SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Juneteenth Performance: Last Chance Café
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions for a performance of Last Chance Café\, part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Marty Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nDon’t miss this incredible evening of drama\, live music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, best-selling author\, journalist and social commentator Ellis Cose\, award-winning playwright Susan Charlotte\, and the cast. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis\, the cast includes Nesha Ward\, Larry Pine\, Michael Citriniti\, Greg Mullavey (“Mary Hartman\, Mary Hartman”)\, and Jon Stewart. \nTickets\n$25 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Opus 118 Harlem School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nOpus 118 was founded in 1991 by Roberta Guaspari with a mission to provide quality music instruction and teacher development in an environment that nurtures excellence and creativity\, without regard to economic status\, age\, race\, religion\, gender\, sexual orientation\, or physical ability. \nSince its founding\, Opus 118 has helped more than 6\,000 students from the greater Harlem area reach their potential through free in-school group music lessons and highly subsidized private lessons making music affordable and accessible to our community. For the purposes of this talk we will feature our founder\, alumni and students and how music has changed their lives. \nFor more than 31 years\, Opus 118 Harlem School of Music has used music education and string playing to promote the love of music\, improve academic performance\, provide positive alternatives to drugs and violence\, build confidence and self-esteem and help children explore the world. Opus 118’s work is documented in the Academy Award-nominated documentary\, Small Wonders\, and in the feature film Music of the Heart\, starring Meryl Streep in her Academy Award-nominated performance as Roberta Guaspari\, Opus 118’s Co-Founder and Artistic Director. \nStarting only as a day program\, in 2022\, due to parent demand\, Opus 118 Harlem School of Music added an After-School Program\, which expanded on the success of our nationally recognized In-School Music Program. This additional After-School Program allowed us to offer opportunities for New York City public school students to obtain one-on-one and ensemble instruction after-school. This program is a valuable resource for children who may not have music programs in their schools at all\, and instruction for adults who wish to learn a musical instrument or advance their musical skills. Having been in continuous operation since 1991\, Opus 118 alumni have gone on to have illustrious careers in every career imaginable\, of which many return back to our program becoming Master Teacher such as Amanda Negron and Nicole Wright who will be featured today. As we continue to grow\, Opus 118 remains committed to East Harlem as we continue to provide access and opportunity to music education to all the students of our community. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection\nRehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Book Discussion Group: 'A Year to Live' by Stephen Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join Leader Dr. Nori Rost every first Sunday for a new book discussion group exploring A Year to Live by Stephen Levine. \nFree and open to the public. First Sundays: February 4\, March 3\, April 7\, May 5\, June 2\, ending on July 7 \nAbout A Year to Live\n“Stephen Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity\, truth\, and an open heart. I can think of no one better qualified to help us enrich our lives through embracing the mystery of death.”—Ram Dass \n“A Year to Live is a poetic and deeply passionate exploration into what creates human suffering. It is also a lyrical and generous-spirited guide to life.”—San Francisco Examiner \nIn A Year to Live\, Stephen Levine\, author of the perennial bestseller Who Dies?\, teaches us how to live each moment\, each hour\, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed\, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year\, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. \nMost of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore\, laugh off\, or deny our grief over the fact that we are going to die\, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work\, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us\, we will not feel that it has come too soon. \nAbout Stephen Levine\nStephen Levine (1937–2016) was an American poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques. His bestselling books in the United States and Europe (including Healing into Life and Death and A Gradual Awakening) are considered groundbreaking in their field. He also collaborated with his wife and spiritual partner\, Ondrea\, on a number of influential works such as Who Dies? and Embracing the Beloved.

SUMMARY:SOUND~EARTH~MOTION: Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance Performance and Gala
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Time Lapse Dance ensemble with live musical performances by composer Matthew Burtner\, MET Orchestra musicians\, and pianist Jeffrey Middleton. \nSchedule\n7:00-8:00pm – Performance\n8:00-9:30pm – Gala Reception with Artists \nAbout SOUND~EARTH~MOTION\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture presents an evening by Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble exploring human entanglement with nature. Featured works highlight the climate-engaged collaboration between choreographer Jody Sperling and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. Arbor dwells on the intimacy of trees. In Wind Rose\, dancers render changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight\, sound\, and touch. A rare reprisal of Sperling’s masterful solo Clair de lune evokes the shimmer of a moonlit sky. \nAll of these works feature transformative costumes that abstract the essence of human movement into elemental and organic forces\, with the dancers variously appearing to conjure a growing forest or hovering storm clouds. The company’s unique style of movement draws inspiration from and furthers the art form created by dance icon Loie Fuller (1862-1928) a century ago. \n“conjures a timelapse photograph of a flower bud opening to full blossom”\n—Karen Hildebrand\, Fjord \n“[Sperling’s] mission is climate activism through body consciousness”\n—Janet Koplos\, Arts Writer & NYSEC Member \nFollowing the performance\, enjoy a sparkling evening\, from wine to conversation\, with the artists\, fellow Time Lapse Dance fans\, and members of the Ethical NYC community. Light dinner fare served at this cocktail-style gala. \nBuy Tickets\nClick here to purchase tickets on Eventbrite \nArtists & Performers\nTime Lapse Dance Dancers: Frances Barker\, Anika Hunter\, Maki Kitahara\, Nicole Lemelin\, Jody Sperling\, Sarah Tracy & Rathi Varma \nMET Orchestra String Quartet: Bruno Eicher (violin)\, Sarah Vonsattel (violin)\, Kari Jane Docter (cello) \nCostumes: Mary Jo Mecca (construction)\, Gina Nagy Burns (textile artist) \nThis program is made possible in part by an ongoing eco-artist-residency at The New York Society for Ethical Culture\, with the generous support of the Peck Stacpoole Foundation\, and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

SUMMARY:Climate and Energy Game Night with City Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Hosted the City Atlas network! \nIf we are to confront the climate crisis at scale\, we will need to collaborate and coordinate across fields\, neighborhoods\, cultures and industries. A serious energy transition demands such coordination (that’s what Energetic the game teaches us). Collaborative games and policy making forums (such as deliberative citizens’ assemblies) point the way forward to enable us to do this at scale. They orient participants towards long-term goals and enable them to work through scenarios of the coming decades\, in order to discuss what policies will be most efficient and successful at reducing emissions while maintaining public support. \nWe can teach everyone in the US (and then around the world) how to fix climate change with accurate\, updatable info\, scaling from a 2.5 hr game to a monthlong series of workshops\, matched to the region in which they live. And it’s fun! \nEnergetic as seen in New York Times\, on NY1\, and featured in METROPOLIS \nRSVP\nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite!
