SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Jean Rohe: Singing Together Toward a More Perfect Union
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nAward-winning songwriter and performer Jean Rohe tells the story of her song “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” —its origins and the journeys it has taken since she penned it in 2010. Performed many hundreds of times by fellow artists\, choirs\, and music-makers around the campfire\, the song’s roots reach deep into the fertile soil of movement music that came before her\, and the tradition of group singing that has fortified so many who have struggled for justice in dark times.  \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\n>>> RSVP on Zoom\nAbout Jean Rohe\nJean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs\, concerned as much with the interior lives of her narrators as with the wider world around them. Her incisive\, literary style is the product of years of experimentation and practice\, learning on her feet as a side-person and bandleader in New York’s wide-ranging music communities. Born into a family of living room music-makers\, storytellers\, and raconteurs\, Jean’s approach to her craft assumes that music is a community act\, woven into the social life of family and friends. She has won over folkies\, jazz heads\, theater geeks\, bookworms\, and would-be noise complainants to her singular take on the human condition. No Depression says\, “Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful\, reflective\, and courageous.” Visit her website\, jeanrohe.com\, and follow her on Instagram @jeanrohe \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Annual Thanksgiving Giveaway \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Michael H. Posner: 'Election 2026: The Role of Business Leaders in Protecting Our Democracy'
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nNOTICE: This program will be held in the ECFS gymnasium. Please enter the Society’s western/ramp entrance on West 64th Street and follow our ushers and signs to find the room. \nUS-based businesses have been the greatest beneficiaries of the post-World War II international order\, rooted in human rights and the rule of law. While many of these core democratic safeguards are being challenged\, business leaders have been reluctant to stand up. As the November mid-term elections loom on the horizon\, Professor Posner will discuss the risks to fair elections and what business leaders can and should be doing to support our democracy. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nCan’t join us in-person? RSVP to watch on Zoom here. \nAbout Michael H. Posner\nMichael Posner is the Director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights\, the first human rights center at a business school. He also is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance. From September 2009 until March 2013\, he served in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy\, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. State Department. Before going into government\, he was the Executive Director and then President of Human Rights First\, a U.S.-based human rights advocacy organization. He is the author of Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. Join us for a conversation with four members of our Youth Climate Corps as they reflect on what they have learned through hands-on work in environmental restoration\, civic engagement\, and community leadership. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: Why America's Best Ideas Lead to Our Worst Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Notice: Today’s talk by Leader Curt Collier has been postponed. Instead\, we’ll hold a discussion led by Society Trustee Dr. Carolyn Parker. Due to technical limitations preventing remote participation\, this will be in-person only\, with no Zoom livestream. \nCome early for free bagels and coffee! \n*** \nFew ideas have shaped the American experiment more deeply than individualism\, self-reliance\, and the ideal of freedom from government interference. These values helped expand religious liberty\, free speech\, innovation\, and the protection of individual rights\, creating extraordinary opportunities for human flourishing. Yet the same traditions can also foster isolation\, unchecked inequality\, exploitation\, and even open the door to authoritarian movements that promise order amid social fragmentation. \nThis talk explores the double-edged legacy of American freedom and asks a timely question: How do we preserve the liberties that have strengthened our democracy while cultivating the responsibilities and institutions that allow a free society to endure? \nCommunity lunch returns in September. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: How to be Gay (Even if You're Not a Homosexual)
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nAt a time when many people still struggle to live openly and authentically\, “How to Be Gay: Even If You Are Not a Homosexual” explores a deeper and more universal question: what can all of us learn from those who have had to fight simply for the right to exist as themselves? \nDrawing from the writings\, reflections\, and lived experiences of gay thinkers\, activists\, and ordinary people\, this talk examines how the struggle for self-acceptance often produces profound insights into courage\, identity\, dignity\, community\, and freedom. More than a talk about sexuality\, this is a conversation about becoming fully human — about resisting shame\, rejecting conformity\, standing up for the humanity of others\, and discovering what becomes possible when people refuse to hide who they are. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nRSVP to Join on Zoom \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Daniel Wortel-London: 'The Beloved Economy: Ethical Economic Thought and the Rebuilding of Community'
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nWhat is the economy? At its most basic\, it’s how we meet our material needs. But some of these methods have come at a profound cost—fracturing communities\, degrading environments\, and concentrating wealth at the expense of shared flourishing. Drawing on historical and contemporary research\, this talk explores a different tradition: ethical economic thinking that centers community\, care\, and democratic participation. What would it mean to build an economy we actually love—one that serves people and places\, not just growth? \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nRSVP to Join on Zoom \nAbout Daniel Wortel-London\nDaniel Wortel-London\, Ph.D. is a historian\, policy researcher\, and Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Bard College. His book\, The Menace of Prosperity: New York City and the Struggle for Economic Development\, 1865–1981 (University of Chicago Press\, 2025)\, examines the political economy of urban development. He has worked as a policy specialist with the Center for the Advancement of a Steady State Economy and the Wellbeing Economy Alliance\, and his writing has appeared in The Nation\, Jacobin\, the Washington Post\, and Dissent. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: How To Love a Country That Disappoints Us
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nAt a moment when many Americans feel exhausted by politics\, disillusioned by the failures of our institutions\, and alarmed by President Trump’s ongoing attacks on democratic norms and civic unity\, this Memorial Day reflection asks a deeper question: what does patriotism mean when democracy itself feels wounded? As the Supreme Court retreats from long-standing democratic safeguards and public life grows increasingly cynical and divided\, many citizens struggle not simply with politics\, but with grief for the country itself. \nThis talk explores how we can remain faithful to the unfinished democratic experiment — not through blind nationalism or partisan outrage\, but through the difficult ethical work of citizenship\, civic courage\, and repairing what is broken rather than surrendering it to fear\, apathy\, or authoritarianism. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Kate Cohen: The Pope\, the President\, and the Problem of Moral Authority
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nWouldn’t it be nice if we had a moral authority to whom we could appeal when we weren’t sure whether something was right or wrong? Or to back us up when we were? In these catastrophic/ridiculous times\, you don’t have to be Catholic to take satisfaction in the Pope’s recent public support of simple decency. But even when the Pope says something self-evidently right\, we have to remind ourselves that morality doesn’t inhere in any one person or text. And that\, perhaps\, our collective desire for such an external authority has helped create the mess we’re in. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nRSVP\n>>RSVP to Join Online via Zoom \n>>RSVP to Join In-Person on Eventbrite \nAbout Kate Cohen\nKate Cohen is a former Washington Post contributing columnist and the author of We of Little Faith: Why I Stopped Pretending to Believe (And Maybe You Should Too)\, which chronicles her journey to outspoken atheism and examines whether nonbelievers can still have the benefits religion promises. For this work and for her columns inspecting American deference to religion\, the Freedom from Religion Foundation honored her with its 2023 “Freethought Heroine” award. She now writes an independent column called Scratch\, about creating — instead of buying or simply accepting — the stuff\, nature\, and purpose of our lives. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: Who Owns the Moral Life in a Democracy?
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nWe are often blindsided when our government acts unethically\, yet we continue to expect it to serve as our moral compass. While influential think tanks like the Heritage Foundation argue that the state must reclaim the “moral center\,” Jean-Jacques Rousseau proposed the exact opposite: true moral authority resides solely with the people. If Rousseau is right\, have average Americans lost their grip on the nation’s conscience? Join us as we explore whether we still hold the levers of morality—and how we might take them back. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nRSVP\n>>>RSVP to join Online \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.
