SUMMARY:Young Ethical Explorers: "Hi-Story" Social Justice Festival
DESCRIPTION:Come one\, come all! Songs\, Crafts\, Speeches\, and our own Peace March celebrate real-life helpers and deeds that have contributed to balance\, equality\, and fairness in our world. \nThis festival commemorates Claudette Colvin Day. On March 3\, 1955\, Claudette\, a 15-year-old African American girl\, emboldened by the lessons of black history\, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery\, Alabama. Claudette says\, “I felt like Sojourner Truth was pushing down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman on the other.” \nClaudette was asked by Rosa Parks\, leader of the NAACP youth group\, to present her story to other young people to inspire them toward activism. In December of that year\, Rosa Parks herself refused to stand up on that same Montgomery bus line and for that is credited with spawning the Civil Rights Movement. \nWhile Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was called in to lead the bus boycott that ensued\, young lawyer Fred Gray brought the issue of segregation on Montgomery’s buses to the Supreme Court with the testimonies of four African American women. The home-run hitter of the case\, Browder vs. Gayle\, at the Supreme Court was Claudette Colvin\, leading to the victory\, in November of 1956\, of racial integration on public transportation in Alabama. \nThis month’s theme: Mindful March. DESCRIPTION:Amanda will share insights from her book The Fate of Food: What We’ll Eat in a Bigger\, Hotter\, Smarter World\, a five-year adventure into lands\, minds and machines shaping the future of sustainable food. Climate models show that global crop production will decline every decade for the rest of this century due to drought\, heat\, and flooding. Water supplies are in jeopardy. Meanwhile\, the world’s population is expected to grow another 30 percent by midcentury. Little will explore both traditional and high-tech approaches to food production and chart the growth of a movement that could redefine sustainable food on a grand scale. \nAmanda Little is a professor of journalism and science writing at Vanderbilt University. She’s the author of The Fate of Food: What We’ll Eat in a Bigger\, Hotter\, Smarter World\, released June 2019. Little’s first book was Power Trip: The Story of America’s Love Affair with Energy. Little has written about food\, energy\, the environment and technology for publications including the New York Times\, Washington Post\, The New Yorker\, Bloomberg\, Wired\, and Rolling Stone. She has interviewed figures ranging from Barack Obama to Lindsey Graham. \nShared Charity: Fisk University Scholarship Fund \nPresider: Pat Debrovner \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. The theme of their current exhibition is “Impermanence.” The fleeting\, impermanent here and now–in all it’s destruction\, regeneration\, and intense immediacy–is the ultimate reality. The exhibition questions and expands the Buddhist concept of impermanence through artworks by six contemporary artists who explore duration\, survival\, memory\, fate\, history\, loss\, disappearance\, and reappearance. Visitors are called upon to co-produce\, participate\, and intimately experience works of art through time-based and durational installations. \nLunch at Cafe Sera. DESCRIPTION:The skills of emotional intelligence matter for our ability to focus our attention\, make sound decisions\, establish and maintain healthy relationships and physical and mental health. In this interactive talk participants will learn the skills and how they also relate to living an ethical life day to day. \nRobin Stern\, Ph.D.\, is the co-founder and associate director for the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and an associate research scientist at the Child Study Center at Yale. She is a licensed psychoanalyst with 30 years of experience treating individuals\, couples and families. Robin is the co-developer of RULER (an acronym for the five key emotion skills of recognizing\, understanding\, labeling\, expressing\, and regulating emotions) an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that has been adopted by over 1\,500 public\, charter\, and private pre-school to high schools across the United States and in other countries. \nRobin is also a founding member of the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership\, where she spent 15 years creating and facilitating professional development programs for aspiring women leaders. \nRobin is a member of the Emotional Intelligence Consortium for Research in Emotional Intelligence\, is the Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women for Peace Association and serves on the board of Crisis Text Line\, I’ll Go First\, Think Equal and HerWisdom. \nRobin is also on the faculty of Teachers College\, Columbia University and the author of The Gaslight Effect and Project Rebirth. \nShared Charity: TBA \nPresider: Dan Hanson \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Dr. Sandra Steingraber: "The Biologist in Cell Block 3: Science and Civil Disobedience in a Time of Climate Emergency"
DESCRIPTION:The active refusal of a citizen to obey certain laws or commands of a government—civil disobedience—is both a deeply personal act of individual conscience and a powerful political tactic. This lecture examines the history of civil disobedience as a response to social injustice and its current practice as a tool of fossil fuel resistance within the climate justice movement. \nSpeaking both as a PhD ecologist and a civil disobedient\, Sandra Steingraber will argue that civil disobedience can open a cultural and political space for science to speak. Readings from personal essays composed while speaker was incarcerated are interwoven throughout the talk. \nBiologist\, author\, and cancer survivor\, Sandra Steingraber\, Ph.D. writes about climate change\, ecology\, and the links between human health and the environment. Recognized for her ability to serve as a two-way translator between scientists and activists\, Dr. Steingraber has keynoted conferences on human health and the environment throughout the United States and Canada and has been invited to lecture at many medical schools\, hospitals\, and universities–including Harvard\, Yale\, Cornell\, Columbia\, and the Woods Hole Research Center. She has testified in the European Parliament\, at the European Commission\, before the President’s Cancer Panel\, and has participated in briefings to Congress\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, and before United Nations delegates in Geneva\, Switzerland \nShared Charity: Sane Energy Project \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "When the Political Becomes Personal: Despair and Hope in Trying Times"
DESCRIPTION:There is no doubt that the political environment in which we live affects our moods\, our emotions and our well-being. For humanists and progressives these are hard and ominous times\, and the effects on the emotional lives of many individuals is stark and painful. Psychiatric studies have shown that there is a noticeable increase in people suffering from anxiety\, depression\, loneliness and most alarming of all\, is that the suicide rate among all Americans has increased by 33% in the 18 years from 1999 to 2017. Michelle Goldberg\, recently writing in the New York Times\, admitted she is suffering from what she terms “democracy grief.” And she is assuredly not the only one. \nI believe that out times are unique in generating despair about America and its future. But we cannot afford to succumb to despair. Indeed\, we need to regain hope. In my talk of February 9th I plan to look at the unique elements that characterize our political moment and pathways toward belief in a better future. \nShared Charity: Camp Linden \nPresider: Henryka Komanska \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.
