SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Todd Gitlin: The Future of Disinformation (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Of these things we can be sure: Disinformation flourishes. Its channels multiply. There is a large bloc of Americans who find comfort in it\, because it preserves their sense of being an embattled but triumphant community. It is not by itself the cause of our political nightmare\, but it worsens everything. Individuals cannot overcome it by themselves. The forces that sustain it are built in to American politics. It can be defeated but it will not go away on its own. \nTodd Gitlin\, an American writer\, sociologist\, communications scholar\, novelist\, poet\, and not very private intellectual\, is professor of journalism and sociology and chair of the Ph.D. program in Communications at Columbia University. He is also the author of sixteen books\, including Media Unlimited: How the Torrent of Images and Sounds Overwhelms Our Lives; The Twilight of Common Dreams: Why America Is Wracked by Culture Wars; The Sixties: Years of Hope\, Days of Rage; The Whole World Is Watching: Mass Media in the Making and Unmaking of the New Left; Occupy Nation: The Roots\, the Spirit\, and the Promise of Occupy Wall Street; three novels\, Undying\, Sacrifice\, and The Murder of Albert Einstein; and a book of poetry\, Busy Being Born. \nHe has contributed to many books and published widely in general periodicals and scholarly journals. He is also a member of the editorial board of Dissent. Previously\, he was a columnist at the New York Observer and the San Francisco Examiner\, and a regular op-ed contributor to the Los Angeles Times\, San Francisco Chronicle\, and Newsday. His poems have appeared in The New York Review of Books\, Yale Review\, The New Republic\, and Raritan. \nHe holds degrees from Harvard University (mathematics)\, the University of Michigan (political science)\, and the University of California\, Berkeley (sociology). He was the third president of Students for a Democratic Society\, in 1963-64\, and coordinator of the SDS Peace Research and Education Project in 1964-65\, during which time he helped organize the first national demonstration against the Vietnam War and the first American demonstrations against corporate aid to the apartheid regime in South Africa. \nFor sixteen years a professor of sociology and director of the mass communications program at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and then for seven years a professor of culture\, journalism and sociology at New York University. He lectures frequently on culture and politics in the United States and abroad. He has appeared on many National Public Radio programs including Fresh Air as well as PBS\, ABC\, CBS and CNN. He lives in New York City with his wife\, Laurel Cook. \nRead Todd’s full biography at ToddGitlin.net. \n*** \nTo download Zoom ahead of time\, please visit https://zoom.us/download\nNo computer or smartphone? These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Proactive Meditation and Deep Listening (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Led by our own Larry Hurst — When we meditate proactively\, we allow our breath and physical support to help us sense into how we are in each moment. We take time to note whether there is something there that is more than a fleeting distraction and seems to be calling for our particular attention. We listen\, deeply and empathically\, allowing ourselves to follow whatever door opens. This experientially focused way of meditating can help to take us through often stuck places and onto a fresh path within ourselves and in our connections. \nClick here to join at the start time! – Meeting ID 384-422-5692 \nNo computer or smartphone? It may be a meditation session\, a book reading circle\, shared poetry\, a study group or a class run by one of our Leaders\, Joe Chuman or Richard Koral. \nFor more information\, please visit www.ethical.nyc/live.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Classics Behind Bars…and Beyond: The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to forgive someone who has committed crimes? What is our relationship to the way our society handles Justice and Incarceration? Where do our ethics come from? \nRSVP will open soon!\nJoin us as Rutgers Professor of Classics Emily Allen-Hornblower\, The Resident Acting Company\, and mass incarceration survivor Marquis McCray visit Ethical NYC to explore Homer’s Odyssey\, and how it resonates within the lives of those in our society who spent time in the prison system. We’ll dive deep into the poem with actor Joe Goodkin\, followed by a post-show discussion with Joe\, Professor Allen-Hornblower\, and Mr. McCray\, who will speak about how the Odyssey and the classics changed his life. \nAbout the Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Seed Grant:\nThe Public Face of Emotions: Greek Classics and the Role of Emotions in our Lives \nProfessor Emily Allen-Hornblower is moderating a series of public conversations with formerly incarcerated men and women concerning ancient Greek philosophy and literature. Each session is centered on a single emotion\, such as shame\, fear\, or anger. The events will begin with a brief reading from Aristotle and a short performance of an excerpt from Greek tragedy to ground the moderated discussion to follow\, about the role the emotions can or should play in our lives. These communal conversations will give the formerly incarcerated speakers\, the actors\, and the audience an opportunity to engage in a dialogue regarding the interconnectedness between all of us that storytelling and literature bring to light. \nThe Daily Targum: Prisoners Study Classics with Rutgers Professor\nHuffington Post: The Iliad is Doing Hard Time and the Inmates Love It\nRutgers: Emily Allen-Hornblower’s Teachings on Tragic Heroes Resonate With Inmates\nRutgers: For Innovative Teaching in NJ Prisons\, RU Classics Prof Wins Chancellor’s Award \nAbout The Resident Acting Company: \nWe believe theatre engages best with audiences when it is created by artists experienced in working together. We are dedicated to producing a repertory\, strongly rooted in the classics\, which reflects\, enlightens\, and informs our contemporary life. Visit our website at racnyc.org.
