SUMMARY:Film Focus: "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution" (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Notice: This program has moved entirely online via Zoom\, and will now begin at 4:00pm. \nCamp Jened was a summer camp in the Catskill Mountains established in 1952 to serve teens with disabilities. In the 70s\, Jack Birnbaum and Larry Allison took on leadership\, endeavoring to developing a camp culture that was more unstructured and free-spirited. Under this dynamic duo\, the camp provided a fertile environment for political and social discussions\, inspiring many to become activists. Judith Heumann\, Bobbi Linn\, and other Jenedians in fact formed the Disabled in Action advocacy group in 1970\, part of the grassroots beginning that led to the 1990 passage of the American Disabilities Act. \nThe documentary\, set at the camp in 1971\, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and a nomination for an Academy Award as Best Documentary Feature soon followed. Written\, directed\, and co-produced by Nicole Newnham and James LeBrecht\, the film’s executive producers were Barack and Michelle Obama\, under their Higher Ground Productions banner. \nWatch the film on Netflix on your own before joining the discussion. Ellen McBride leads. \nSuggested Readings: \nThe A.D.A. at 30: Beyond the Law’s Promise – The New York Times \nFulfilling the Promise of the Americans With Disabilities Act – The Conversation \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527 \nIf you would like to lead a discussion\, please contact jrose@nysec.org

SUMMARY:Dr. Cheryl Kunis: 'Beware of The Medical-Industrial Complex: Resisting the Monetization of Our Health Care System'
DESCRIPTION:The United States has the worst healthcare system among our peer countries. Why? Because our medical care\, and the insurance we rely on to pay for it\, have become massive businesses—that are only growing larger. \nThat medical-industrial complex now has its sights set on Medicare\, and many Americans don’t realize it. Their latest efforts are called Direct Contracting Entities and ACO Reach. But these companies’ plans go far beyond just Medicare\, and threaten Americans of all ages. \nBy working together\, we can stop these companies from monetizing every last bit of medical care in the United States. Join the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Ethical Action Committee at this free educational webinar to learn what you can do to fight back. \nAbout Our Speaker: Dr. Cheryl Kunis \nCheryl L. Kunis\, M.D.\, M.S. strongly believes that medicine is an art\, a science\, and a humanitarian profession\, and should never be a for-profit business run by corporate America. Hoping to reintroduce humanism\, morality\, and justice into American healthcare\, she lectures on bioethical issues in nephrology\, the history of medicine\, health policy\, and healthcare reform. \nShe is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine Emerita at Columbia University\, Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai\, and a member of the Mount Sinai Independent Physicians’ Association. She also serves as bioethicist for the Program to Increase Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) at NYU and Downstate Medical Centers. Dr. Kunis is a Board Member of Community Impact at Columbia University\, winning The Dr. Maurice Russell Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to public service. \nShe has been a Board member of Physicians for a National Health Program since 2014\, is director of their National Issues Working Group\, and received the PNHP Health Justice award in 2021. \nDr. Kunis’ goal is to educate the public and medical professionals to help create an equitable universal healthcare system in the US believing healthcare injustice is the greatest injustice of all. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 868 2488 0882

