SUMMARY:Lunch with the League of Women Voters NYC: 'Voting in Jails' with Hazel Weiser
DESCRIPTION:In 1974 the United States Supreme Court recognized a citizen’s right to vote when detained in New York State county jails while serving misdemeanor sentences or awaiting trial. However\, that right has been ignored\, undermined\, and rarely actualized. Here in New York City\, there are more than 6000 people detained at Rikers Island at any one time. Over 85% of those detained are awaiting trial and therefore presumed innocent. Despite concerted efforts by the Voting in Jails Coalition\, of which the League of Women Voters of NYC is a member\, the right to vote in jail remains severely compromised. \nInspired by the stories told by formerly incarcerated people\, the League of Women Voters of New York Criminal Justice Reform Committee saw an opportunity to determine the actual status of voting in all of New York State’s jails. The survey\, conducted during Spring 2023 was published in June 2023\, and its findings are the basis for the latest advocacy\, education\, and legislative efforts to ensure access to the ballot for this often underserved and overlooked population. \nHazel Weiser supervised the data collection and is the author of Voting in New York Jails: A Qualitative Analysis of Access (June 2023). She will review her findings and discuss short term and long term recommendations to improve access to the ballot for those detained in New York City and New York State jails. \nSpeaker: Hazel Weiser is a retired attorney\, law professor\, and law school administrator who has spent the last seven years working with the League of Women Voters of NYC and NY State and currently with Trinity Church Prison Ministry promoting jail-based voting as an aspect of self-empowerment. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a hike to Bull’s Hill in historic Cold Spring\, NY! \nThis 3.5-hour hike will take us to a summit over the Hudson River. You will be rewarded with stunning views of the river and\, on a clear day\, Manhattan. We will take a scenic train ride to the town of Cold Spring. The town\, set on the east bank of Hudson\, has many antique stores\, nice coffee shops\, several restaurants\, and a lovely small park on the riverfront. This town is worth a day’s visit even if you do not hike! \nThe ride on Metro North Hudson line takes an hour and twenty minutes and offers spectacular views of the river. \nTRAVEL INFO: Meet at the information booth at Grand Central at 8:30 am. If you arrive after that time\, find us on the train that leaves at 8:45am (Hudson Line). The round trip ticket is $30 ($20 for seniors). Please buy your own tickets. Bring a water bottle\, light lunch and/or snack for the trail\, and a few dollars for a coffee stop at a local cafe. Q&A follows. \nAbout Allison Applebaum\nDr. Allison Applebaum is an Associate Attending Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK)\, and an Associate Professor of Psychology at Weill Cornell Medicine. She is the Founding Director of the Caregivers Clinic at MSK\, the first program of its kind to provide comprehensive psychosocial care to family and friend caregivers of MSK patients. \nDr. Applebaum’s program of research focuses broadly on the development and dissemination of supportive services for family caregivers. She has published over 100 articles\, reviews\, and book chapters on caregiving\, and is the editor of the textbook Cancer Caregivers (Oxford University Press\, 2019). Dr. Applebaum has received competitive funding for her research\, including awards from the National Cancer Institute\, the National Institute of Nursing Research\, and the American Cancer Society. DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions for a performance of Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\, followed by a special tribute to iconic folk singer Judy Collins\, legendary attorney Martin Garbus\, and former Deputy Chief of the NYPD Mike Osgood. \nVIP reception follows. \nAbout Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\nUnlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\, is the second part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Martin Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nUnlucky Gal tells the story of Jane Doe\, a twenty-seven year old gay black woman who was raped in Prospect Park in April\, 1994. \nTwo days later\, Mike McAlary of the The New York Daily News began publishing a series of three articles\, based on anonymous police sources\, claiming that Jane Doe was lying about her assault\, although the NYPD did have evidence to the contrary. Devastated\, Jane Doe sued McAlary and the The New York Daily News for libel\, but lost. \nIn 2013 the play Lucky Guy\, based on McAlary\, opened on Broadway. Marty Garbus wrote an editorial for The New York Times pointing out that Jane Doe’s story still had not been told\, and asked\, “Who will tell Jane Does’ story?” \nIn 2017\, Michael Osgood\, Deputy Chief of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit\, heard a radio interview that mentioned the Jane Doe case and Marty’s op-ed. Osgood read the piece\, and knowing Garbus’ reputation\, reopened the case. In 2018\, DNA evidence revealed Jane Doe’s attacker. \nJane Doe’s fight for justice took nearly two and a half decades.
