SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: 'Mao II' by Don DeLillo (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This novel explores the nature of crowds and their relation to personal and collective identity. \nAccording to Thomas Pynchon “This novel’s a beauty. DeLillo takes us on a breathtaking journey\, beyond the official versions of our daily history\, behind all easy assumptions about who we’re supposed to be\, with a vision as bold and a voice as eloquent and morally focused as any in American writing.” \nAbout GLD \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Sam Rivera: The Impact of Overdose Prevention Centers (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWe will be discussing the operation of two overdose prevention sites in New York\, the first in this nation’s history. We will discuss the sites’ success using our most recent data. Additionally\, we’ll highlight our impact on the surrounding communities\, our organization’s innovative procedures as it pertains to overdose intervention\, as well as the need for other jurisdictions to open similar sites. \nSam Rivera has over 29 years of progressive experience in social services. His primary focus of expertise lies in Criminal Justice/Reentry\, HIV/AIDS\, Harm Reduction\, Addiction/Recovery\, and Mental Health. He currently serves as the Executive Director of New York Harm Reduction Educators and Washington Heights Corner Project\, two merging harm reduction organizations that provide services to active drug users and sex workers in Northern Manhattan and The South Bronx\, many of whom are low-income or homeless as well as of color and LGBTQ. \nHe brings to this role his several decades of cutting-edge service provision experience and a commitment to social justice. He has dedicated his professional career to ameliorating the harms associated with the War on Drugs\, racism/sexism\, structural inequality\, and mass incarceration and will continue to work to end systemic as well as systematic barriers to populations that are most vulnerable. \nIf you question whether harm reduction works\, I can’t help but wonder if you have ever actually seen what happens in these spaces. We promote health\, safety\, and dignity\, and it works. It is simple\, beautiful\, and it changes people’s lives -Haven Wheelock \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Barbara Carlsen \nMonthly Collection: Sunrise NYC \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated\, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo view previous Sunday Platform addresses and interviews\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas: Difficult Conversations About Aging (Online)
DESCRIPTION:There are many difficult issues and ethical dilemmas related to aging that call for thoughtful discussion. Although a single presentation cannot address all the issues\, we can start the process through this shared exploration and learn from one another. What we anticipate we might do in a hypothetical situation can be very different from what we think\, feel\, and do when faced with the challenge. Listening to a wide range of perspectives better equips us to make decisions that reflect our sense of reason\, ethics\, and morality. Having conversations like this can ultimately be helpful when the times of crisis occur. Social worker and Society member Sandi Sacks leads. \nThis optional questionnaire (PDF) will help prepare for the discussion. Please consider filling it out beforehand and emailing it to to Sandi. All responses are confidential and will not be used with your name. \nSandi Sacks\, LMSW has spent the past 45 years working as a licensed social worker with a specialty in the field of Aging. Her experience includes everything from bereavement counseling\, Program Director of “Boomers” and “Older Adult” educational and recreational programs\, facilitating support groups\, teaching older adults\, training Master level social workers\, and creating and running intergenerational workshops and volunteer programs. \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 868 4443 0081 | Passcode 600242\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the ID number above. \n\nWhat does one do when there’s no clearly defined ethical road to take? Exploring Ethical Dilemmas features speakers from a variety of backgrounds — medicine\, law\, business\, science\, education\, the arts\, social work\, etc. — who share their experience and knowledge of ethical issues in those fields. Monthly\, 3rd Monday.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Joe Chuman: A Glimmer of Light in a Dark Sky (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWe are all aghast at the unprovoked war in Ukraine —an example of raw aggression perpetrated by an autocrat and driven by an egotistic vision of reclaiming the putative glory of Russia’s past. \nIn recent decades we have had a lot to fear in the rise of authoritarian leaders and regimes\, Russia prominent among them\, and the retreat of liberal democracy. Nowhere is this more fretful than right here in America. \nOne should never argue that suffering should be required for the sake of building a more beneficent world. But the horrors of the war in Ukraine (as I write this we cannot know how it will end) have enabled people to witness naked authoritarianism in action. As a result\, the West—indeed\, much of the world community—has united to condemn the war and isolate Putin. This reaction may bring lasting dividends and may augur well for a rebirth of democracy. \nI will explore these issues and our personal and political responses to the war. \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. \nDuring his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture.\nCurrently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online! – Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424 \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nMonthly Collection: Sunrise NYC \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.

SUMMARY:Film Focus: The Power of The Dog (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Notice: This session has been moved online-only and rescheduled for 2:00pm. \nDon’t turn away! Forget John Ford and John Wayne. This film is like no other American Western you have seen; one you will not forget. The Power of the Dog deconstructs the mythic cowboy film genre in a gripping\, propulsive drama directed by the fearless Jane Campion\, who creates a gorgeous\, powerful\, sweeping\, touching\, tricky\, and finally redemptive masterpiece. \nThe first important ethical question in the film is posed at the very beginning in a voiceover\, and should neither be missed nor forgotten. As the story unfolds\, other issues about masculinity\, sexuality\, misogyny\, self-reliance\, cruelty masking self-hatred\, and more are explored\, symbolized and/or resolved. \nEvery element is outstanding. Actors Benedict Cumberbatch\, Jesse Plemons\, Kirsten Dunst\, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are superb. The musical score’s nervous rhythms\, the breathtaking cinematography\, and most of all\, Campion’s script and direction provide a huge emotional and thoughtful experience. \nWatch the film beforehand and then join our lively online discussion about its themes. Marge Burman leads. Janet Rose moderates. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527 \nIf you would like to lead a discussion\, please contact jrose@nysec.org

SUMMARY:SSB Film Screening: Mothers of Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Ethical NYC Social Service Board. \nMany parents find it hard to imagine being away from a child for a week. Now\, imagine being separated for 10 or 20 years. Mothers of Bedford explores the effects of a long-term prison sentence on the mother-child relationship: \nFilmmaker Jenifer McShane spent four years following five incarcerated mothers at the New York maximum-security penitentiary\, Bedford Hills Correctional Facility She interviewed them\, their children and other family members\, the children’s caregivers\, and prison employees and volunteers. \nEighty percent of women in US prisons today are mothers of school-age children. McShane’s documentary depicts the stresses that prison places on a family while also painting a beautiful picture of the power of a mother’s unconditional love as they take parenting classes\, enroll in in-prison education\, phone in for parent-teacher conferences\, spend time with their kids at the prison’s Children’s Center. We see the struggles and joys these women face as prisoners and mothers. \nFollowing the film\, the Social Service Board’s Bonnie Bean and Marlene Williamson will lead a discussion about the effects of incarceration on parents and children. \nVisit our website to learn more about the Social Service Board\, including their Televisiting Program that helps children maintain contact with an incarcerated family member. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: 'The Cave' by José Saramago (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The struggle of the individual against bureaucracy and anonymity is one of the great subjects of modern literature\, and Saramago is often matched with Kafka as one of its premier exponents. But this comparison doesn’t convey the warmth and human dimension of many of his novels. Those qualities are particularly evident in this brilliant allegory\, which links the sterility of modern life to the parable of Plato’s cave. \nIt took Saramago’s consummate skills to convert this ancient parable into a novel with impact\, hope and charm. \nAbout GLD \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella.
