SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: Man Plans and God Laughs
DESCRIPTION:We have all had the experience: Our best laid plans\, large and small\, don’t turn out as we anticipated and hoped. Indeed\, there is a gap built into the human experience wherein our accomplishments fall short of our expectations. Maybe the fault is in ourselves; maybe there is just a heavy measure of serendipity built into the structure of reality. But whatever the cause\, the ubiquity of this experience results in frustration. \nOne response to our our falling short is to lament our failures and perhaps feel crushed. But another is recognize the incongruity between expectations and how things turn out\, appreciate the universality of this state of affairs and then to laugh at the absurdity of the human condition. \nThe title of my address is “Man Plans and God Laughs.” It’s a Yiddish adage\, but similar proverbs are found in many cultures. My address will analyze the realities behind the saying and different responses we can elicit when things don’t go our way. \nShared Charity: Maria Friedman Women’s Shelter \nPresider: Hazel May \nFREE and open to the public. \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion Group - Awaiting Trespass: A Passion by Linda Ty-Casper
DESCRIPTION:Ty-Casper recounts the breaching of the walls around the private lives of an affluent Filipino family responding to the reality of suffering and injustice in their native land — using the surreal as well as the poetic to satirize and criticize contemporary Philippine society. \nThe death of family patriarch Don Severino Gil brings together the entire Gil clan. Through the eyes of Gil’s favorite niece\, Telly\, we see the family struggle to maintain a facade of order and decorum amid the decay of martial law. She experiences a kind of rebirth\, resolving as a writer to struggle against the injustice of her nation. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. \nRead the novella in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nMonthly\, 1st Wednesday\nMembers Free\, Guests $5

SUMMARY:Stoa Nova: Seneca's "On the Firmness of the Wise Man"
DESCRIPTION:On the Firmness of the Wise Man is one of Seneca’s classics on a very peculiar topic in Stoicism: the nature of the wise person\, or sage. Do sages exist? Or are they only idealizations? Can we aspire to becoming sages? If not\, what’s the point of talking about them? (Hint: there is a point…) \nSuggested reading: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/On_the_Firmness_of_the_Wise_Man\n(This is the full text of Seneca’s essay\, definitely helpful to read before coming to the discussion.) \nFREE for members. $5 for non-members. \n\nHosted by philosopher Massimo Pigliucci\, Stoa Nova is inspired (with a bit of immodesty) to the ancient Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Plato\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, Epictetus and many others simply gave lectures about their favorite topics and engaged in Socratic discussions with people interested in what they had to say. In our case\, we will examine the theory and practice of Stoicism as a modern applied philosophy that aids us in navigating a world in some ways just as confusing and uncertain as that of ancient Athens and Rome. SUMMARY:Young Ethical Explorers: "Hi-Story" Social Justice Festival
DESCRIPTION:Come one\, come all! Songs\, Crafts\, Speeches\, and our own Peace March celebrate real-life helpers and deeds that have contributed to balance\, equality\, and fairness in our world. \nThis festival commemorates Claudette Colvin Day. On March 3\, 1955\, Claudette\, a 15-year-old African American girl\, emboldened by the lessons of black history\, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery\, Alabama. Claudette says\, “I felt like Sojourner Truth was pushing down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman on the other.” \nClaudette was asked by Rosa Parks\, leader of the NAACP youth group\, to present her story to other young people to inspire them toward activism. In December of that year\, Rosa Parks herself refused to stand up on that same Montgomery bus line and for that is credited with spawning the Civil Rights Movement. \nWhile Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was called in to lead the bus boycott