SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Tinia R. Merriweather: Why Teaching Ethics Matters Now More Than Ever
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nIn times like these\, we need Ethics. With traumatic headlines filling our social media newsfeeds\, scrolling the bottom of our tv screens\, buzzing our phones\, and crowding our already overwhelmed minds\, it can be challenging to remain hopeful about the future. Yet\, the study and practice of Ethics can ground us in principles that we can apply to imagine and build the world where everyone’s humanity is respected and protected. In the Ethics classroom\, we can lean into respectful discourse and multiple perspectives\, which will help us to co-create a better\, safer\, more equitable\, and more just world for all. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nRSVP to Join on Zoom \nAbout Tinia R. Her focus is at the nexus of psychology and education – connected to the intersection of race\, gender\, and other identities and their interplay in the classroom and other contexts. Tinia teaches in the Ethics Department at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School and at NYU Steinhardt. With 30 years of experience\, she has taught at all levels from elementary through graduate school. Tinia aims for scholar-activism in achieving equity and justice in institutions and society. Her goal is to lead with love and toward liberation\, with a focus on Black joy. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.
