He examines the social\, cultural\, and economic forces that shaped New York filmmaking\, from city politics to union regulations\, and shows how decades of low-budget independent production taught local filmmakers how to capture the city’s grit\, liveliness\, and allure. He reveals the importance of “race films”—all-Black productions intended for segregated African American audiences—that not only helped keep the film business afloat but also nurtured a core group of writers\, directors\, designers\, and technicians. DESCRIPTION:In-person and online — Learn how you too can be a Good Neighbor! \nFred Rogers had it right when he sang that last line of his Mister Roger’s Neighborhood song\, asking his viewers to extend a hand to one another as neighbors. \nThe Social Service Board of the New York Society for Ethical Culture is proud to introduce our Good Neighbors Initiative\, partnering with Residents Associations to bring programs and services to our neighbors in NYCHA’s Amsterdam Houses\, Amsterdam Extension\, and Harborview Terrace. Our goal is to help our neighbors and fulfill our longstanding mission to “build listening relationships to develop responsive programs that alleviate the symptoms of systemic injustice to promote a more compassionate city.” \nThis Sunday Platform will share the high points of the Ethical Society’s 140-plus years of social service since our founding by Dr. Felix Adler\, an inheritance of ethical action we aim to carry forward. Richard holds degrees from New York University and New York Law School\, and a Doctor of Ministry in interfaith pastoral counseling from the Hebrew Union College. He is the Leader Consultant to the Social Service Board and numerous committees in the Society. Active with the American Ethical Union\, Richard served on its Board as president from 2012 to 2015. SUMMARY:Speaking of Science: 'Understanding the Effects of Arsenic on Aging' with Jane Disney and Thomas Meuser (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly series exploring current discoveries and debates in science. \nJane Disney\, Ph.D. received a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Genetics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Washington State University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Environmental Health at MDI Biological Laboratory. In addition\, she directs the activities of the Community Environmental Health Laboratory. She is the co-developer of the citizen science online data portal\, Anecdata.org. \nSince 2000\, she has worked with multiple community partners\, identifying\, and helping to remedy threats to public health and the clean waters on and around Mount Desert Island\, including bacterial pollution at local swim beaches and red tide blooms in Frenchman Bay. With a 5-year grant from the National Institutes of Health\, she launched “All About Arsenic” in 2018\, a project which engages secondary-school teachers and students as citizen scientists in collecting well water samples for analysis of arsenic and other toxic metals and sharing their findings in their communities. \nIn a new collaboration with University of New England\, Dr. Disney plans to focus on the health of Mainers age 55+\, with research to uncover the connection between environmental exposures to toxic substances and the aging process.Thomas Meuser\, Ph.D. directs the University of New England Center for Excellence in Aging and Health\, a “center without walls” which promotes applied scholarship\, service-learning\, and intergenerational engagement around healthful aging. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 889 8668 1869 | Passcode 518208\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above.
