SUMMARY:At Home With the League of Women Voters: "Social Media and Democracy: 4 Things We've Learned That Might Surprise You" with Joshua Tucker
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters’ Rochester Chapter and NYC Chapter host at special joint At Home with the League event! \nJoin Professor Joshua Tucker\, the Co-Director of NYU’s Center for Social Media and Democracy and the co-editor of the recently published Social Media and Democracy: The State of the Field and Prospects for Reform for a presentation of recent research on fake news\, foreign influence campaigns\, hate speech on Twitter\, and the impact of Facebook on ethnic polarization. Tucker is a multi-talented instructor at NYU: He is Professor of Politics\, affiliated Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies\, affiliated Professor of Data Science\, Director of NYU’s Jordan Center for Advanced Study of Russia\, a co-Director of the NYU Center for Social Media and Politics. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Randy Best: "Staying Connected Across The Political Divide" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In today’s increasingly polarized environment\, it is increasingly difficult to communicate across the Political Divide and maintain relationships. How do we separate the personal and the political? It is particularly difficult when people that we care about are on the other side. How can we keep relationships with those with such differing versions of truth and reality? How can we connect without compromising our values? Does maintaining relationships lead to complicity in aberrant views? When is confrontation productive or necessary? \nRandy Best has been a life-long member of Ethical Culture. Born in St. Louis\, Randy grew up attending the St. Louis Ethical Society\, where his mother is still an active member. Since 2016\, Randy has served as the Leader of the Northern Virginia Ethical Society. He is also Dean of Leader Training for the American Ethical Union. Previously\, he was Leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle and the Ethical Society Without Walls. \nRandy received a B.A. from Grinnell College and a Master’s Degree from Harvard University. He is a graduate of the Humanist Institute\, a certified Mediator\, and Pastoral Counselor. Randy divides his time between Northern Virginia and Durham North Carolina\, where he lives with his wife Sarah Howe\, a ceramic artist. They have four grown children whom they homeschooled. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Steve Serling \nThis Week’s Charity: Rise & Root Farm \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:The American Slavery Project – The Reverberation Plays Pt. 3: "The Haunted Files & Monologue Mission"
DESCRIPTION:Join The American Slavery Project for the next in the The Reverberation Plays series\, a five-part audio drama series with soundscapes and minimal visuals that dramatize how Black History isn’t an event\, it’s a legacy. Each premiere is accompanied by a scholar-led conversation illuminating the themes of each play. All events will be streamed with a live talkback following the show. Phylicia Rashad also returns to direct our last premiere\, “Second Sight”! \nAbout The Haunted Files: \nIn 1904\, a young black infant named Hazel is left on a doorstep. She is taken in by a family from whom she later runs away. Thus begins an odyssey of arrests\, institutionalization\, and medical intervention — all in an effort to cure her of “immorality.” Characters are real people from the files of the Eugenics Records Office in Cold Spring Harbor. Performed by Antu Yacob and Stina Nielsen. Directed by Melissa Maxwell. \nAbout Monologue Mission: \nTwo high school students reflect on their experiences being immigrants during the last presidential administration. Performed by J.D. Mollison and Kyla Garcia. Directed by Judy Tate. \nPost-Performance Discussion: “’Good Genes’ and America’s Quest for Racial Purity” with Jack Tchen and Leora Fuller the original curators of The Haunted Files exhibition. \nClick here to RSVP!\n\nUpcoming in The Reverberation Plays: \nMAY 14: “Disunion” by Judy Tate\nJUNE 18: “Second Sight” by Judy Tate \nThe Reverberation Series is made possible by grants from The Black Seed as well as Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and Creative Communities\, made possible by NY Dept. of Cultural Affairs\, New York State Council on the Arts and distributed by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. #Reverberations

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In this dazzling novel\, the book that established his international reputation\, Roberto Bolaño tells the story of two modern-day Quixotes—the last survivors of an underground literary movement\, perhaps of literature itself—on a tragicomic quest through a darkening\, entropic universe: our own. The Savage Detectives is an exuberant\, raunchy\, wildly inventive\, and ambitious novel from one of the greatest Latin American authors of our age. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor complete access information\, including Meeting ID\, please see this week’s Ethical Weekly email or contact Gunther.\n \nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. Zoom is available for tablets and smartphones in both main app stores\, Apple and Google Android. Attendees don’t need to register for a Zoom account although it’s free and helpful. To join a meeting\, simply click the event’s invitation link above.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Nori Rost: "All Is Well\, Just Not Yet" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:We’ve rounded the corner on a year of social distancing\, virtual relationships\, and shuttered buildings; theatre and concert venues are cautiously opening to reduced crowds. Many of us have been longing to return to business as usual\, but those days are gone. \nHow can we go forward into this new normal? How can we learn the lessons this pandemic has taught? And how are we to go deeper into the mission of our ethical union as we face the challenges this pandemic has left behind? \nDr. Nori Rost has travelled a circuitous path in search of truth and meaning. She was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years before making a UU turn 13 years ago. Since 2008\, she has served as minister of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church. \nNori calls herself an “optimistic humanist” and believes we each have within us something that calls us to our highest selves. Whether that’s the evolutionary impulse that first led us ashore\, the universal innate experience of love\, or something else\, she’s still following that call and is always in awe of the miracles and mysteries of life in its most common forms. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received numerous awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. She also holds a Certificate for Spiritual Direction from the Benet Hill Center in Colorado Springs\, Colorado. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nThis Week’s Charity: Rise & Root Farm \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:AEU All-Society Platform - Rep. Jamie Raskin: "Partisanship\, Fascism and the Common Good: Defining Public Ethics After the January 6th Insurrection" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Following unforeseen circumstances in January\, the rapidly proceeding insurrection attempt at the Capitol and ensuing impeaching proceedings\, Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) was unable to give his scheduled presentation at our previous All Society Platform on January 31st. However\, the AEU is thrilled to announce that he will be joining us for our next All Society Event on March 28th at 11:00 am EST! \nFor members who were unable to get into last month’s All Society Platform\, not to worry – we have upped our Zoom audience capacity to 1\,000 participants! Congressman Raskin’s platform will also be streaming live on AEU’s Facebook page beginning at 11:00 am EST. \nCongressman Jamie Raskin (MD-8) was Lead House Manager in the second Senate impeachment Trial of former President Donald Trump\, which ended with a 57-43 vote to convict and was the most bipartisan presidential impeachment process in U.S. history.  A professor of constitutional law\, bestselling author\, and former Whip of the Maryland State Senate\, Raskin has been on the frontlines of defending democracy against authoritarianism in our time and authored the successful House Resolution calling on Vice-President Pence to activate the provisions of the 25th Amendment after the failed coup of January 6th to prevent any further descent into chaos and violence at the hands of Donald Trump. \nRaskin introduced the Resolution adopted overwhelmingly by the House (386-3) in the first week of December in 2020 calling for release of all religious prisoners on earth and for repeal of all nations’ blasphemy\, apostasy and heresy laws\, which involve imaginary offenses and are notoriously used to oppress and persecute innocent people.   \nRep. Raskin is co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus which he co-founded with Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA).  Raskin came to the attention of freethinkers nationally when he testified in the Maryland State Senate in 2006 against a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and answered a right-wing Senator who asserted that the Bible “defines marriage as one man and one woman” with this retort: “Senator\, with all due respect\, when you took your oath of office you put your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.” \nClick here to join the AEU All-Society Platform at start time | Meeting ID 835 9517 6809 \n***** \nPost-Platform Discussion\nImmediately following the AEU national platform with Rep. Raskin\, head to our own Ethical NYC room to discuss and chat!\nClick here to join | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Hour of The Star by Clarice Lispector (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The devastating final work by Brazil’s greatest modern writer tells the haunting tale of Macabea\, a typist who lives in the slums of Rio – underfed\, sickly\, and unloved\, yet inwardly free. Edmund White called Lispector “an emblematic twentieth-century artist who belongs in the same pantheon as Kafka and Joyce.” \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella.
