DESCRIPTION:Following the death of my 34-year old son Matthew in 2015\, after his ten year struggle with serious mental illness\, my family and I created a foundation in his memory\, and began to work on issues of serious mental illness to find ways to keep other families from suffering as we had\, and other people with SMI from suffering as Matthew had. A core project of ours has been a documentary\, The Definition of Insanity (watch online here!)\, the story of a remarkable judge in Miami-Dade County Florida\, who has transformed the way the criminal justice system there has dealt with those with SMI\, finding ways both to safe lives and save money—with lessons that are especially relevant in the times after George Floyd’s murder and the need for police and criminal justice reform. I will talk about our journey\, the impetus to turn grief to purpose\, and what we can learn from Miami-Dade. \nNorman Ornstein is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. He is a contributing editor and writer for The Atlantic and has been an election eve analyst for CBS News and BBC News. He is also Chairman of the Board of the Campaign Legal Center. His family foundation\, the Matthew Harris Ornstein Memorial Foundation\, sponsors a summer debate institute for public school kids in the Washington area through the Washington Urban Debate League\, and created and funded the documentary The Definition of Insanity\, that was broadcast on PBS in April 2020 and tells the story of how a remarkable judge in Miami-Dade County\, Florida\, transformed the way its criminal justice system deals with those with serious mental illness\, saving lives and saving money at the same time. \nHe served as a senior counselor to the Continuity of Government Commission and co-directed the AEI-Brookings Project on alternatives to the Independent Counsel Act. Mr. Ornstein led a working group of scholars and practitioners that helped shape the law\, known as McCain-Feingold\, which reformed the campaign financing system. He was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004. His many books include Intensive Care: How Congress Shapes Health Policy; The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track\, with Tom Mann; and The New York Times bestseller\, It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism\, also with Tom Mann (2012\, named Book of the Year by Ezra Klein’s Wonkblog\, one of the ten best books on politics in 2012 by The New Yorker\, and one of the best books of 2012 by The Washington Post. An expanded edition\, retitled It’s Even Worse Than It Was\, was published in 2016. His latest book\, with EJ Dionne and Tom Mann\, One Nation After Trump: A Guide for the Perplexed\, the Disillusioned\, the Desperate and the Not-Yet-Deported (2017) was immediately on the New York Times and Washington Post bestseller lists. Ornstein has a BA from the University of Minnesota and an MA and PhD from the University of Michigan. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from his alma mater in 2007. DESCRIPTION:I eagerly look forward to my part-time leadership with the New York Society. The end of this month will mark a major milestone in my life and career. After 47 years\, I plan to retire as the leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, New Jersey. With the exception of Felix Adler and Algernon Black here at the New York Society\, and Henry Neuman\, who served for many years as the leader of the Brooklyn Society\, it is possible that my professional tenure in the Ethical Movement is the longest in its history. I began my professional career as a Leader-in-training here at the New York Society in 1969\, traversing 51 years and six decades. It’s been a long time. My retirement from leadership at Bergen\, which has been the mainstay of my career\, provides a very appropriate opportunity to reflect on the vocation of Ethical Leadership from the inside. I look forward to sharing with you in personal terms the fulfillment\, glories\, and challenges\, too\, of life in Ethical Culture\, a life of innumerable experiences and human encounters. \nDr. Joe Chuman has been a Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture since 2008. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as many other progressive causes. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Alice Smith: Discrimination Dressed as Protecting Civil Rights (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The 1965 Voting Rights Act resulted in a massive increase in voting and voter registration amongst people of color\, non English-speaking citizens\, those with disabilities\, especially in the states and counties covered by the Voting Rights Act. \nIn 2013\, after Shelby County v Alabama ruled the formula for the covered states unconstitutional\, the covered states reverted to their former vote suppression tactics dressed up in protecting the integrity of the vote. My talk will focus on how some of us fought back. \nJustice Ginsburg was right when she wrote in the dissent in Shelby County: \n“Throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.” \nAlice Schaffer Smith founded National Voter Corps in November 2016 after watching vote suppression deny citizens their right to vote. National Voter Corps is a national\, non-partisan\, umbrella organization which successfully has connected volunteers with non-partisan organizations to fight voter suppression and work towards 100% voter participation. Reclaim Our Vote\, a non-partisan voter rights organization based in Virginia\, is one example where NVC volunteers initiated a California committee that has written millions of letters and made phone calls to disenfranchised after the notorious Shelby County v Holder decision in Georgia\, Alabama\, Florida\, North Carolina\, Texas\, Louisiana and South Carolina since 2018. \nAfter being required to resign her IBM position as a systems engineer (due to pregnancy)\, once her 2 daughters were in school\, she attended law school. Her legal career spanned 36 years as in-house lawyer in information technology companies in California and England. She continues to be active in human rights organizations including Greater Good Haiti\, Human Rights Watch\, League of Women Voters\, Amnesty International and the ACLU of Northern California. She earned a BA from Smith College and a JD from Golden Gate University Law School. \nCurrently\, she is an avid bridge player\, bird-watcher\, political volunteer and proud grandmother of five. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit the Ethical NYC YouTube channel.
