SUMMARY:Share and Learn Field Trip with Andrew Edlin: Outsider Art and My Uncle Paul
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about a panoply of creative activities brought to you by members\, friends\, relatives\, and neighbors. Learn about and enjoy something new! 2nd and 4th Thursdays. \nThis month we’re taking a field trip: \nSpeaker: Andrew Edlin\nTitle: Outsider Art and My Uncle Paul\nLocation: Andrew Edlin Gallery\, 212 Bowery\, New York\, NY\nGallery website: https://www.edlingallery.com/\nGallery phone: 212-206-9723 \nFor those who would like to go together to the gallery:  Meet at the Ethical lobby at 4:10pm. We will walk to Columbus Circle and take the B subway to Broadway-Lafayette. The gallery is a 10 minute walk to 212 Bowery: exit subway and proceed east on 2nd Ave and south on Bowery. The gallery is just beyond the New Museum. \nFor those who can’t make it\, host Carol Portlock will also be streaming the gallery on Zoom from her phone! \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 884 1105 5819 | Passcode 140176 \n—\nAbout the Andrew Edlin Gallery \nThe Andrew Edlin Gallery was established in 2001 in a loft space in Chelsea with a program focused on outsider artists. Since that time\, the gallery has participated in numerous art fairs including the Outsider Art Fair\, Armory Show\, Frieze\, Art Forum Berlin\, FIAC\, Independent\, Art Brussels and Art Basel Miami Beach. In 2010\, Andrew Edlin’s satellite company\, Wide Open Arts\, acquired the Outsider Art Fair and has been its sole owner since that time. \nAbout the Exhibit: \nThe truth is that if it hadn’t been for Paul Edlin (1931 – 2008)\, this gallery never would have existed. When I first saw his postage stamp art in 1996 at Gordon College in Massachusetts I was deeply moved by the shimmering effect the room full of mosaic collages had on me. At the age of 65\, it was Uncle Paul’s first solo show. I knew he’d been making art for years but I didn’t realize that for the last 15 years he had been almost exclusively using stamps to compose his paintings. He chose the stamps from many nations for colors and visual texture. He sliced them into tiny pieces\, which he used like mosaic tiles\, gluing them on museum board until his compositions were finalized. His scenes of people and mythological figures\, animals and objects suggest a mystical personal cosmology. His 16 x 20 inch collages could take as long as three months to complete\, and he worked diligently every day\, alone in his one-room New York apartment. \nUncle Paul’s art is\, in a way\, the soul of this gallery. I remember showing his work in the early days\, around 2002\, when a visitor from Eastern Europe came in and said something to the effect that “Anybody from anywhere can find a way to relate to this work.” \n(Triptych above by Paul Edlin) \nIn addition to Paul Edlin’s stamp collages\, we will see a new exhibit at the gallery: \nBy Anne McCoy \n \nBy Paulina Peavy \n \nBy Olga Spiegel

SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series with Joe Chuman: 'Twilight of the Self: The Decline of the Individual in Late Capitalism' with Michael J. Thompson (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In his work\, Twilight of the Self: The Decline of the Individual in Late Capitalism\, political theorist Michael J. Thompson argues that modern societies are witnessing a decline in one of the core building blocks of modernity: the autonomous self. \nFar from being an illusion of the Enlightenment\, Thompson contends that the individual is a defining feature of the project to build a modern democratic culture and polity. One of the central reasons for its demise in recent decades has been the emergence of what he calls the “cybernetic society\,” a cohesive totalization of the social logics of the institutional spheres of economy\, culture and polity. These logics have been progressively defined by the imperatives of economic growth and technical-administrative management of labor and consumption\, routinizing patterns of life\, practices\, and consciousness throughout the culture. Evolving out of the neoliberal transformation of economy and society since the 1980s\, the cybernetic society has transformed how that the individual is articulated in contemporary society. Thompson examines the various pathologies of the self and consciousness that result from this form of socialization—such as hyper-reification\, alienated moral cognition\, false consciousness\, and the withered ego—in new ways to demonstrate the extent of deformation of modern selfhood. Only with a more robust\, more socially embedded concept of autonomy as critical agency can we begin to reconstruct the principles of democratic individuality and community. \nFREE in person at the Puffin Cultural Forum in Teaneck\, NJ (RSVP Required) and livestreaming on YouTube below.\nBuy the book here or your wherever books are sold \n \n\n\nMichael J. Thompson is Professor of Political Theory at William Paterson University. He is the author of The Politics of Inequality (2007)\, The Domestication of Critical Theory (2016)\, and\, most recently\, The Specter of Babel: A Reconstruction of Political Judgment (2020). \nAbout the Interview Series & Dr. Chuman: \nThe Puffin Cultural Forum is proud to present our “Puffin Interview Series with Dr. Joe Chuman.” On the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. Dr. Chuman recently retired from his post as the leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County after forty-six years. He has taught at Columbia University\, Hunter College\, and the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, The Hill and many other periodicals.
