DESCRIPTION:Join the The Park Slope Woodwind Quintet at the New York Society for Ethical Culture for its first concert as a dedicated contemporary music ensemble! \nThe program features works by NYC-based composers Manuel Ciordia and Yoshi Weinberg\, as well as US-based composers Jane Kozhevnikova\, Gary Nash\, and Nathan Bueno de Mesquita. \nInitially established for a 2021 outdoor concert series outside a stoop in Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, as live performances began to emerge amid the COVID-19 pandemic\, The Park Slope Woodwind Quintet (PSWQ) has since become a consummate interpreter of standard repertoire equally at home on the street or in lauded venues across New York City’s boroughs. Time Out NY noted him as being a “gifted and highly expressive pianist.” Performing regularly across North America and Europe\, he also makes frequent appearances in India\, where the nationally distributed newspaper The Hindu wrote\, “Raj Bhimani is a very sensitive piano player\, with a predilection for lyrical melody accompanied with rhythmic gracefulness.” In New York\, where he resides\, he appears often at The Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as well as at other venues. \nMr. Bhimani is a champion of new music and has developed a particular expertise in French piano literature. During his time studying in Paris he had the opportunity to meet composer Henri Dutilleux\, who declared him “a great artist who plays with sensitivity and intelligence.” In 2016\, to mark what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday\, Mr. Bhimani gave several performances of his works\, including the Preludes\, which Mr. Bhimani learned from handwritten manuscripts given to him by the composer before these works were published. \nAnother prominent French composer\, Thérèse Brenet\, has written several works especially for Mr. Bhimani. Two of Ms. Brenet’s compositions for Mr. Bhimani can be heard on a CD entitled “To the West Wind\,” on the Delatour label. A disc containing Schubert’s B-flat Sonata and Moments Musicaux was issued by Delatour in the same year. Two more works Ms. Brenet wrote for Mr. Bhimani were issued in 2014 on a disc entitled “Le Visionnaire\,” released by Musik Fabrik\, which has also released recordings of late solo works by Brahms as well as another disk dedicated to solo works by Ravel. All these recordings are available worldwide on numerous platforms. A recording dedicated to late sonatas of Schubert is in preparation\, and Mr. Bhimani is honored to be the first pianist invited to record previously-unpublished works by composer Germaine Tailleferre. This will be a multi-disk project. \nIn addition to solo recitals\, Mr. Bhimani also performs with Syrinx : XXII\, a group formed with musicians from Portugal. The trio performs regularly in the US\, Portugal\, and India\, and has premiered works written especially for them by composers in Portugal and Germany. \nFrequently sought after as a teacher and pedagogue\, Mr. Bhimani is known for guiding students from their first encounters with a piano up to concert level performances. His students have earned numerous prizes and have been heard in performance at Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center\, and other esteemed venues in New York and across the United States. He writes articles on teaching and performance for Serenade Magazine\, is a frequent judge and lecturer on piano pedagogy\, and has served on the board of The Leschetizky Association\, an organization committed to upholding the great pedagogue’s ideals of beautiful tone production and musical integrity. In the context of this concert by The New York Virtuoso Singers\, entitled Composers Without Borders – The Ties That Bind Us\, we focus on the unity of humankind\, not individual governments\, whether open and honest or repressive and evil. There are countless common threads present in people from all over the globe. The desire and ability to express oneself through music is one which cannot be suppressed by leaders of countries. Music unifies and uplifts all people. Our concert highlights the unending compositional creativity of humankind despite the complicated interrelationships of the countries represented. \nFrom Iryna Aleksiychuk\, composer of Gloria Patri: Music is a language that is understood by all people of the world. Robert was mentor to Johannes Brahms and a very close friendship of many years ensued between Johannes and Clara. Some believe that he was in love with her\, but whether or not this was the case\, their respect\, admiration\, and love for one another was made evident through countless letters and his loyalty and care for her through Robert’s illness and eventual death. Both Robert and Johannes dedicated piano works to Clara\, and Clara did the same for Johannes. These can be seen as love letters in musical form. \nDoors open at 5:45. DESCRIPTION:The American Folk Art Museum (AFAM) is thrilled to celebrate