that ensued\, young lawyer Fred Gray brought the issue of segregation on Montgomery’s buses to the Supreme Court with the testimonies of four African American women. The home-run hitter of the case\, Browder vs. Gayle\, at the Supreme Court was Claudette Colvin\, leading to the victory\, in November of 1956\, of racial integration on public transportation in Alabama. \nThis month’s theme: Mindful March. We will delve into the healing lemniscate linking earth and self. \n\nYoung Ethical Explorers is our Humanist Sunday school\, designed for youngsters from ages 4 to 13\, and takes place concurrent with our Sunday Platform meetings. Sessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, and field trips. \nRSVP is essential to guarantee your place and for planning purposes. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Amanda Little: "The Fate of Food: What We’ll Eat In A Bigger\, Hotter\, Smarter World"
DESCRIPTION:Amanda will share insights from her book The Fate of Food: What We’ll Eat in a Bigger\, Hotter\, Smarter World\, a five-year adventure into lands\, minds and machines shaping the future of sustainable food. Climate models show that global crop production will decline every decade for the rest of this century due to drought\, heat\, and flooding. Water supplies are in jeopardy. Meanwhile\, the world’s population is expected to grow another 30 percent by midcentury. Little will explore both traditional and high-tech approaches to food production and chart the growth of a movement that could redefine sustainable food on a grand scale. \nAmanda Little is a professor of journalism and science writing at Vanderbilt University. She’s the author of The Fate of Food: What We’ll Eat in a Bigger\, Hotter\, Smarter World\, released June 2019. Little’s first book was Power Trip: The Story of America’s Love Affair with Energy. Little has written about food\, energy\, the environment and technology for publications including the New York Times\, Washington Post\, The New Yorker\, Bloomberg\, Wired\, and Rolling Stone. She has interviewed figures ranging from Barack Obama to Lindsey Graham. \nShared Charity: Fisk University Scholarship Fund \nPresider: Pat Debrovner \nFREE and open to the public. SUMMARY:Jazz Cafe: Rob Fulton
DESCRIPTION:“[A] singer who conveys his musical passion abundantly with the sound of a big band as easily as he does with the intimacy of a jazz trio.” -Caribbean Life \n“Fulton brings chills as he performs the most cherished tunes from The Nat King Cole songbook.” -Roz Nixon\, Founder of The Ella Nixon Drive\, quoted in Caribbean Life \n“Standing on the shoulders of legends like: Nat King Cole\, Joe Williams\, Billy Eckstine\, Sarah Vaughan\, Mel Torme\, Al Jarreau\, Jon Hendricks\, Cuba Gooding –Rob Fulton conveys the heart and soul of music.” -Jazz Vocalist Tracy Mothershed \nRob Fulton grew up in Glen Cove\, NY\, breathing\, eating and sleeping music. His mother\, Margaret Sharrock\, a touring Gospel singer\, inspired him to become a musician. \nHe started performing at an early age\, learning guitar after his mother enrolled him in music school. In elementary school\, he played trombone in the marching band; and continued his passion for music by learning piano in college at S.U.N.Y. Old Westbury\, and later as a singer where he was the lead singer of The Dynatones. He is always developing his talent and musicality with coaching from stellar musicians like Dr. Barry Harris\, Marion Cowings\, Janet Lawson\, and Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch. \nWhile he sometimes plays piano (he does most of his own arrangements)\, having the ability to captivate\, emotionally heal\, and uplift the spirit and soul with vocals has always been his desire. \nRob’s great amiability on stage allows you to join him on life’s journey. His voice is warm with a chilled vibe\, with a slight but still soulful vibrato. During one song\, you’re soothed by the romance and beauty of “Blame It On My Youth” or “Embraceable You.” And during the next\, you’ll want to dance as he swings hard with “Yardbird Suite” “A Night In Tunisia” or “Jeannine.” Every song is a journey and an emotional treasure. Rob’s suave style and spiritual base is full of passion\, lushness and swing. \nRob Fulton has performed at some of New York’s finest venues: Snug Harbor\, Minton’s\, Harlem Mist\, Metropolitan Room\, Swing46\, Jazz 966\, The Brownstone Jazz\, and Club Bonafide. \nHis CD\, Rob Fulton Live at Club Bonafide NYC (2018)\, highlights his ease\, affability\, versatility and musicality. He has also performed with influential musicians like Nat Adderley\, Jr.