DESCRIPTION:Join the The Park Slope Woodwind Quintet at the New York Society for Ethical Culture for its first concert as a dedicated contemporary music ensemble! \nThe program features works by NYC-based composers Manuel Ciordia and Yoshi Weinberg\, as well as US-based composers Jane Kozhevnikova\, Gary Nash\, and Nathan Bueno de Mesquita. \nInitially established for a 2021 outdoor concert series outside a stoop in Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, as live performances began to emerge amid the COVID-19 pandemic\, The Park Slope Woodwind Quintet (PSWQ) has since become a consummate interpreter of standard repertoire equally at home on the street or in lauded venues across New York City’s boroughs. Now\, the PSWQ redefines itself as a contemporary music ensemble aimed at lifting up its community and amplifying local artistic voices. \nThe PSWQ’s member’s collective education spans degrees from The Juilliard School\, Manhattan School of Music\, Mannes School of Music\, and the New England Conservatory\, among others. Romantically attached\, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school\, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” \nWhile Andy is off at war Melissa marries\, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries\, becomes a successful attorney\, gets involved in politics and\, eventually\, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile\, her marriage in tatters\, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos\, drinks more than she should\, and becomes estranged from her children. \nEventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair\, but it is really too late for both of them. DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nThe first of three talks exploring the concept of land ethics\, as established in the modern era by Aldo Leopold in his perennial classic A Sand County Almanac. Land ethics expand our ethical frameworks\, historically limited to human relationships in Western culture\, to include nature. The first talk will focus on discovering and cultivating land ethics within our own personal narratives and daily lives. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director\, Terrence Malick\, as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. Carey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. He’s a certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation and a certified Master Naturalist in New York state where he is also a licensed trail guide. Moss is a Humanist Chaplain and Webby Award-winning storyteller unwavering in his pursuit to relate stories that connect us to our humanity. A natural explorer\, he uses playful inquisition to examine the complexity of the human condition and the intrinsic meaning of life. Moss maintains an interdisciplinary practice of storytelling\, street philosophy\, and practical altruism. In 2015\, Moss created The Adventures of Memento Mori podcast. The consequence of this deep meditation on impermanence was life changing. Uncertain of what happens after we die\, Moss has dedicated his life to the positive changes that can happen while we’re still alive. \nAbout Terry Perlin\nTerry M. Perlin\, Ph.D. serves as Consultant in Medical Ethics at The Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati. He is Emeritus Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Research Fellow at Scripps Gerontology Center\, having been a faculty member at Miami University in Ohio from 1975-2009. He has held teaching and research positions at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; Wright State University School of Medicine; and the University of California\, San Francisco. Terry received his B.A. in History\, magna cum laude\, from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History of Ideas from Brandeis University. For ten years he was Ethics Consultant for the American Association of Blood Banks. Terry is the author of Clinical Medical Ethics: Cases In Practice and trains hospital ethics committees in case consultation. \nMonthly Collection\nProject Renewal \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. He attended The Humanist Institute and holds a Doctor of Ministry in Interfaith Pastoral Counseling as well as a J.D. degree. Richard is a long-time member of the Ethical Culture Society of Westchester and served as president of the American Ethical Union\, the national federation of Ethical Societies\, from 2012 to 2015. \nMusical Guest: Jake Shulman-Ment\nBorn in New York City\, violinist Jake Shulman-Ment is “considered one of the finest klezmer fiddlers on the planet” (Jon Kalish\, NPR). He tours and records internationally as a soloist and with Midwood\, Daniel Kahn\, Frank London\, Di Naye Kapelye\, Joey Weisenberg\, and Duncan Sheik. He was featured in Csaba Bereczki’s full-length documentary film Soul Exodus\, and performed on screen in HBO’s Succession and Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman. A widely sought-out teacher of the klezmer fiddle tradition\, Jake has been a faculty member of KlezKamp\, KlezKanada\, Klezmer Paris\, the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival\, Yiddish Summer Weimar\, Fiddle Tunes\, Yiddish New York\, and other festivals throughout the globe. He collected\, studied\, performed\, and documented traditional music in Romania as a Fulbright scholar\, and has lived and traveled in Hungary and Greece\, learning traditional violin styles. In 2018 he received the prestigious NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship in Folk/Traditional Arts. Jake’s debut solo album\, A Redele (A Wheel) (Oriente Musik\, 2012) was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award. His new group\, Midwood\, released its first album\, Out of the Narrows\, (Chant Records) in May 2018. \nMonthly Collection\nCamp Linden \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community.
