SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Michael H. Posner: 'Election 2026: The Role of Business Leaders in Protecting Our Democracy'
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nNOTICE: This program will be held in the ECFS gymnasium. Please enter the Society’s western/ramp entrance on West 64th Street and follow our ushers and signs to find the room. \nUS-based businesses have been the greatest beneficiaries of the post-World War II international order\, rooted in human rights and the rule of law. Businesses thrive in stable\, democratic societies\, with strong institutions – independent courts\, a free press\, and a vibrant civil society. While many of these core democratic safeguards are being challenged\, business leaders have been reluctant to stand up. As the November mid-term elections loom on the horizon\, Professor Posner will discuss the risks to fair elections and what business leaders can and should be doing to support our democracy. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nCan’t join us in-person? RSVP to watch on Zoom here. \nAbout Michael H. Posner\nMichael Posner is the Director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights\, the first human rights center at a business school. He also is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance. From September 2009 until March 2013\, he served in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy\, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. State Department. Before going into government\, he was the Executive Director and then President of Human Rights First\, a U.S.-based human rights advocacy organization. He is the author of Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Marc Kagan: A Journey Through the Labor Movement in Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nThe talk will be partially an autobiography\, or memoir\, of Marc Kagan’s almost fifty years in the labor movement\, his entry coming just a few years after the NYC fiscal crisis\, which marked the advent of the (still-ongoing) Neoliberal era. Kagan will also provide a critique and assessment of the labor movement today\, and its responses to this moment of crisis\, as we struggle both to preserve and reinvigorate democracy and address massive inequality. Under what circumstances might labor be in the forefront of this struggle\, as it was in Minneapolis this winter? \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nCan’t join us in person? RSVP to watch on Zoom. \nAbout Marc Kagan\nRadicalized by his experiences as a tenant organizer when “the Bronx was burning\,” Kagan “joined the working class.” He was a transit worker for almost twenty years\, and was briefly a top officer of TWU Local 100. He taught high school Social Studies for ten years; Zohran Mamdani later pronounced him his favorite high school teacher. He got his Ph.D. in History from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2023\, teaches Labor Politics at Brooklyn College\, and is the author of Take Back the Power: The Fall and Rise and Fall of NYC’s Transport Workers Union Local 100. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Diane Debrovner: 'Seeing One Another: Inspiring Curiosity and Empathy Through Children’s Books'
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nDiane Debrovner shares the story behind her co-authored middle grade novel\, Roxie In Color\,  about a 12-year-old who wants to be known as more than “the girl with blind parents.” Inspired by an article in Parents Magazine\, the book explores misconceptions about people who are blind\, and the discrimination they still face. Many families live in fear of Child Protective Services because their ability to keep their children safe is questioned. Free with RSVP>> \nCan’t attend in person?  Livestream link >> \nLuendu/Journey\, livestreamed from Kinshasa:\n“In the ancestral conceptions of my people\, we do not only get born once but a few times during our life time. Birth-like rituals are reenactments where the spiritual and the material world converge. For me\, artistic and performative practices are also such converging points and moments of transformations. When imbalances are weakening our communities\, spirits appear to recreate a prosperous life between humans and all living beings. There is a strong interdependency between the DR Congo’s soil and today’s digital world and communication systems: a vast amount of the resources that fuel the contemporary come from the DR Congo\, be it coltan\, copper\, or other resources. \nIn the last thirty years\, millions of people have died in my country because of the global hunger for these resources. “Luendu” is a performance that revolves around these topics and activates mythological figures to create connections between times and spaces and the possibility to engage beyond recurring violence. It is a reinterpreted birthing ritual that shows the triumph of life over death\, of resistance over oppression\, of resilience over exploitation.” \n— Nada Tshibwabwa \nThis event is co-sponsored by Jungledom Network\, with support from Ethical.NYC’s Young Ethical Explorers. Admission is free with reservations. Donations are welcomed for COFECO\, an organization supporting Congolese women. \n~~~~+++~~~~ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis work is supported by Mwano Studio\, Jungledom Network and New York Society for Ethical Culture and is made possible\, in part\, by the Franklin Furnace FUND 2025-26\, supported by SHS Foundation\, Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the members and friends of Franklin Furnace Archive. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier and Our Youth Climate Corps: New Directions in Youth Climate Education
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nWhat if the world is not something we simply inherit\, but something we help create? Join us for a conversation with four members of our Youth Climate Corps as they reflect on what they have learned through hands-on work in environmental restoration\, civic engagement\, and community leadership. Rather than accepting the world as fixed and determined by others\, these young leaders have discovered that ordinary people can shape their communities and influence the future. Their stories offer a hopeful reminder that democracy\, the environment\, and even our shared future are not finished products—they are living projects that each generation has the power to remake. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nRSVP and Join on Zoom Here \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: How to be Gay (Even if You're Not a Homosexual)
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nAt a time when many people still struggle to live openly and authentically\, “How to Be Gay: Even If You Are Not a Homosexual” explores a deeper and more universal question: what can all of us learn from those who have had to fight simply for the right to exist as themselves? \nDrawing from the writings\, reflections\, and lived experiences of gay thinkers\, activists\, and ordinary people\, this talk examines how the struggle for self-acceptance often produces profound insights into courage\, identity\, dignity\, community\, and freedom. More than a talk about sexuality\, this is a conversation about becoming fully human — about resisting shame\, rejecting conformity\, standing up for the humanity of others\, and discovering what becomes possible when people refuse to hide who they are. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nRSVP to Join on Zoom \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Daniel Wortel-London: 'The Beloved Economy: Ethical Economic Thought and the Rebuilding of Community'
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nWhat is the economy? At its most basic\, it’s how we meet our material needs. But some of these methods have come at a profound cost—fracturing communities\, degrading environments\, and concentrating wealth at the expense of shared flourishing. Drawing on historical and contemporary research\, this talk explores a different tradition: ethical economic thinking that centers community\, care\, and democratic participation. What would it mean to build an economy we actually love—one that serves people and places\, not just growth? \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nRSVP to Join on Zoom \nAbout Daniel Wortel-London\nDaniel Wortel-London\, Ph.D. is a historian\, policy researcher\, and Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Bard College. His book\, The Menace of Prosperity: New York City and the Struggle for Economic Development\, 1865–1981 (University of Chicago Press\, 2025)\, examines the political economy of urban development. He has worked as a policy specialist with the Center for the Advancement of a Steady State Economy and the Wellbeing Economy Alliance\, and his writing has appeared in The Nation\, Jacobin\, the Washington Post\, and Dissent. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy.