\, Johnny O’Neal\, Patience Higgins\, Les Kurtz\, Bill Saxon\, Eddie Russell\, TK Blue\, Marcus Persiani\, Eric Lemon\, Dave Gibson\, Lafayette Harris\, Gerald Hayes\, Will Terrill\, Stanley Banks\, Dave Colding\, Davell Crawford\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Reggie Workman\, and Bertha Hope. Visit his website at robfultonjazz.com. \nDoors at 6:30. Following our featured artist is an Open Mic hour. \n$10 Members\, $15 non-members\, includes snacks and a beverage (wine\, beer\, soda) \n\nThe Jazz Cafe is curated by John Wilmeth and Steph Walker. Music Director pianist John Wilmeth is a multi-instrumentalist with experience in many genres. He has worked with the likes of Jerry Garcia\, Boz Scaggs\, Al Jarreau\, James Moody\, and Jon Hendricks. Open Mic Emcee Steph Walker is a singer of many genres\, and a poet\, and has performed at such popular jazz venues as Silvana’s\, Flute Bar\, The Metropolitan Room\, and The Triad. \nThe John Wilmeth Jazz Trio includes: Dave Meade\, renowned drummer/percussionist.  Dave has worked with a wide spectrum of artists and musicians\, including Nancy Wilson\, Keely Smith\, and Tony award winning singers Leslie Uggams\, Paulo Szot\, and Diahann Carroll. Meade has toured with Aretha Franklin\, The Mamas and the Papas\, and the Arturo O’Farrill Afro Cuban Orchestra\, to highlight a few.  Back in the day\, Dave played nightly at the world-famous Rainbow Room; and bassist Ratzo Harris\, a Thelonious Monk Competition semi-finalist\, has worked with such musicians as Les Paul\, Charles Lloyd\, and Betty Carter. “Ratzo Harris plays bass that’s living root and steel girder.” (blogcritics). \n“Wonderful! A step back in time.” -D. Berkowitz\, Asheville\, NC \n“Totally delighted the whole evening! Classic intimate place\, delightful people\, and energy the whole time!” – W. T.\, Brentwood\, New York\, NY \n“The venue for the music was wonderful. There were round tables complete with table clothes and nice mood lighting. The chandeliers were dimmed and it was a nightclub atmosphere. The music was excellent and then there was an open mike so I got to see a number of talented neighborhood folks get up and do their thing. Some people even felt moved to dance. I loved it!” -G. Walsh\, Fair Lawn NJ

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Dr. Sandra Steingraber: "The Biologist in Cell Block 3: Science and Civil Disobedience in a Time of Climate Emergency"
DESCRIPTION:The active refusal of a citizen to obey certain laws or commands of a government—civil disobedience—is both a deeply personal act of individual conscience and a powerful political tactic. This lecture examines the history of civil disobedience as a response to social injustice and its current practice as a tool of fossil fuel resistance within the climate justice movement. \nSpeaking both as a PhD ecologist and a civil disobedient\, Sandra Steingraber will argue that civil disobedience can open a cultural and political space for science to speak. Readings from personal essays composed while speaker was incarcerated are interwoven throughout the talk. \nBiologist\, author\, and cancer survivor\, Sandra Steingraber\, Ph.D. writes about climate change\, ecology\, and the links between human health and the environment. Recognized for her ability to serve as a two-way translator between scientists and activists\, Dr. Steingraber has keynoted conferences on human health and the environment throughout the United States and Canada and has been invited to lecture at many medical schools\, hospitals\, and universities–including Harvard\, Yale\, Cornell\, Columbia\, and the Woods Hole Research Center. She has testified in the European Parliament\, at the European Commission\, before the President’s Cancer Panel\, and has participated in briefings to Congress\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, and before United Nations delegates in Geneva\, Switzerland \nShared Charity: Sane Energy Project \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nFREE and open to the public.
