DESCRIPTION:The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (aka the Triboro) is actually a complex of bridges and elevated expressway viaducts linking Manhattan\, the Bronx\, and Queens. On the Manhattan side\, it begins with the bridge over the Harlem River to Randalls Island\, continues with the bridge over Bronx Kill\, and then the bridge over Hell Gate to Astoria\, Queens. \nVeteran Easy Walkers may recall that our first attempt at crossing the RFK Bridge was cut short by a police closure of the most spectacular section\, the Hell Gate suspension bridge. Disappointed\, we promised ourselves we’d reschedule it. The time has come! \nDetails: Meeting at Ethical\, corner of W. 64 and CPW at 9:30\, we’ll take the #1 train at W. 66th and Broadway to 103rd Street\, where we’ll transfer to the M60 and take that to 125th and Second Avenue\, the Manhattan side of the bridge. When we reach Astoria\, we’ll lunch at the Neptune Diner\, probably the most famous diner in New York. We’ll return home via the M60 and #1. (The N train is also nearby in Astoria.) There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. \nThis month: Dr. Suzanne Cope \nPOWER HUNGRY: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer and Their Fight to Feed a Movement is the true story of two unsung women who used food as a weapon for social and political change in the Black Freedom Movement: Cleo Silvers\, a Black Panther in New York City whose work focused on child hunger and inner city health care\, and Aylene Quin\, a tavern owner and bootlegger in McComb\, MS\, whose passion was voting rights. Both were attacked by government forces. These parallel stories\, separated by a few years and a few thousand miles\, intersect in surprising ways and provide a model for activists today. CULTURE written on every line of their faces – an audience as you would so enjoy.” -Mary Locke (Alain Locke’s mother) \nMary Locke writes Culture with a capital “C”. Culture here is more than an elitist escape for Black Victorians and Intellectual Freethinkers at the turn of the century\, it is the cultivation of an ideal society\, one with black thriving futures. This kind of Cultural vision within our pre-dated Humanist community can become a blueprint for people on the margins rooted in oppression within a precarious existence. With this in mind\, let us contemplate Humanism’s response to Culture. How does Culture inform our Humanist practices and values? Spices and cooking oils are requested as well\, as they are not covered by SNAP and the price of cooking oil has skyrocketed.  \nAn educator for 10 years in the inner-city schools of New York City\, Washington D.C and Baltimore\, Maryland\, Rev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper was challenged by the prevalent divide the black and brown community still faced despite their solidarity in culture. Much of his teaching was dedicated to incorporating unconventional schools of thought—expeditionary learning\, performance studies\, singing chants\, and helping students develop self-esteem by creating a micro-community that could advocate their own needs. \nJé completed a Master of Professional Studies in Arts and Cultural Management at Pratt Institute. Most recently\, he earned a Master of Arts in Theology with a concentration in Interfaith and Interreligious Engagement at Union Theological Seminary. Last year Jé was ordained as an Interfaith minister through New Seminary\, a practicum-based program through which he holds his license. DESCRIPTION:“Garmenting: Costuming as Contemporary Art” at M.A.D. is the first global survey exhibition dedicated to the use of clothing as a medium of visual art\, showing the work of 35 artists. By making or altering clothing for expressive purposes\, these artists create garments\, sculpture\, installation\, and performance art that transform dress into a critical tool. Garmenting uses the language of fashion to challenge traditional divisions of form and function\, cast a critical eye on the construction of gender\, advance political activism\, and address cultural difference. And it’s fun and thought-provoking to look at! \nDetails: We’ll meet at Ethical at 10:30 and walk down to the museum at Columbus Circle to enjoy the exhibit. General Admission is $18\, seniors $14. DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary advances in biology raise expectations for patients and families waiting for cures. Unfortunately\, the path from breakthroughs to drugs is torturous and unpredictable. Looking at two prominent examples\, RNA interference and genome editing\, we can extract some common themes and key lessons applicable to future discoveries. \nAbout Our Speaker \nDavid Bumcrot\, PhD\, is Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of Research at CAMP4 Therapeutics\, where he oversees the Biology\, Data Science and Discovery teams. \nPrior to joining CAMP4\, Dr. Bumcrot led groups at innovative biotech companies advancing novel technologies towards clinical development. He was one of the first employees at Alnylam pharmaceuticals where he spent ten years working to make RNA interference-based drugs a reality for multiple indications\, including key contributions to a first-in-class systemically administered siRNA therapeutic tested in an oncology clinical trial. Dr. Bumcrot then moved on to Editas Medicine where his team established the company’s initial therapeutic programs utilizing groundbreaking CRISPR technology. \nDr. Bumcrot received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania.
