SUMMARY:Elise Auerbach: Human Rights in Iran at a Critical Juncture
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nIran recently experienced an upheaval as millions of ordinary Iranians protested the death in custody of a young Iranian-Kurdish woman\, Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Joined to their outrage at her death were simmering grievances over the authorities’ pervasive human rights violations against any expression of dissent or non-conformity with the government’s rigid strictures on acceptable conduct. The authorities carried out a predictably harsh crackdown on protesters. \nElise Auerbach\, Amnesty International USA’s country specialist for Iran\, joins us to discuss how at this juncture\, human rights activists both in Iran and out must figure out how to carry on their efforts to end the government’s violations and ensure that all Iranians can enjoy and exercise their basic human rights. \nAbout Elise Auerbach\nElise Auerbach is Amnesty International USA’s country specialist for Iran. Elise has been a country specialist in the AIUSA Middle East Coordination Group since 1995. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Elise is also the acting chair of the AIUSA country specialist committee that oversees the work to provide support for those seeking asylum and other forms of immigration relief. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Dr. Richard Koral \nMonthly Collection: Amnesty International \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required. Masks are optional but encouraged. \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Nori Rost: Grace\, Gratitude\, and Gravy
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nFor many people\, this weekend is synonymous with these words. We gathered around tables with family and friends for a day of gratitude. Many of us also said some form of table grace or went around the table saying what we are thankful for. And what would Thanksgiving be without heaps of gravy? What would happen if we treated grace not as a prayer to be mumbled\, but a life to be lived? What would happen if we gave grace to those who have wronged or disappointed us? What happens when we withhold grace? How can we express gratitude in the midst of our messy human lives? In this Platform\, Dr. Rost will invite us to explore these questions and more. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost\nNori is the newest Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. SUMMARY:'Arbor' World Premiere with Artist in Residence Jody Sperling\, Time Lapse Dance\, and Matthew Burtner
DESCRIPTION:The New York Society for Ethical Culture presents an evening of stunning\, nature-inspired works by Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble. The program features the world premiere of Arbor\, a work dwelling on the nature of trees. The work is the latest outgrowth of the long climate-engaged collaboration between Sperling as choreographer and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. \nThe music will be performed live for this one-night-only event by the composer himself and a string quartet of musicians from The Met Orchestra. \nThe evening also features performances of other notable Sperling-Burtner collaborations. Wind Rose\, which renders changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight\, sound\, and touch\, has been described as “a stunning\, spinning white cloud that both moves and is moved by wind” (Karen Hildebrand\, Fjord Review). Plastic Harvest creates a surreal spectacle of plastic proliferation. Collectively\, the evening’s performances stir the senses and provoke contemplation about our relationship to the natural world. \nThe performance will be followed by an artist talkback. \nFREE – Click to RSVP \nTLD Dancers: Frances Barker\, Anika Hunter\, Maki Kitahara\, Nicole Lemelin\, Jody Sperling\, Sarah Tracy & Rathi Varma \nArbor is made possible in part by an ongoing eco-artist-residency at The New York Society for Ethical Culture and with the generous support of the Peck Stacpoole Foundation.
