SUMMARY:City of Forest Day with Artist in Residence Jody Sperling\, Time Lapse Dance\, and Young Ethical Explorers
DESCRIPTION:City of Forest Day is a city-wide day of community events celebrating urban forest and NYC’s seven million trees. \nAt the gathering at Lighthouse Park on Roosevelt Island\, at 2:00PM Society Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble will perform two ecologically themed works exploring the connections between humans and their habitat. \nAll ages welcome! Our Young Ethical Explorers will also be taking a field trip to Roosevelt Island for the day. RSVP with Youth and Families Coordinator Audrey Kindred at akindred@nysec.org to join. \nAbout the Performance: \nRadically transformed by costuming fashioned from hundreds of plastic bags\, the dancers of Plastic Harvest appear as frolicking and foraging creatures arisen from the anthropocene. The piece creates a surreal spectacle while provoking contemplation about the beauty of that—and who—society throws away. \nFollowing\, the company performs Arbor which explores human kinship with trees. In voluminous costumes meticulously painted with tree limbs (by textile artist Gina Nagy Burns and costume designer Mary Jo Mecca)\, the dancers spiral\, billow\, and encircle one another in gusts of action resembling timelapses of arboreal motion. Both works deepen the climate-engaged collaboration between choreographer Jody Sperling and composer Matthew Burtner. \nIN THE EVENT OF RAIN\, PERFORMANCE WILL BE HELD IN GOOD SHEPARD CHURCH\, 543 Main Street\, Upstairs Sanctuary\, Roosevelt Island \nCan’t make it to Roosevelt Island? SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater: Satchmo at The Waldorf by Terry Teachout
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and talkback series continues on October 20 and October 22 with two performances of Terry Teachout’s Satchmo at The Waldorf: \nSATCHMO AT THE WALDORF is a one-man\, three-character play in which the same actor portrays Louis Armstrong\, the greatest of all jazz trumpeters; Joe Glaser\, his white manager; and Miles Davis\, who admired Armstrong’s playing but disliked his onstage manner. It takes place in 1971 in a dressing room backstage at the Empire Room of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel\, where Armstrong performed in public for the last time four months before his death. Reminiscing into a tape recorder about his life and work\, Armstrong seeks to come to terms with his longstanding relationship with Glaser\, whom he once loved like a father but now believes to have betrayed him. In alternating scenes\, Glaser defends his controversial decision to promote Armstrong’s career (with the help of the Chicago mob) by encouraging him to simplify his musical style\, while Davis attacks Armstrong for pandering to white audiences. \nAfter the performance\, we’ll host a lively discussion of the ethical issues raised by the play. \nPerformed by C.K. Allen • Narrated by Bonnie Bean • Directed by Tai Thompson • Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner \nSuggested Donation: Members $10; Non-Members $15 \nPurchase tickets on Eventbrite here! \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required to attend. Masks are optional but strongly encouraged.
