How do we defuse and redirect Jewish fear in light of its increasing weaponization? What is—and should be—the role of both mourning and rage in Palestinian and in Jewish communal politics? SUMMARY:Lunch with the League of Women Voters: What's On the Ballot?
DESCRIPTION:Join the League of Women Voters of the City of New York to learn about the 2024 General Election NY State and NY City Ballot Proposals. \nSpeakers: \nAdrienne Kivelson has been a volunteer with The League of Women Voters for more than 50 years. In 1979 Adrienne wrote the first edition of What Makes New York City Run?\, a citizen’s guide to understanding local government\, for the New York City League of Women Voters. She re-wrote the book in 1991\, 2001\, 2019 and contributed to updated versions in 2022 and 2024. \nProfessionally\, Adrienne is a writer and public affairs specialist with extensive experience in community and government relations. She was the District Administrator for two Congressmen\, Chief of Staff for a member of the City Council\, Legislative Assistant to a New York State Assemblyman and Associate Director of the New York State Division for Women. In addition\, she was a Community Builder Fellow at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and served in a variety of management and policy positions with the New York State Office of Rent Administration. \nJenna Lauter is a Policy Counsel at the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU)\, where she focuses on issues related to reproductive rights and birth and family justice. She joined the NYCLU as an Equal Justice Works Fellow advocating against family separation and surveillance by the family regulation system. During law school\, Jenna helped combat fees charged to incarcerated New Yorkers as a member of her school’s Community Advocacy Lab Clinic. She also interned with the Brennan Center for Justice\, Mecklenburg Defenders\, Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid\, and the NYCLU. Prior to law school\, Jenna worked for several years in government\, politics\, and advocacy at the city\, state\, and national levels. \nAllie Swatek As the Director of Policy and Research\, Allie Swatek leads the team that conducts intergovernmental outreach\, performs policy and legislative analysis\, and produces original\, data-driven research on voting and campaign finance issues. Join us for our annual Young Ethical Explorers DIY sustainable costume workshop\, where kids of all ages are invited to turn recycled materials of all kinds–cardboard\, fabric\, plastic\, old clothes\, and more–into their own unique costume creations. Land ethics expand our ethical frameworks\, historically limited to human relationships in Western culture\, to include nature. The first talk focused on discovering and cultivating land ethics within our own personal narratives and daily lives. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director\, Terrence Malick\, as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. Carey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. He’s a certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation and a certified Master Naturalist in New York state where he is also a licensed trail guide. At live meetings\, guests are welcome—first visit is free; a nominal guest fee of $5 is charged on subsequent visits. This fee may be applied to annual dues if paid on the meeting day.

As a result\, well-organized and well-funded groups have increasingly dominated public discourse. This shift has led to notable outcomes\, such as the banning of books\, restrictions on students learning about slavery\, multiple efforts to dismantle the Voting Rights Act\, and limitations on women’s reproductive rights. These developments have been linked to the decline of progressive civic organizations that traditionally countered these trends. How did this happen\, and what steps can be taken to restore civic engagement and protect our democracy? \nRSVP to Watch Online\nClick here to RSVP on Zoom \nAbout Curt Collier\nCurt Collier is the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County and a passionate advocate for community redevelopment. He works as a consultant\, helping nonprofits enhance their capacity to make a positive impact. Additionally\, Collier is a professor of Ethics and Ethics in Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University and serves as a Community Planning Specialist for the National Park Service. He leads various initiatives\, including job training programs for New York City schools\, support for environmental nonprofits in New Jersey\, and projects aimed at improving scientific literacy among young adults. Collier is also the consulting Leader for the Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley\, and the Austin Ethical Society. \nMonthly Collection\nMarch for Our Lives \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy.
