Leading up to the trip\, students spend eight weeks studying the rise of Nazi Germany and the Shoah. Upon arrival in Poland\, the group spends a day at the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex. Thereafter\, the group dedicates one week to restoring a cemetery in a once-vibrant Jewish community. College students join with community partners to engage in seven days of service\, reflection\, and restoration. Tonight’s presentation will focus on Project Preservation’s work in Sanok\, Poland\, in 2010. \nAbout Steven Glazer\nSteven Glazer is an English teacher at Crossroads Academy in Lyme\, New Hampshire. He oversaw the collection and processing of NYC’s paper\, metal\, glass\, plastic\, textile waste\, electronic waste\, organics\, and hazardous waste as well as public policy. In 2013\, NRDC by and Earth Day New York named Ron as the Public Official of the Year in New York City. \nDuring his career\, Ron has been recognized with a number of business and environmental awards including recognition as a ‘Champion of the Earth’ by the United Nations Environment Program which is the highest distinction for environmental protection given by the United Nations and recognizes outstanding visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy\, science and entrepreneurship and the Medal of Excellence from Columbia University which recognizes alumnus under the age of 45 for excellence in scholarship\, public service and professional life  \nRon received his MBA from Columbia Business School. She is currently an Associate Professor of Environmental Health at MDI Biological Laboratory. In addition\, she directs the activities of the Community Environmental Health Laboratory. She is the co-developer of the citizen science online data portal\, Anecdata.org. \nSince 2000\, she has worked with multiple community partners\, identifying\, and helping to remedy threats to public health and the clean waters on and around Mount Desert Island\, including bacterial pollution at local swim beaches and red tide blooms in Frenchman Bay. This month’s topic: Intimate Partner Violence Related Traumatic Brain Injury: \nThe Valera Lab uses MRI in conjunction with measures of cognitive functioning to assess the effects of physical abuse resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI) in women sustaining intimate partner-violence (IPV). In our current work\, we are using a range of methodologies including neuroimaging\, neuropsychological assessment\, and interviews to characterize women’s partner-related TBI history and its relationship to neural\, cognitive\, and psychological functioning. \nDr. Eve M. Valera is currently Director of the Valera Lab\, an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School\, and a Research Scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital. She has been working in the field of domestic violence for over 25 years. Her current work uses a range of methodologies to understand the neural\, neuropsychological and psychological consequences of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) resulting from intimate partner-violence (IPV). Looking at two prominent examples\, RNA interference and genome editing\, we can extract some common themes and key lessons applicable to future discoveries. \nAbout Our Speaker \nDavid Bumcrot\, PhD\, is Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of Research at CAMP4 Therapeutics\, where he oversees the Biology\, Data Science and Discovery teams. \nPrior to joining CAMP4\, Dr. Bumcrot led groups at innovative biotech companies advancing novel technologies towards clinical development. He was one of the first employees at Alnylam pharmaceuticals where he spent ten years working to make RNA interference-based drugs a reality for multiple indications\, including key contributions to a first-in-class systemically administered siRNA therapeutic tested in an oncology clinical trial. Dr. Bumcrot then moved on to Editas Medicine where his team established the company’s initial therapeutic programs utilizing groundbreaking CRISPR technology. \nDr. Bumcrot received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on the development of novel therapies for patients with B cell lymphoma\, including indolent lymphomas (follicular\, marginal zone\, small lymphocytic)\, Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia\, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia\, as well as aggressive lymphoma\, such as diffuse large-B cell lymphoma. \nDr. Palomba’s research interest is in tumor immunology\, and she is involved in the development of novel therapies that exploit the immune system as a way to treat cancer. She is the head of hematological malignancies for the Cellular Therapeutics Center\, which has played a fundamental role in the development and implementation of CAR T cell therapy. Specifically\, she addresses the financial impact of cancer and resultant disparities in treatment adherence and health/mental health services use\, and her work focuses on adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors. Her dissertation research assessed substance use disparities in sexual and gender minority youth. Dr. Thom received her BA from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and earned her MSW and PhD from the Columbia School of Social Work. \nStacie Corcoran\, RN\, MS\, AOCNS\, is the Nurse Leader for the Survivorship Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)\, where she manages multiple nurse practitioner-led clinics throughout the institution. She has presented nationally on survivorship models of care and long-term and late effects associated with cancer treatment. A graduate of William Paterson University and Columbia University\, Corcoran has spent her entire career in oncology nursing.
