DESCRIPTION:As incarceration rates for men drop in some states\, efforts to de-carcerate jails and prisons have largely left women behind\, and women have become the fastest-growing segment of the incarcerated population. At the same time\, it’s women who are leading the charge to right these wrongs.\n\nJoin the New York Society For Ethical Culture\, The Social Justice Network\, and the National Action Network for a film screening and panel discussion to explore this important topic.\nThis event will host a screening of the acclaimed documentary Mothers of Bedford\, which highlights the challenges of women\, families\, and the impact of the criminal justice system in the lives of women here in the United States. Minerva Pascual of the Social Justice Network will give an introduction. McShane’s documentary depicts the stresses that prison places on a family while also painting a beautiful picture of the power of a mother’s unconditional love as they take parenting classes\, enroll in in-prison education\, phone in for parent-teacher conferences\, spend time with their kids at the prison’s Children’s Center. We see the struggles and joys these women face as prisoners and mothers. \nVisit our website to learn more about the Social Service Board\, including their Televisiting Program that helps children maintain contact with an incarcerated family member. You can review the release here. \nJeffrey Deskovic will speak about his arrest\, wrongful conviction\, and exoneration after 16 years of wrongful imprisonment for a murder and rape he did not commit; reintegrating back into society; becoming an advocate and attorney; founding the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice and its track record; pending legislation aimed at preventing wrongful conviction; ways to get involved; and his universal formula for overcoming adversities and then turning them around to help others in a similar position.\n\nJeffrey Deskovic\, Esq.\, M.A.\, is an attorney and founder of the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice\, which has freed 11 wrongfully convicted people and helped pass 9 laws aimed at preventing such injustices. An advisory board member of the national coalition group It Could Happen To You\, which has branches in NY\, PA\, and CA. Jeff also sits on the Global Advisory Council of Restorative Justice International. Jeff served 16 years in prison (from age 17 to 32) for a murder and rape he did not commit\, prior to being exonerated by DNA evidence that identified the actual perpetrator. SUMMARY:Celia Fisher: Why Parents Resist COVID Vaccines for Their Children
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nTo date\, 38% of U.S. children ages 5 – 12 have received the COVID-19 vaccine. Our national survey of mothers in the U.S.\, found that reasons for and against vaccination include differences in beliefs about children’s susceptibility to and severity of the disease; trust or distrust in vaccines in general and in the effectiveness and safety of the COVID vaccine; whether vaccination has family and community support; confidence in FDA and physician recommendations; and personal values. Understanding parents’ pediatric vaccination decision-making has important implications for public health policies promoting children’s health during the current and future pandemics. \nThe barrage of conflicting scientific\, government\, and social media messaging regarding children’s susceptibility to COVID-19 and the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine has created significant challenges for parents deciding whether to vaccinate their children against the disease. \nAbout Dr. Celia Fisher \nCelia B. Fisher\, Ph.D. is the Fordham University Marie Ward Doty Endowed University Chair in Ethics\, founding Director of the Center for Ethics Education and Professor of Psychology. She also directs the HIV/Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Institute funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. With over 300 articles and books\, Dr. Fisher is internationally known for her contributions to research and practice promoting the rights and welfare of vulnerable children and adults from diverse communities. Her book\, Decoding the Ethics Code: A Practical Guide for Psychologist (Sage Publications) now in its 5th edition\, is required in professional psychology training programs across the U.S. Dr. Fisher has chaired and served on numerous government ethics oversight committees including for the Department of Health and Human Services\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, the National Institutes of Health\, the National Academy of Medicine\, and the NYS Board for Psychology. She has also chaired major revisions for the Ethics Codes of the American Psychological Association\, the American Public Health Association\, and the Society for Research in Child Development.
