The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant. \nAbout Playwright Susan Charlotte\nSusan’s multi-faceted career started with Prism Blues. Based on her work as a prison counselor\, the play earned her a place in Columbia’s MFA program and won the prestigious Joseph Kesselring Award. Her 60 full-length & one-act plays have been produced throughout the country. They include: The Shoemaker starring Danny Aiello\, directed by Antony Marsellis; She’s Of A Certain Age; The Round Table (w/ Oscar & Tony winner Peter Stone)\, and When Truth Is Not Enough. Her play\, Love Divided By\, was produced by the Actors Studio and was made into a film with an original score by Philip Glass. The film reopened MoMA’s Titus II theatre. Her other films include: Something Like That\, A Broken Sole\, Come On (Hamptons Film Festival.) Her TV credits include; Did You Know My Husband? with Louise Lasser & Carole Shelley (PBS); The Comedy Zone with Patty Duke & Paul Reiser (CBS); Guiding Light and Loving (CBS). \nSusan authored the acclaimed books Creativity and Creativity In Film and has written for NY Magazine and Playbill. She was also a professor at Columbia U.\, NYU\, and City College. She is the founding artistic director of Food For Thought Productions and Cause Celebre.

SUMMARY:From Landfill Harmonic to Basura: A Musical Journey to Broadway
DESCRIPTION:Join dramaturg Ken Cerniglia for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the new Broadway-bound musical Basura\, inspired by the true story of the Orchestra of Recycled Instruments of Cateura. \n>>> FREE – RSVP Here\nThe afternoon will kick off with a screening of Landfill Harmonic\, a 2015 documentary film directed by Brad Allgood and Graham Townsley\, about Paraguayan music teacher Favio Chavez and his children’s orchestra in Paraguay that performs with materials recycled from a landfill near Asunción. According to The Huffington Post\, “[t]he film is both an exposé on the harsh conditions of slum life and a commentary on the global threats of consumption and waste.” \nShortly after the film’s premiere\, Broadway producer Michael Shulman optioned Landfill Harmonic as the basis for a new Broadway musical\, which would ultimately feature music and lyrics by internationally acclaimed Latin recording artist Gloria Estefan and her daughter Emily Estefan; a book by one of America’s most produced living playwrights\, Karen Zacarías; and direction by 5-time Tony Award-nominee Michael Greif (Rent\, Dear Evan Hansen\, Next to Normal). \nAs the show’s dramaturg (a theatrical editor for new works)\, Ken’s creative journey began in April 2022 with a research trip to Asuncion\, Paraguay\, where he and Karen attended classes and rehearsals at the Orchestra’s new music school\, interviewed musicians and family members\, and experienced a week in the life of Cateura\, a poor community in the shadow of South America’s second-largest landfill. Since then\, Ken has worked closely with the musical’s creators through countless drafts\, several developmental readings and workshops\, ongoing cultural consultations\, and two months of rehearsals and performances of its first production. \nWith its provocative new title (Spanish for “garbage”) Basura’s mission is to deliver a thrilling live musical storytelling experience that welcomes diverse\, multigenerational\, English-speaking audiences in the United States\, while joyfully representing Paraguay and honoring the truth of the Orchestra’s story. Basura made its world premiere in Atlanta on June 12\, 2026\, and became the Alliance Theatre’s most recommended and best-selling new musical in history. \n \nAbout Ken Cerniglia\nKen Cerniglia is a veteran dramaturg\, writer\, and organizational leader whose dramaturgy is currently represented on Broadway in Hadestown and Aladdin. During 16 years as dramaturg and literary manager at Disney Theatrical\, he developed over 70 titles for Broadway\, touring\, international\, and licensed productions\, including Peter and the Starcatcher\, The Hunchback of Notre Dame\, Freaky Friday\, Newsies\, The Little Mermaid\, High School Musical\, and Tarzan. He adapted several Disney librettos for young performers and developed a new series of Marvel plays for teens.
