SUMMARY:Elise Auerbach: Human Rights in Iran at a Critical Juncture
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nIran recently experienced an upheaval as millions of ordinary Iranians protested the death in custody of a young Iranian-Kurdish woman\, Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Joined to their outrage at her death were simmering grievances over the authorities’ pervasive human rights violations against any expression of dissent or non-conformity with the government’s rigid strictures on acceptable conduct. The authorities carried out a predictably harsh crackdown on protesters. \nElise Auerbach\, Amnesty International USA’s country specialist for Iran\, joins us to discuss how at this juncture\, human rights activists both in Iran and out must figure out how to carry on their efforts to end the government’s violations and ensure that all Iranians can enjoy and exercise their basic human rights. \nAbout Elise Auerbach\nElise Auerbach is Amnesty International USA’s country specialist for Iran. Elise has been a country specialist in the AIUSA Middle East Coordination Group since 1995. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Elise is also the acting chair of the AIUSA country specialist committee that oversees the work to provide support for those seeking asylum and other forms of immigration relief. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: Leader Dr. Richard Koral \nMonthly Collection: Amnesty International \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required. Masks are optional but encouraged. \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:AEU All-Societies Platform: Human-I-Tree (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Join us online! \nDecember is a month that moves us toward Winter’s balance of light and dark with short days and full nights. For many\, it’s a time to mark the rhythm of our days\, years\, and seasons. \nDecember is also a time to turn toward each other and gather together in celebration and remembrance of our interconnection. Our All-Society Platforms have become one place we connect with each other as an Ethical movement. \nJoin Audrey Kindred\, the American Ethical Union\, and Societies from across the country on December 31 at 11:00 AM ET for the next All-Society Platform: Human-I-Tree. \nNotice: There will be no in-person watch party for this AEU All-Societies Platform. \nClick Here to RSVP! \nAbout Human-I-Tree\nHuman-I-Tree is an original vision grown through community engagement at the New York Society for Ethical Culture by Audrey Kindred‘s collaboration with artists\, activists\, and children of all ages. It honors how every breath we take as humans is integral to the life of trees. \nAudrey brings Felix Adler into dialogue with ecological hero and 2004 Nobel Prize for Peace recipient Wangari Matthai by proposing that “bringing out the best in one another and thereby ourselves” is not truly peace unless we honor our interconnectedness by respecting the earth together. Human-I-Tree branches into a whole family of tree concepts that can inspire our human community building processes. \nThis tree-inspired platform includes gifts from several artists with whom Audrey has collaborated for Human-I-Tree. Among them are Simba Yangala\, Jody Sperling\, Alexa Babakhanian\, Annie Lanzillotto\, and Bonita Oliver. \nAbout Audrey Kindred\nAudrey Kindred invites the Ethical Culture diaspora to “come tree with me!” \nAudrey has led Ethical intergenerational programming for 25 years and currently serves the New York Society for Ethical Culture. She is the co-author\, with Dr. Anne Klaeysen\, of a brand new course published by the American Humanist Association called “Humanist Family Life Ceremonies.” \nShe is currently completing a master’s degree that centers mindful Climate Justice education. Audrey is focused on how creativity and embodiment impact our ethical development. She honors retired Ethical Leaders Lisel Burns and Martha Gallahue as her Ethical roots. \nMonthly Collection: Amnesty International \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community.