multi-faceted Lonnie Holley at a special fundraising concert: “Lonnie Holley and His Universe.” Holley is a powerful visual artist represented in AFAM’s collection\, as well as an internationally renowned musician. The concert will be hosted by Harvey Fierstein\, with a special appearance by David Byrne\, and will include special performances by Mourning [A] BLKstar\, Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and Suzanne Vega. Holley will also collaborate with American fashion designer Emily Adams Bode Aujla\, founder of Bode\, on creating a custom outfit for the show. \nWe are thrilled to celebrate Holley’s newest album\, Oh Me\, Oh My\, features Bon Iver\, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe\, and Sharon Van Etten\, among others. The evening will celebrate Holley’s visual and musical talents and explore his collaborative spirit with other musicians\, which has led to more than six full-length albums. \nAFAM is the leading institution for folk art across time and place\, showcasing artists and artworks that followed non-traditional paths and were previously overlooked by the mainstream artworld. Nelson Ojeda Valdés’s 2021-22 season includes participation in a complete performance of Olivier Messiaen’s Catalogue d’oiseaux presented by Piano Spheres (Los Angeles)\, a chamber recital at the Steinway Society of Puerto Rico (San Juan)\, a performance of Paul Jared Newman’s “Por la noche me llaman” at Ballet Hispanico (NYC)\, the premiere of Janet Emmons’s “Requiem for Gaia’s Children” at the New York Society for Ethical Culture (NYSEC)\, participation in Dr. Lisa Yui’s series “Lives of the Piano” at Manhattan School of Music\, performances of “Women of Romanticism” featuring the music of Clara Wieck Schumann\, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel\, Josephine Lang\, and Ethel Smyth at Pregones (Bronx)\, Redeemer Concert Series (Astoria)\, St. Boniface (Brooklyn) and NYSEC\, and Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto on tour with the Puerto Rico Summer Festival Orchestra.  Ojeda Valdés holds degrees from California State University Fullerton and Manhattan School of Music. For more information please visit nelsonojeda.com \nSoprano Stefanie Izzo has been hailed as possessing a “gorgeously rich and full sound” for her work in opera and musical theatre. Her recent performance of Maria in West Side Story with St. Petersburg Opera was deemed “ideal in every way\,” and garnered a Theatre Tampa Bay Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical.  Stefanie made her off-Broadway debut in 2012 as Monica in Menotti’s The Medium\, and her  international debut in 2011 as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore with Musica Viva Hong Kong. She was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the National Italian American Foundation’s Andrea Bocelli Music Scholarship\, and holds a B.M. from NYU and an M.A. and Advanced Performance Certificate from CUNY Queens College. In addition to operatic repertoire\, Stefanie devotes a significant amount of her time to art song\, particularly that of female composers\, and maintains an active concert schedule in the NYC area.  She is a co-founder of the chamber ensemble The Astoria Music Project. www.stefanieizzo.com \nPianist Christopher Bradshaw has performed solo and chamber music in the USA\, Spain\, Germany\, Austria and Switzerland. He teaches piano in New York City\, and frequently performs as a soloist and in collaboration with other instrumentalists\, singers and choirs. He is music director at Church of the Redeemer in Astoria\, Queens\, and is artistic director of the Redeemer Concert Series. www.bradshawpiano.com \nCellist Kate Dillingham is a soloist\, recording artist and an avid proponent of the music of living composers. She has performed as a soloist with The St. Petersburg Philharmonic\, The Moscow Symphony Orchestra\, The Salzburg Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and The Brno Philharmonic (Czech Republic). She has appeared at Carnegie Hall\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Lincoln Center in New York City. Kate was a student of Bernard Greenhouse at Rutgers University and of Maria Tchaikovskaya at the Moscow Conservatory. A long association with Mr. Greenhouse led to collaboration on an edition of the Sonatas for Violoncello and Keyboard\, BWV 1027-1029 by J.S. Bach\, published by G. Schirmer Inc.\, which she presented in a combined concert and lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and recorded with renowned harpsichordist Jory Vinikour for Affetto Records. Kate has produced and recorded albums of varied repertoire from Haydn to Higdon which are available at iTunes\, Amazon\, and Spotify. Kate is the Executive Director of ArtsAhimsa: Music for Peace\, and Founder of MyBlueSkies.net\, an online platform for teaching and streaming in high resolution audio. Kate also serves as President of the Violoncello Society of New York (VCS).
