonata and Moments Musicaux was issued by Delatour in the same year. Two more works Ms. Brenet wrote for Mr. Bhimani were issued in 2014 on a disc entitled “Le Visionnaire\,” released by Musik Fabrik\, which has also released recordings of late solo works by Brahms as well as another disk dedicated to solo works by Ravel. All these recordings are available worldwide on numerous platforms. A recording dedicated to late sonatas of Schubert is in preparation\, and Mr. Bhimani is honored to be the first pianist invited to record previously-unpublished works by composer Germaine Tailleferre. This will be a multi-disk project. \nIn addition to solo recitals\, Mr. Bhimani also performs with Syrinx : XXII\, a group formed with musicians from Portugal. The trio performs regularly in the US\, Portugal\, and India\, and has premiered works written especially for them by composers in Portugal and Germany. \nFrequently sought after as a teacher and pedagogue\, Mr. Bhimani is known for guiding students from their first encounters with a piano up to concert level performances. His students have earned numerous prizes and have been heard in performance at Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center\, and other esteemed venues in New York and across the United States. He writes articles on teaching and performance for Serenade Magazine\, is a frequent judge and lecturer on piano pedagogy\, and has served on the board of The Leschetizky Association\, an organization committed to upholding the great pedagogue’s ideals of beautiful tone production and musical integrity. In the context of this concert by The New York Virtuoso Singers\, entitled Composers Without Borders – The Ties That Bind Us\, we focus on the unity of humankind\, not individual governments\, whether open and honest or repressive and evil. There are countless common threads present in people from all over the globe. The desire and ability to express oneself through music is one which cannot be suppressed by leaders of countries. Music unifies and uplifts all people. DESCRIPTION:This concert tells the story of three very closely linked composers. Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck were married and had seven children together. Robert was mentor to Johannes Brahms and a very close friendship of many years ensued between Johannes and Clara. Some believe that he was in love with her\, but whether or not this was the case\, their respect\, admiration\, and love for one another was made evident through countless letters and his loyalty and care for her through Robert’s illness and eventual death. Both Robert and Johannes dedicated piano works to Clara\, and Clara did the same for Johannes. These can be seen as love letters in musical form. \nDoors open at 5:45. The concert will be hosted by Harvey Fierstein\, with a special appearance by David Byrne\, and will include special performances by Mourning [A] BLKstar\, Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and Suzanne Vega. Holley will also collaborate with American fashion designer Emily Adams Bode Aujla\, founder of Bode\, on creating a custom outfit for the show. \nWe are thrilled to celebrate Holley’s newest album\, Oh Me\, Oh My\, features Bon Iver\, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe\, and Sharon Van Etten\, among others.
