SUMMARY:Cause Célèbre Productions Presents: Someone is Sending a Message
DESCRIPTION:Join Ethical NYC and Cause Celebre Productions for an unforgettable play with Broadway actors and Tony Award-winners including Roberta Wallach\, Penny Fuller\, and James Naughton! \nWritten by Susan Charlotte • Directed by Antony Marsellis \nSomeone is Sending a Message is based on a true story of persistence and hope in the face of adversity–a story that revolves around a courageous young man named Nick Springer. It’s also the story of a painter named Sheila\, a friend of Nick who is at a crossroads in her art and in her life. \nSuddenly she receives a phone call: What do you mean Nick is dead? \nThe same Nick she spoke with two weeks ago\, who she had known since he was 13. The same Nick who had contracted Meningitis at camp and\, despite quadruple amputations\, became a Paralympic Gold Medalist\, an international advocate for life\, survival\, vaccination\, and a national hero. Nick never let any obstacle get in his way\, but while swimming in a friend’s pool his heart gave out. \nSheila turns to Facebook to learn more about what happened\, where hundreds of people have shared messages. Strangely\, every time she tries to post her own\, words appear on her screen: \nSomeone is sending a message. \nSo begins Sheila’s surrealistic journey\, so affected by Nick’s extraordinary life and unexpected death that she begins to face the obstacles in her own life\, make sense of its twists and turns\, and come to terms with the death of her brother\, who was also in his 30s. Sheila stares at the screen as feelings from her past appear alongside the messages from Nick’s friends\, the two worlds overlapping. Perhaps there is a message for her. \nSuddenly one appears: \nLife goes on. With or without you. You can either shut down or join in. \nIt’s from Nick! Sheila turns and faces her incomplete canvas\, and is able\, at last\, to add the final brushstrokes. \nTickets\n$25 – Click to Purchase on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Ethics and the Theater: Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:Free! \nDon’t miss our Ethics and the Theater team’s annual Summer Sunday Platform featuring a staged reading of A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-finalist Love Letters: \nAndrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner\, both born to wealth and position\, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached\, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school\, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” \nWhile Andy is off at war Melissa marries\, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries\, becomes a successful attorney\, gets involved in politics and\, eventually\, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile\, her marriage in tatters\, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos\, drinks more than she should\, and becomes estranged from her children. \nEventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair\, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter\, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death\, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant\, and gave to\, each other over the years—physically apart\, perhaps\, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. \nMonthly Collection\nProject Renewal \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with C.K. Allen: Letter From a Birmingham Jail
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nJoin us for a special Sunday Platform presented by our Ethics and the Theater team. This week we’ll feature a dramatic reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail by actor C.K. Allen\, directed by Tai Thompson. \nIn this open letter written on April 16\, 1963\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. argues that people have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws and to take direct action rather than waiting potentially forever for justice to come through the courts. King writes: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” King’s imprisonment was during The Birmingham campaign which included coordinated marches and sit-ins against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham\, Alabama. The nonviolent campaign was coordinated by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) and King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). It began on April 3. On April 10\, Circuit Judge W. A. Jenkins Jr. issued a blanket injunction against “parading\, demonstrating\, boycotting\, trespassing\, and picketing.” Leaders of the campaign announced they would disobey the ruling. On April 12\, King was arrested with SCLC activist Ralph Abernathy\, ACMHR\, and SCLC official Fred Shuttlesworth. The letter\, widely published\, became an important text for the American Civil Rights Movement. It’s time to listen to King’s words once more. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout C.K. SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater Encore: Satchmo at The Waldorf by Terry Teachout
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and talkback series continues on October 20 and October 22 with two performances of Terry Teachout’s Satchmo at The Waldorf: \nSATCHMO AT THE WALDORF is a one-man\, three-character play in which the same actor portrays Louis Armstrong\, the greatest of all jazz trumpeters; Joe Glaser\, his white manager; and Miles Davis\, who admired Armstrong’s playing but disliked his onstage manner. It takes place in 1971 in a dressing room backstage at the Empire Room of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel\, where Armstrong performed in public for the last time four months before his death. Reminiscing into a tape recorder about his life and work\, Armstrong seeks to come to terms with his longstanding relationship with Glaser\, whom he once loved like a father but now believes to have betrayed him. In alternating scenes\, Glaser defends his controversial decision to promote Armstrong’s career (with the help of the Chicago mob) by encouraging him to simplify his musical style\, while Davis attacks Armstrong for pandering to white audiences. \nAfter the performance\, we’ll host a lively discussion of the ethical issues raised by the play. \nPerformed by C.K. Allen • Narrated by Bonnie Bean • Directed by Tai Thompson • Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner \nSuggested Donation: Members $10; Non-Members $15 \nPurchase tickets on Eventbrite here! \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required to attend. SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater Presents: HEISENBERG by Simon Stephens
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and talkback series continues on September 29 and October 1 with two performances of Simon Stephens’s Heisenberg: \nIn a crowded London train station\, Georgie spots Alex\, a man much older than her\, and plants a kiss on his neck. Gerber Directed by Tom Herman \nSuggested Donation: Members $10; Non-Members $15 \nPurchase tickets on Eventbrite here! \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required to attend. SUMMARY:Ethical Theater: Narrative Medicine Short Plays with Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE special theatrical presentation by students from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University! \nTwelve first-year medical students will be presenting 10-minute plays they developed in their Narrative Medicine elective course taught by narrative medicine faculty playwright Catherine Rogers\, MFA\, MS and guest lecturer theatre director Avra Sidiropoulou\, PhD. \nIn this class\, students explore ethics and empathy through the eyes of the characters they create. For students\, creating characters for their plays helps them step into the shoes of others\, as they will be expected to step into the shoes of their future patients. They also learn the skills of teamwork while responding to and acting in each other’s plays. \nRSVPs kindly requested. Click here to register on Eventbrite! \nFor more information about our own monthly Ethics and the Theater series of staged readings and talkbacks\, please visit our calendar.
