SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Nori Rost: Second Verse\, Same as First (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nAs we enter year 3 of the COVID-19 pandemic\, it can seem as if we have gotten caught in a loop\, drearily repeating the same story over and over. On February 2\, Punxsutawney Phil\, the celebrity groundhog from the Pennsylvania town of the same name\, will have been enticed out of his den to read the future for 2022. Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow\, Dr. Rost will reflect on what to do when the pandemic seems unending\, when each day looks like the one before and you’re stuck in a rut. The 1993 movie “Groundhog Day” will be liberally referenced. \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nUntil coming to join us as Leader at NYSEC\, Dr. Nori Rost served the All-Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs\, CO as their settled minister for 13 years. Prior to that she was a minister with Metropolitan Community Church (a queer Christian denomination) for almost 20 years. \nShe is passionate about social justice and has been involved in social rights activism since she was 17. She is an outspoken advocate for justice and equity and has received many awards and recognition for her work. \nNori holds a Master of Divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado\, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. In addition\, she holds a Certificate for Spiritual Direction from the Benet Hill Center in Colorado Springs\, Colorado. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Steve Serling \nPartner Organization of the Month Collection: The Innocence Project \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Colloquy: "Freedom of Speech in the Era of Cancel Culture" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Share your reflections on the topic based on quotes\, parables\, poems\, etc. presented by the moderator. There are no right or wrong answers\, just your individual response shared in a contemplative atmosphere. Matthew Benson hosts. \n***** \nToday’s subject is “Freedom of Speech in the Era of Cancel Culture”. The United States has always prided itself on freedom of speech. In other countries citizens can be arrested and incarcerated for speaking their minds about their country\, religion\, history\, events of the day and defying power structures just to list a few examples. \nWith the advent of the internet and all of its instantaneous\, forever recorded and documented capabilities\, everything that someone types in an email or says near a recording phone or videocamera can be captured\, stored and reposted for the purposes of condemning or out-and-out obliterating the reputation of an individual and “canceling” them. We see this with artists\, academics\, journalists\, organizational leaders and politicians constantly today. One tweet\, one post of outrage\, one biased article in a newspaper\, magazine or social media platform can instantly and virally pass judgment on an individual without any context or— outside of platforms with journalistic ethics that source and verify veracity—judgement can be passed dishonestly. \nIn high minded circles\, pre-internet\, “gossip” was considered to be tawdry\, dubious hearsay and not to be readily trusted. All of us have at some point experienced being on the wrong side of “gossip” that has resulted from misunderstandings or ill intentions of the gossip spreader. Our standing in a group would be shaken\, but people at least we had the opportunity to refute and quash inaccurate gossip before it spread too far. \nThe question we have before us today in our colloquy is is the current practice of cancelling individuals ethical? To what degree should it be tolerated in our media and our communities? We have all said foolish things in the past. All of us continue to evolve and change our views and would not wish to be judged today by something we said many months or years ago. Should individuals be suspended\, fired or otherwise ousted from a community because of something they mused aloud about in a country that protects freedom of speech? As Americans\, we have the freedom to speak our minds and offer our opinions about absolutely anything and it is good to bring crimes and dishonesty to light\, but at what point does cancel culture overreach? Are we in danger now of living in a society where no one freely speaks their mind\,and no one has the courage to stand up to unfair cancellations out of fear that they too may be canceled? \nThis is the subject of our colloquy today. \nI will play a brief interlude of music and allow us to contemplate how we feel about cancel culture. We will ruminate on when it goes too far and also reflect on any positive aspects to this new reality of cancel culture and what we hope the future of this social phenomenon to be. \nClick here to join at start time | ID 814 7073 5630 | Passcode 158119\n \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. Zoom is available for tablets and smartphones in both main app stores\, Apple and Google Android. Attendees don’t need to register for a Zoom account although it’s free and helpful. To join a meeting\, simply click the event’s invitation link above.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Richard Koral: "Celebrating Darwin Day\, or How I Learned to Love Change" (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nDarwin’s proofs overthrew the traditional view that the world was created as we saw it; that there was a natural order we could rely on. Richard holds degrees from New York University and New York Law School\, and a Doctor of Ministry in interfaith pastoral counseling from the Hebrew Union College. SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series w/ Leader Joe Chuman: Zachary Sklar & Michael Smith on Michael Ratner (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at the Puffin Cultural Forum have announced the Puffin Interview Series with our own Leader Dr. Joe Chuman! \nOn the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format\, all streamed live on Youtube. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. \n\nMore Interviews TBA!\nAbout Moving the Bar: My Life as a Radical Lawyer by Michael Ratner \nMichael Ratner (1943–2016) was one of America’s leading human rights lawyers. He worked for more than four decades at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) becoming first the Director of Litigation and then the President of what Alexander Cockburn called “a small band of tigerish people.” He was also the President of the National Lawyers Guild. In 2007 he won the Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship. \nRatner handled some of the most significant cases In American history. This book tells why and how he did it. \nHis last case\, which he worked on until he died\, was representing truth-telling whistleblower and now political prisoner Julian Assange\, the editor of WikiLeaks. \nRatner “moved the bar” by organizing some 600 lawyers to successfully defend habeas corpus\, that is\, the ancient right of someone accused of a crime to have a lawyer and to be brought before a judge. \nZachary Sklar\, edited “Moving the Bar” for OR Books\, and Michael Smith\, who wrote the book’s introduction. \nBuy the book here. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. He currently teaches on human rights at Columbia University and Hunter College\, and has taught at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, and many other periodicals. Joe currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. \nWatch Live Here!

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Boat by Nam Le\, Stories 5-7 (Online)
DESCRIPTION:With a jaw-dropping versatility of voice and point of view\, The Boat is an extraordinary work of fiction that guides us to the heart of what it means to be human. The seven stories take us across the globe\, from the slums of Colombia to Iowa City; from the streets of Tehran to a foundering vessel in the South China Sea. \nAmong many accolades this book won Australian author Nam Le the 2008 Dylan Thomas Prize\, the world’s top cash prize for young writers. Michiko Kakutani (New York Times) called the opening story “a singular masterpiece.” \nAbout GLD \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. SUMMARY:Joe Chuman: "The Radical Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We Do Not Know" (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Platform in-person and online! \nWe celebrated Martin Luther King’s birthday last month and February is denoted as national Black History Month. In conjunction with spirit of season and with a renewed concern about racial issues\, I want to take a fresh look at the commitments of Martin Luther King. \nWhat most people know about King issues from his “I Have A Dream” Speech given at the march on Washington in August\, 1963. Hence King is often depicted as a “dreamer.” Yet\, my contention is that King was far more radical in his analysis of American society than the official story portrays. King held to a notion of structural racism rooted in capitalism and aligned with American militarism. It is not the King usually celebrated on official holidays\, but it is necessary that we look at this aspect of his life if we are to grasp the scope of King’s work and the farther reaches of his thoughts. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Dan Hanson \nPartner Organization of the Month Collection: The Innocence Project \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.