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Spring Festival: Humanity as a Force of Nature (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! Note: This program will begin at 11:30 in Adler Hall. \nHosted by Leader Dr. Nori Rost! \nHumans can operate as a collaborative force with nature\, as Nature. \nWe are a powerful force\, and we can put our powers to good use rather than—intentionally or not—for destructive purposes. We are wonderful plants that can continue to grow and blossom for the good. \nThis year’s festival is part of a global celebration of the “Season for Nonviolence” that honors and celebrates the peaceful work of Mahatama (Mohandas) Gandhi and Martin Luther King\, Jr. — established in 1998 by Ayun Gandhi\, Mahatama Gandhi’s grandson. Preparing for the Spring Festival has been part of the learning experience of our Young Ethical Explorers (YEE) as they’ve studied aspects of this Season for Nonviolence\, which began January 30 and culminates on April 4. \nToday Ethical children\, families\, and members lead us in an exploration of healthy ways to grow into the future. YEE will share a peace song: “Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me\,” honoring the Gandhi/King Season for Non-violence\, which YEE children have been learning about: https://ethical.nyc/season-for-non-violence/ \nThe Festival will feature eco-dance-choreographer Jody Sperling of “TimeLapse” Dance. With our focus on peace\, we will envision a future that is vibrant\, healthy and humane! \n \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Steve Serling \nMonthly Collection: Sunrise NYC \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: 'Mao II' by Don DeLillo (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This novel explores the nature of crowds and their relation to personal and collective identity. \nAccording to Thomas Pynchon “This novel’s a beauty. DeLillo takes us on a breathtaking journey\, beyond the official versions of our daily history\, behind all easy assumptions about who we’re supposed to be\, with a vision as bold and a voice as eloquent and morally focused as any in American writing.” \nAbout GLD \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater: 'Lungs' by Duncan Macmillan
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and discussion series returns in-person with Lungs by Duncan Macmillan: \nA man and a woman are having a conversation —not an argument or even a discussion\, they insist\, a conversation. Not an ordinary conversation\, though. It spans an entire lifetime\, and topics range from staples like commitment and family to the ethics of having a child in an increasingly environmentally and politically stressed world. It’s a conversation that is by turns and sometimes simultaneously revealing\, funny\, and heartbreaking. \nAfter the play\, member Betsy Ungar will moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored in the work. Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner. \nMatinee encore on Sunday\, April 10\, 1:30-3:00pm. \nMembers $5\, Guests $10 (at door) \nCOVID-19 Notice: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required to attend.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Sam Rivera: The Impact of Overdose Prevention Centers (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWe will be discussing the operation of two overdose prevention sites in New York\, the first in this nation’s history. We will discuss the sites’ success using our most recent data. Additionally\, we’ll highlight our impact on the surrounding communities\, our organization’s innovative procedures as it pertains to overdose intervention\, as well as the need for other jurisdictions to open similar sites. \nSam Rivera has over 29 years of progressive experience in social services. His primary focus of expertise lies in Criminal Justice/Reentry\, HIV/AIDS\, Harm Reduction\, Addiction/Recovery\, and Mental Health. He currently serves as the Executive Director of New York Harm Reduction Educators and Washington Heights Corner Project\, two merging harm reduction organizations that provide services to active drug users and sex workers in Northern Manhattan and The South Bronx\, many of whom are low-income or homeless as well as of color and LGBTQ. \nHe brings to this role his several decades of cutting-edge service provision experience and a commitment to social justice. He has dedicated his professional career to ameliorating the harms associated with the War on Drugs\, racism/sexism\, structural inequality\, and mass incarceration and will continue to work to end systemic as well as systematic barriers to populations that are most vulnerable. \nIf you question whether harm reduction works\, I can’t help but wonder if you have ever actually seen what happens in these spaces. We promote health\, safety\, and dignity\, and it works. It is simple\, beautiful\, and it changes people’s lives -Haven Wheelock \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nMonthly Collection: Sunrise NYC \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

\nAfter the play\, Leader Dr. Nori Rost will moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored in the work. Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner. \nPremiere on Friday\, April 8\, 7:00-8:30pm. \nMembers $5\, Guests $10 (at door) \nCOVID-19 Notice: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required to attend.

SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas: Difficult Conversations About Aging (Online)
DESCRIPTION:There are many difficult issues and ethical dilemmas related to aging that call for thoughtful discussion. Although a single presentation cannot address all the issues\, we can start the process through this shared exploration and learn from one another. What we anticipate we might do in a hypothetical situation can be very different from what we think\, feel\, and do when faced with the challenge. Listening to a wide range of perspectives better equips us to make decisions that reflect our sense of reason\, ethics\, and morality. Having conversations like this can ultimately be helpful when the times of crisis occur. Social worker and Society member Sandi Sacks leads. \nThis optional questionnaire (PDF) will help prepare for the discussion. Please consider filling it out beforehand and emailing it to to Sandi. All responses are confidential and will not be used with your name. \nSandi Sacks\, LMSW has spent the past 45 years working as a licensed social worker with a specialty in the field of Aging. Her experience includes everything from bereavement counseling\, Program Director of “Boomers” and “Older Adult” educational and recreational programs\, facilitating support groups\, teaching older adults\, training Master level social workers\, and creating and running intergenerational workshops and volunteer programs. \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 868 4443 0081 | Passcode 600242\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the ID number above. \n\nWhat does one do when there’s no clearly defined ethical road to take? Exploring Ethical Dilemmas features speakers from a variety of backgrounds — medicine\, law\, business\, science\, education\, the arts\, social work\, etc. — who share their experience and knowledge of ethical issues in those fields. Monthly\, 3rd Monday.
