I am not speaking here only of the songs and poems and paintings that have always been part of movements for political and social change\, but of the movements themselves\, their political ideas and forms of protest. Every important social movement reconfigures the world in the imagination. What was obscure comes forward\, lies are revealed\, memory shaken\, new delineations drawn over the old maps: it is from this new way of seeing the present that hope for the future emerges…No one can stop us from imagining another kind of future\, one which departs from the terrible cataclysm of violent conflict\, of hateful divisions\, poverty and suffering. She has created more than 45 works and is the leading exponent of the style of early performance technologist Loïe Fuller (1862-1928). Sperling has expanded Fuller’s genre into the 21st century\, deploying it in the context of contemporary and environmental performance forms. Sperling earned a World Choreography Award nomination for her work on the French feature film “The Dancer” and was commissioned to create new work featured in a forthcoming Fuller documentary. In 2014\, Sperling participated in a polar science mission—as the first choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker—and danced on Arctic sea ice. Since then much of her work has focused on engaging with climate change. DESCRIPTION:This 1957 novel is Daphne’s song of survival but also the author’s: Frame was herself misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and scheduled for brain surgery. She was famously saved only when she won New Zealand’s premier fiction prize. The book confronts life in mental institutions and is equally valuable for its poetry\, its incisive satire\, and its acute social observations. A sensitively rendered portrait of childhood and adolescence and a testament to the power of imagination. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Ethical Culture has been historically committed to taking on the larger issues in each era in which it has found itself. Perhaps what is sometimes lost is that Ethical Culture is no less committed to the private lives of individuals and the more intimate sphere of social relations. \nI contend that in these times\, when feelings are often made raw and barbed by the fears and challenges that impinge on us\, that being able to nurture kindness in the smaller sectors of life is vitally important. \nI plan to dedicate my address to the cultivation of kindness and why we should not overlook this essential value which more than most reveals our humanity. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served since 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. This provides her with a powerful vantage point from which to critically examine the current moment\, when the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the power structures of the empire in unprecedented ways while sparking the most visible resistance it has ever seen. Join us during these short days and long nights\, as we explore the importance of our connections to each other\, to all living things\, and to the great community of Mother Earth. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. Sonja describes two essential factors that guided her writing in Stamped (For Kids)\, and they are critical for young readers. She addresses the importance of young people having access to books where they’re able to read for truth—the both painful and celebratory history of the United States. And she provides insights on the importance of young people accessing books where they’re able to read for affirmation—where the humanity of people\, specifically those who have been oppressed\, is affirmed. \nDR. SONJA CHERRY-PAUL is the New York Times best-selling author of Stamped (For Kids). She is an educator\, author\, and the co-founder of the Institute for Racial Equity in Literacy. Sonja is the Director of Diversity and Equity at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University and the host of The Black Creators Series. She develops curricula that centers the work of racial literacy and culturally-relevant teaching in K-12 schools. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: "I Am Spiritual but Not Religious. What on Earth Does That Mean?"
DESCRIPTION:It is now found that almost 25 percent of Americans now are unaffiliated with a religion. For younger generations\, this number climbs to at least 30 percent. This means that\, if the so-called “nones” were a denomination\, they would comprise the largest in the the United States\, more numerous than Catholics or evangelicals. \nIt is assumed that of this cohort about ten percent are atheists and agnostics. If so\, the majority are either religiously totally indifferent or proclaim some free-lance belief\, hence “spiritual but not religious.” \nBut what could this possibly mean? I hope to provide a possible answer – which is also a personal confession. \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served since 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County.
