DESCRIPTION:In this bitterly funny novel\, a writer finds himself tossed into a chaotic world of schoolboys by a diabolical professor who wishes to reduce him to childishness. Published in Poland in 1937\, Ferdydurke catapulted the young author to fame. Deemed scandalous and subversive by Nazis\, Stalinists\, and the Polish Communist regime in turn\, the novel was banned in Poland for decades. It has nonetheless remained one of the most influential works of 20th-century European literature. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. DESCRIPTION:Join us in-person or online this Sunday\, October 3 for our Sunday Platform address by Society Leader and long-time reproductive rights activist Dr. Nori Rost examining the ethical foundation of choice: \nIn recent months we have seen attacks on women’s right to reproductive freedom\, most notably in the egregious legislation passed in Texas last month which essentially makes it illegal to obtain an abortion in the state with draconian punishments for those seeking an abortion and the doctors who would help them. \nWhat does our ethical orientation teach us about choice and how can we make our voices heard? Join us in the wake of marches for reproductive freedom across the country (including here in NYC) as we explore this important\, controversial topic. \nDr. Nori Rost is Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Prior to her arrival at the Society\, she served as the settled minister at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, Colorado. \nDr. Rost has been a prominent activist for reproductive freedom since attending her first NARAL event when she was 17. She has served on the National Clergy Advisory Board for Planned Parenthood\, and was volunteer chaplain at Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains (PPRM) in Colorado Springs\, CO. \nIn 2015\, when a domestic terrorist attacked the local Planned Parenthood clinic\, killing three people\, Dr. Rost held a vigil that attracted several hundred people and garnered international media attention\, including The New Times\, the New York Post\, the Guardian\, and Al Jazeera. She was also interviewed about the shooting by WNYC. \nDr. Rost also led a group of supporters to PPRM every March 10\, National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day\, to deliver thank you cards\, chocolates\, and balloons to the hard-working staff. She was also a featured speaker at the Colorado We are Women Rally in 2012 and served on the planning team for the Colorado Springs Womxn’s March\, 2017-2020. \nDr. Rost holds a Master of Divinity from Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado and a Doctorate of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. A champion of justice and equity for all\, Dr. Rost is the recipient of the Tri-State NAACP Award of Excellence in Religious Affairs and the Indy Legacy Award for her work in the queer community. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. DESCRIPTION:The first rule of guerilla warfare is to know your terrain and use it to your advantage. The political landscape of today is one of signs and symbols\, stories and spectacles. Since 2010\, the Center for Artistic Activism has trained grassroots activists around the world how to navigate this terrain. We teach social change agents how to map their cultural landscape and apply artistic methods and aesthetic perspectives in order to design more captivating tactics and more effective strategies. And\, as imagination is critical in this endeavor\, we utilize Utopia; not necessarily as a goal to be reached but as a dream to guide. In this participatory presentation\, the rationale behind artistic activism will be explained\, examples provided\, and techniques demonstrated. \nStephen Duncombe\, Ph.D. is Professor of Media and Culture at New York University and the author and editor of six books\, including Dream: Re-Imagining Progressive Politics in an Age of Fantasy and The Art of Activism. He is also the creator of the Open Utopia\, an open-access\, open-source\, web-based edition of Thomas More’s Utopia. DESCRIPTION:The Police Reform Organizing Project contends that the everyday practices of the NYPD\, as a matter of intentional policy\, inflict harm and hardship on our city’s most vulnerable populations: low-income persons of color\, individuals struggling with mental illness\, unhoused people\, sex workers\, street vendors\, and homeless LGBTQ youth. \nBob Gangi will describe PROP’s activities and strategies aimed at exposing and ending these abusive and racist practices and at creating a safe\, just\, and truly inclusive city for all New Yorkers. \nBob Gangi has been an activist\, community organizer and public policy advocate in New York City for over 40 years. Before he founded the Police Reform Organizing Project in April 2011\, he served as Executive Director of the Correctional Association for over 29 years. He is a recognized expert on criminal justice and law enforcement issues with a particular focus on police and prison concerns. He has cultivated ongoing relationships with members of the media and policymakers which have been critical to the CA and PROP’s advocacy and public education efforts. He has written or co-written numerous op-ed pieces for the New York Times\, Newsday\, and Albany Times Union. \nIn 2012 Bob was the recipient of the American Ethical Union’s prestigious Elliott-Black Award\, acknowledging his enduring dedication to the rights of vulnerable people caught up in the criminal justice system and his life’s work fighting for sweeping prison and police reform.
