DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and talkback series continues with David Auburn’s Summer\, 1976 \nJoin us for a reception 30 minutes before showtime\, and for a post-reading talkback with the cast and director exploring the ethical questions raised by the play. \nAbout Summer\, 1976\nA deeply moving\, tenderly insightful play about friendship\, memory\, and the small moments that can change the course of our lives forever. Over one fateful summer\, an unlikely friendship develops between Diana\, a fiercely iconoclastic artist and single mom\, and Alice\, a free-spirited yet naive young housewife. SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: Why Ethical Culture's Experiment with Humanism Needs to End
DESCRIPTION:Twenty years after Felix Adler’s death\, the Ethical Culture movement began to shift away from its founder’s philosophical focus. Dr. Howard Radest\, a leading advocate for this change\, documented the transition in his 1982 article Ethical Culture and Humanism: A Cautionary Tale. \nWhile many Ethical Leaders still embrace Humanism\, the movement’s decline can be linked to this shift. Why wasn’t Adler a Humanist\, and how did his philosophy differ? Is it time to abandon Humanism and reclaim the movement’s original identity? Leader Curt Collier will discuss the history of this shift and explain why he believes we need a return to our philosophical roots. \nAbout Curt Collier\nCurt Collier is the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County and a passionate advocate for community redevelopment. He works as a consultant\, helping nonprofits enhance their capacity to make a positive impact. Additionally\, Collier is a professor of Ethics and Ethics in Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University and serves as a Community Planning Specialist for the National Park Service. He leads various initiatives\, including job training programs for New York City schools\, support for environmental nonprofits in New Jersey\, and projects aimed at improving scientific literacy among young adults. Collier is also the consulting Leader for the Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley\, and the Austin Ethical Society. \nJoin Online\nClick Here to RSVP on Zoom \nMonthly Collection\nBrennan Center for Justice \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Coming of Age
DESCRIPTION:“Coming-of-age” marks a young person’s transition from childhood to adulthood. Families are invited to enroll their tweens and early teens in our coming-of-age program\, whose guiding principle is to provide a safe and creative environment\, and ethical grounding\, to empower every young adult to blossom within our community. The age at which this transition takes place varies in society\, as does the nature of the transition. It can be a simple legal convention or part of a ritual as practiced in many societies and religions. \nIn our diverse community\, we welcome young people who are seeking an opportunity to mark their life path with a process and celebration focused on \n\nSelf-inquiry\nWorld awareness\nPersonal and social responsibility\nCommunity service\n\nRecognizing that children mature at different rates\, we meet with children and parents to determine when a child is ready\, and the curriculum is geared to the needs of the individual and family. With a Humanist anchor\, we will explore a world of ideas and values together.

SUMMARY:Theater - Cause Celebre Productions and Ethical Culture Present: 'Here We Are' and 'For Your Pleasure Madame'
DESCRIPTION:Stop by Ethical Culture on Monday\, February 24 as our partners at Cause Celebre Productions open their season on a romantic note–well\, sort of! Don’t miss these two short plays about love\, marriage\, and thoughts of divorce set in Paris and NYC. \nStarring Tony Nominee Penny Fuller\, Drama Desk Award winner Bob Dishy\, and Allison White! \nQ&A follows with the cast\, writer\, and director! \nAbout Here We Are\nTwo newlyweds are taking a train to NYC\, where they will honeymoon and embark upon a new life. By the end of the ride\, the couple realize that marriage may be more difficult than they expected! And their excitement changes into a kind of apprehension. When the couple utters the words “Here We Are” at the end \, one wonders if they are really thinking “Where are we?!” \nAbout For Your Pleasure Madame\nA woman in her 70s\, who has just lost her husband\, enters a Parisian hat store. The owner is a young young woman who is on the phone with her husband. The American widow\, who is quite vulnerable\, has a steely facade and an acerbic sense of humor. But as she tries on each hat\, a layer of defense is pealed away\, and she finally reveals how in love she was with her husband. \nThe French woman too opens up–about how unhappy happy she is with her older husband. She also reveals the history of the shop\, which was shut down by her mother in 1940 when the Nazis marched down the Champs-Elysees. When her mother reopened the shop\, it became more of a home for the French woman. And the hats had become a way for her to connect with others\, especially on this day\, especially with the American woman. As the story progresses they see that they have more in common that they realized at first. \nTickets (In-Person and Livestream)\nClick here to purchase tickets on Eventbrite \nCredits\n“Here We Are” by  Dorothy Parker\nDirected by Antony Marsellis\nStarring Penny Fuller and Bob Dishy\n\n\n“For Your Pleasure Madame” by Susan Charlotte\nDirected by Antony Marsellis\nStarring Penny Fuller and Allison White\n\n\nStage directions for both plays by Michael Citriniti.
