SUMMARY:October Book Club with Carey Russell: An Introduction to 'A Sand County Almanac' by Aldo Leopold (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In his introduction to the 1987 edition of A Sand County Almanac\, Robert Finch writes: \nNo other single book of American nature writing – with the exception of Walden – has achieved such lasting stature as A Sand County Almanac. Since it was first published by Oxford in 1949…it has become an established classic in the field…and providing the core of modern conservation ethics. \nTrue to its name “The Almanac”\, as many call it for short\, is a collection of brief essays and journal entries\, divided into three sections. Our October book club meeting\, led by our friend\, October 27th Sunday Platform speaker\, and DendroLab founder Carey Russell\, will examine selected readings from each section to provide an overview of the book’s content and major themes. \nPlease feel free to read these in advance\, or join us without\, as several will be read aloud during the online event. Please note that page numbers are intentionally not included\, since these can vary by edition. \nTogether we’ll discuss the following selected readings: \n\nForeword\nFrom Part I: December (including “Home Range”\, “Pines Above the Snow”\, and “65290”)\nFrom Part II: Thinking Like a Mountain (found within the section Arizona and New Mexico)\nFrom Part III: The Land Ethic (including “The Ethical Sequence”\, “The Community Concept”\, and “The Ecological Conscience”)\n\nRSVP to Join Online\nClick Here to RSVP to Join via Zoom \nAbout Host Carey Russell\n \nCarey is a naturalist\, photographer\, and filmmaker. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director Terrence Malick as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. \nCarey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. SUMMARY:Young Ethical Explorers - Green Halloween: Sustainable Costume Making
DESCRIPTION:FREE – Art\, snacks\, and Earth-friendly fun — Newcomers are ALWAYS welcome! \nIt’s an unfortunate fact that Halloween is terrible for the environment: most decorations and costumes are used only once before being thrown away\, and they’re often made of plastics and harmful chemicals that can persist in the environment for centuries. \nSo\, let’s do our part to green Halloween! Join us for our annual Young Ethical Explorers DIY sustainable costume workshop\, where kids of all ages are invited to turn recycled materials of all kinds–cardboard\, fabric\, plastic\, old clothes\, and more–into their own unique costume creations. The Society will provide a trove of donated materials and attendees are also invited to bring your own! \nRSVP\nSpace is limited! Click here to RSVP on Eventbrite \nAbout Young Ethical Explorers\nYoung Ethical Explorers is the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Humanist Sunday school for ages 3-11. The Society’s Youth and Family programs empower young people and their parents in their ethical development\, friendships\, community service\, and social activism. We welcome all families who want their children of all ages to develop caring relationships\, gain an appreciation for diversity\, and explore their personal beliefs in a progressive\, non-sectarian\, Humanist setting. \nSessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, volunteer projects\, and field trips. \nFor more information about our youth and family programming\, please contact Youth and Family Programs Coordinator Audrey Kindred at ethicalfamilies@nysec.org or visit ethical.nyc/families.
