SUMMARY:Joe Chuman: How Did We Get Here and What Is to Be Done?
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWith the last election\, we pulled back from the brink of losing our democracy. But deed-rooted problems continue to plague American society – social divisions\, tribalism\, irrationality\, the spurning of expertise\, and escalating violence. \nHow did society reach this point and how\, as Ethical Culturists\, do we need to direct ourselves? \nMy talk will be a look at changes in the social landscape that began in the 1960s\, that helped bring us to this point. I will also look at the need to retain our values and\, steps that need to be taken to restore normalcy and security to American society. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. During his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. Currently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required for in-person attendance. Masks are optional but strongly encouraged. \nMonthly Collection: Lower Eastside Girls Club \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: Science vs. Ethics (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nThis week: \nDavid Sabatini was a respected researcher focusing untangling the cellular mysteries critical in the study of neurodegenerative diseases\, cancer\, diabetes\, and aging. A Nobel prize was potentially in his future. All that came crashing down when he was accused of sexual harassment\, bullying\, and creating a toxic work environment. He was dismissed from his position at the prestigious Whitehead University in Boston in 2021 and has been unable to land a new position due to this controversy. Now 2 donors are funding $5 million each a year for 5 years to establish a new research lab for him to continue his work. Should the importance of his research take precedence over his unethical behavior? \nhttps://www.science.org/content/article/prominent-biologist-david-sabatini-out-mit-after-breaching-sexual-relationship-policy \nhttps://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/02/07/metro/new-funding-controversial-mit-whitehead-institute-scientist-david-sabatini-draws-divided-reactions/ \nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Vaccination is required for in-person attendance. SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Selfishness and Isolation
DESCRIPTION:Notice: This week’s gathering will be in Ceremonial Hall on our 4th Floor. \nWe live in a society in which it seems the majority of people are more focused on getting what they want or keeping what they have over and above the needs of others or public safety (as in the case of gun hoarding.) How can we create a more expansive\, compassionate society that welcomes all to the table? \nMarch Theme: Me and My Shadow \nEthical Culture founder\, philosopher Felix Adler\, discusses the three spiritual pains of isolation\, meaninglessness\, powerlessness. Over and against this are things he names as shadows such as selfishness\, narrowness\, ignorance. This month we examine how these show up in our lives personally and globally today. \nIn-person and online! Join Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimaging of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. Refreshments will be served! \nWatch Online! DESCRIPTION:Two performances! Friday\, March 10 at 7:00pm and Sunday\, March 12\, at 1:30pm! \nOur long-running staged reading and discussion series continues with Go Down\, Moses by Dana Leslie Goldstein: \nIt’s 1985 at a small liberal university\, where two old comrades in the civil rights struggle have found berths as ethics professor and dean. Allen\, Dajour Chuck\, Nadia Diamond\, Jesse Friedman\, Charles E. Gerber\, Eleanor Pearson\, Shelby Ronea. Written by Dana Leslie Goldstein. Directed by Tai Thompson. SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Narrowness and Meaninglessness
DESCRIPTION:When people tend to see the world through the narrow lens of their own religious\, cultural\, or personal beliefs\, rather than seeing things from a more universal perspective\, the result is a sense of meaninglessness in the lives of those who have been erased or excluded from the narrow views of others. What antidote can we offer to help people find meaning and purpose in their lives? SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series w/ Joe Chuman and David A. Hollinger: 'Christianity’s American Fate: How Religion Became More Conservative and Society More Secular' (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This event is being hosted by the Puffin Cultural Forum. For details and to RSVP\, please visit their website. Livestream information is below. \nEvent Date and Time: March 5\, 2023 4:00 pm\nCost: $0\nLocation: Youtube.com/c/PuffinCulturalForum\nTickets and Reservations \nThe Puffin Cultural Forum continues its monthly author interview series with Dr. Joe Chuman. David A. Hollinger’s “Christianity’s American Fate: How Religion Became More Conservative and Society More Secular” traces the rise of evangelicalism and the decline of mainline Protestantism in American religious and cultural life. How did American Christianity become synonymous with conservative white evangelicalism? This sweeping work by a leading historian of modern America traces the rise of the evangelical movement and the decline of mainline Protestantism’s influence on American life. In Christianity’s American Fate\, David Hollinger shows how the Protestant establishment\, adopting progressive ideas about race\, gender\, sexuality\, empire\, and divinity\, liberalized too quickly for some and not quickly enough for others. After 1960\, mainline Protestantism lost members from both camps—conservatives to evangelicalism and progressives to secular activism. A Protestant evangelicalism that was comfortable with patriarchy and white supremacy soon became the country’s dominant Christian cultural force. \nHollinger explains the origins of what he calls Protestantism’s “two-party system” in the United States\, finding its roots in America’s religious culture of dissent\, as established by seventeenth-century colonists who broke away from Europe’s religious traditions; the constitutional separation of church and state\, which enabled religious diversity; and the constant influx of immigrants\, who found solidarity in churches. Hollinger argues that the United States became not only overwhelmingly Protestant but Protestant on steroids. By the 1960s\, Jews and other non-Christians had diversified the nation ethnoreligiously\, inspiring more inclusive notions of community. But by embracing a socially diverse and scientifically engaged modernity\, Hollinger tells us\, ecumenical Protestants also set the terms by which evangelicals became reactionary. \nWatch live here! \n \n\nAbout the Author\nDavid A. Hollinger is the Preston Hotchkis Professor of History\, emeritus at the University of California\, Berkeley. His specialties are American intellectual history and American ethnoracial history. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow\, a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences\, a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study\, and Harmsworth Professor of the University of Oxford. \nAbout the Interview Series & Dr. Chuman \nThe Puffin Cultural Forum is proud to present our “Puffin Interview Series with Dr. Joe Chuman.” On the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. Dr. Chuman recently retired from his post as the leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County after forty-six years. He has taught at Columbia University\, Hunter College\, and the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, The Hill and many other periodicals.

SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Ignorance and Powerlessness
DESCRIPTION:Using the art of Kara Walker’s Silhouettes we will explore the shadow of ignorance and how that leads to the spiritual pain of powerlessness through the lens of American historical trauma and how we are called to respond today.
