DESCRIPTION:Join us in-person or online this Sunday\, October 3 for our Sunday Platform address by Society Leader and long-time reproductive rights activist Dr. Nori Rost examining the ethical foundation of choice: \nIn recent months we have seen attacks on women’s right to reproductive freedom\, most notably in the egregious legislation passed in Texas last month which essentially makes it illegal to obtain an abortion in the state with draconian punishments for those seeking an abortion and the doctors who would help them. \nWhat does our ethical orientation teach us about choice and how can we make our voices heard? Join us in the wake of marches for reproductive freedom across the country (including here in NYC) as we explore this important\, controversial topic. \nDr. Nori Rost is Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Prior to her arrival at the Society\, she served as the settled minister at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, Colorado. \nDr. Rost has been a prominent activist for reproductive freedom since attending her first NARAL event when she was 17. She has served on the National Clergy Advisory Board for Planned Parenthood\, and was volunteer chaplain at Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains (PPRM) in Colorado Springs\, CO. \nIn 2015\, when a domestic terrorist attacked the local Planned Parenthood clinic\, killing three people\, Dr. Rost held a vigil that attracted several hundred people and garnered international media attention\, including The New Times\, the New York Post\, the Guardian\, and Al Jazeera. She was also interviewed about the shooting by WNYC. \nDr. Rost also led a group of supporters to PPRM every March 10\, National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day\, to deliver thank you cards\, chocolates\, and balloons to the hard-working staff. She was also a featured speaker at the Colorado We are Women Rally in 2012 and served on the planning team for the Colorado Springs Womxn’s March\, 2017-2020. \nDr. Rost holds a Master of Divinity from Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado and a Doctorate of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. A champion of justice and equity for all\, Dr. Rost is the recipient of the Tri-State NAACP Award of Excellence in Religious Affairs and the Indy Legacy Award for her work in the queer community. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. DESCRIPTION:In this bitterly funny novel\, a writer finds himself tossed into a chaotic world of schoolboys by a diabolical professor who wishes to reduce him to childishness. Published in Poland in 1937\, Ferdydurke catapulted the young author to fame. Deemed scandalous and subversive by Nazis\, Stalinists\, and the Polish Communist regime in turn\, the novel was banned in Poland for decades. It has nonetheless remained one of the most influential works of 20th-century European literature. \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: How Fighting Terrorism Has Changed America
DESCRIPTION:We have just passed the 20th anniversary of the terrorist assaults on the United States. That episode was a transformative event in American history. In many ways we are not the same nation we were after the attack that we were before. \nSince 9/11 we have engaged in two wars—and lost. Many thousands of lives have been lost and more than $7 billion spent. The “war on terror” has changed our national priorities and policies. It also has raised questions about America’s purpose and what it means to be an American. It has evoked a mindset that encourages the use of force and looks more favorably on authoritarianism at home and abroad. It has also greatly altered our nation’s standing in the world and how we are assessed by others. \nMy address will explore these issues as they pertain to our understanding of what it means to be an American and our role among nations. \nDr. Joe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. As an activist\, Dr. Chuman has worked on behalf of human rights and civil liberties and in opposition to the death penalty\, as well as on many other progressive causes. He founded the Northern New Jersey group of Amnesty International in 1974\, and currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County.
