SUMMARY:Akeem Browder: The Kalief Browder Story
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! If you’re planning to attend in-person\, please RSVP on Eventbrite! \nThe story of Kalief Browder will be discussed with the help of videos created by the Kalief Browder Foundation. Akeem Browder will discuss the effects of Solitary confinement and incarceration in NYC at Rikers Island\, and the conditions of Kalief’s incarceration comparative to the young boy (Kalief) prior to his arrest and wrongful incarceration. Akeem will discuss the work done in Kalief’s legacy i.e. the federal law w/Pres. Obama the CJR laws passed in Kaliefs name and the continued work of the KBF and how people can be involved. \n20 people have died in New York City Jails this year and Rikers is the deadliest it’s been in 25 years. The fight to keep Rikers Island open when my brother suffered a wrong incarceration and inevitable death sentence is unscrupulous. This will undoubtedly lead to more Black\, brown\, and low-income New Yorkers being incarcerated at Rikers. This is unacceptable! My family was promised Rikers would be shutdown and I wont stop fighting until we get just that! -Akeem Browder \nIf you’re planning to attend in-person\, please RSVP on Eventbrite! \nAFTERNOON SCREENING AND FUNDRAISER\nJoin us at 1:30pm for a screening of the first episode of Time: The Kalief Browder Story hosted by Akeem. Tickets are $10\, and can be purchased on Eventbrite\, with all funds raised being given to The Kalief Browder Foundation. \nAkeem Browder is a social justice advocate and agent of change. The Bronx native works to honor the legacy of his brother Kalief Browder\, and mother Venida Browder by working with elected official\, lawyers\, doctors\, college students and community based organizations to change laws\, policies and regulations that devastate poor communities and families that have been impacted by mass incarceration and solitary confinement in State prisons. Akeem ran for Mayor of NYC in 2017 to show his commitment to narrative change\, social justice and equity for all. Currently he is finishing a postgraduate degree in Sociology. \nHe is an outspoken advocate for the rights of people disenfranchised and deprived of equity. Akeem serves as a national catalyst\, changing the injustices that currently exist in the justice\, education and mental health system \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required for in-person attendance. Masks are optional but strongly encouraged. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nMonthly Collection: Kalief Browder Foundation \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: The Shadow of the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:This month marks 3 years since The Great Shut Down when all of us were instructed to stay home to “flatten the curve.” What we thought would be a few weeks at most turned in a pandemic that remains with us\, still. How has the shadow of the pandemic changed your life and perspectives? What silver linings have you found? What would Felix Adler—who lived through the “Spanish” Flu—have done? \nMarch Theme: Me and My Shadow \nEthical Culture founder\, philosopher Felix Adler\, discusses the three spiritual pains of isolation\, meaninglessness\, powerlessness. Over and against this are things he names as shadows such as selfishness\, narrowness\, ignorance. This month we examine how these show up in our lives personally and globally today. \nIn-person and online! Join Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimaging of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. Refreshments will be served! \nWatch Online! SUMMARY:Joe Chuman: How Did We Get Here and What Is to Be Done?
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWith the last election\, we pulled back from the brink of losing our democracy. But deed-rooted problems continue to plague American society – social divisions\, tribalism\, irrationality\, the spurning of expertise\, and escalating violence. \nHow did society reach this point and how\, as Ethical Culturists\, do we need to direct ourselves? \nMy talk will be a look at changes in the social landscape that began in the 1960s\, that helped bring us to this point. I will also look at the need to retain our values and\, steps that need to be taken to restore normalcy and security to American society. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. During his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. Currently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required for in-person attendance. SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: Science vs. Ethics (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nThis week: \nDavid Sabatini was a respected researcher focusing untangling the cellular mysteries critical in the study of neurodegenerative diseases\, cancer\, diabetes\, and aging. A Nobel prize was potentially in his future. All that came crashing down when he was accused of sexual harassment\, bullying\, and creating a toxic work environment. He was dismissed from his position at the prestigious Whitehead University in Boston in 2021 and has been unable to land a new position due to this controversy. Now 2 donors are funding $5 million each a year for 5 years to establish a new research lab for him to continue his work. Should the importance of his research take precedence over his unethical behavior? \nhttps://www.science.org/content/article/prominent-biologist-david-sabatini-out-mit-after-breaching-sexual-relationship-policy \nhttps://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/02/07/metro/new-funding-controversial-mit-whitehead-institute-scientist-david-sabatini-draws-divided-reactions/ \nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Vaccination is required for in-person attendance. SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: Selfishness and Isolation
DESCRIPTION:Notice: This week’s gathering will be in Ceremonial Hall on our 4th Floor. \nWe live in a society in which it seems the majority of people are more focused on getting what they want or keeping what they have over and above the needs of others or public safety (as in the case of gun hoarding.) How can we create a more expansive\, compassionate society that welcomes all to the table? SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater: 'Go Down\, Moses' by Dana Leslie Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:Two performances! Friday\, March 10 at 7:00pm and Sunday\, March 12\, at 1:30pm! \nOur long-running staged reading and discussion series continues with Go Down\, Moses by Dana Leslie Goldstein: \nIt’s 1985 at a small liberal university\, where two old comrades in the civil rights struggle have found berths as ethics professor and dean. Part of the job is training a new crop of activists. When a star student invites a controversial speaker to campus\, free speech becomes a battle cry\, and still festering inequities become impossible to ignore. \nAfter the play\, we’ll moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored by the work. \nPerformed by C.K. Allen\, Dajour Chuck\, Nadia Diamond\, Jesse Friedman\, Charles E. Gerber\, Eleanor Pearson\, Shelby Ronea. Written by Dana Leslie Goldstein. Directed by Tai Thompson. Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner. \nMembers $10\, Public $15 (at door) \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required. Masks are optional but strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: Transparency on Medical Costs (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nThis Week: \nAllegedly\, hospitals and medical care providers are supposed to have full transparency on the costs of services but there is a major lack of compliance and consumers are still being straddled with high medical bills. What can be done to make the system work? Or should we try a new system? \nAmericans support the hospital price transparency rule–but it’s not working. Congress must come together to make it a reality | Fortune \nOpinion | How Much Does Your M.R.I. Cost?
