SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Lindsey Price Jackson: 'Community Justice: Asking\, Belonging'

But how can a government-controlled justice system truly engage with everyday residents in a meaningful way? SUMMARY:Young Ethical Explorers: Self-Empowerment\, Self-Advocacy\, and Conflict Resolution with Gabriella Belfiglio: ‘Standing Up For Our Values’
DESCRIPTION:Newcomers are always welcome! \nEvery other week we’re joined by Gabriella Belfiglio\, a long-time anti-bullying and self-defense teacher (and award-winning poet!) who will lead children in becoming empowered to express themselves and resolve conflicts with confidence and compassion–to become ‘upstanders’ not merely bystanders. \nChildren will learn how to stand up for themselves and others\, and gain resilience through skill-focused exercises and explorations led by Gabriella. This will be joyful and fun\, but will empower children with essential tools to face difficult moments\, hurt feelings\, and challenging peer pressures at school\, on the playground\, and beyond. \nFREE! Recommended for Ages 7-13 \nTo RSVP\, or for any questions\, please email Youth and Family Programs Coordinator Audrey Kindred at akindred@nysec.org. \nAbout Young Ethical Explorers\nYoung Ethical Explorers is the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Humanist Sunday school for ages 3-11. Sessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, and field trips. \nRSVP is essential to guarantee your place and for planning purposes. If you are enrolled for the season or are members of Ethical NYC your spot is guaranteed. To RSVP as a guest\, become a member\, or enroll in season\, please contact Audrey at ethicalfamilies@nysec.org. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome!

SUMMARY:Concert - Jody Sperling\, Time Lapse Dance and Matthew Burtner: Memories of Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Recently returned from a two-week\, three-city tour of Egypt\, Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance (TLD) ensemble are offering a FREE concert in partnership with The New York Society for Ethical Culture\, the site of their ongoing Eco-Artist-Residency. The company was following in the footsteps of Loïe Fuller who toured Egypt with her dancers in 1905! Memories of Egypt features a TLD world premiere in Fuller style\, repertory favorites\, and a souvenir from the journey. The company’s seven luminous dancers are joined by Emmy Award-winning composer Matthew Burtner for a transporting evening of live music and dance. \nThe tour almost didn’t happen! A day before the company was to leave for Egypt\, the US State Department terminated the award that was partially funding the tour. You can read our story in Medium and Dance Magazine . You can still support TLD’s fundraising campaign to make-up for the lost federal funds.  \nThe evening’s highlight is the world premiere of Fractal Memories\, created for the Fuller documentary Obsessed with Light. The dance is a contemporary tribute to Fuller\, choreographed by Sperling illuminating the entanglement of bodies through time. The culminating moment is a striking reimagining of Fuller’s Fire Dance. \nIn Serpentine Swells\, the company riffs on a spiralling melodic line evoking the crest and fall of ocean currents. This ensemble improvisation was presented in Egypt as musical collaboration between Butner and Egyptian oud player Aly Eissa. \nThe evening also reprises Arbor\, dwelling on the intimacy of trees\, and Sperling’s hypnotic solo Piece for Northern Sky\, a meditation on planetary motion. \nAll of these works feature transformative costumes that abstract human movement into elemental and organic forces\, with the dancers appearing to conjure a growing forest or a swirling inferno. The company’s unique style of movement draws inspiration from and furthers the art form created by dance icon Loie Fuller (1862-1928) a century ago. \nTickets – FREE!\nClick here to RSVP and donate on Eventbrite \nThis program is made possible in part by an ongoing eco-artist-residency at The New York Society for Ethical Culture and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

SUMMARY:Fight for Our Rights: Free Mahmoud! w/ People's Forum
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, March 22nd\, for a powerful event in support of Mahmoud Khalil\, Palestine\, and civil liberties. Together we will defend free speech and reaffirm our collective commitment to ending the genocide of the Palestinian people. \nHear from prominent activists\, artists\, human rights advocates\, and members of Mahmoud Khalil’s legal team as we stand together against repression and strengthen our movement for a free Palestine. \nOn the evening of March 8th\, plainclothes agents with the Department of Homeland Security illegally arrested Mahmoud Khalil\, a leading activist at Columbia University\, at his home\, asserting that they were revoking his Green Card. At the time of the writing of this letter\, he remains in ICE custody. \nThis is an unprecedented action that signals the dawn of a new wave of attacks on both the Palestine solidarity movement and our civil liberties. \nSince Mahmoud’s arrest\, tens of thousands have taken to the streets and over three million have signed a petition demanding his release. Meanwhile\, the Trump administration has continued its assault on our students. At Columbia University\, over two dozen students were suspended\, expelled\, or have had their degrees revoked over their support for Palestine and just last night the Department of Homeland Security raided the dorm rooms of two other student activists. \nIt is no coincidence that the escalation of attacks on the Pro-Palestine movement is happening right now. Since March 2nd\, Israel has blocked all humanitarian aid into Gaza and since March 12 has completely shut off electricity\, causing a total blackout throughout all of Gaza. Hunger is growing\, water is running out\, hospitals are not functional\, and all of Gaza sits in darkness. \nWe have a duty to fight against genocide and the stakes have never been so high. \nJoin us to discuss Mahmoud’s case and the impact it has on Free Speech\, the assault on our students\, and the current state of affairs in Palestine. \nDoors at 8:00pm \nRSVP\nRSVP with a $20 Donation to the Middle Eastern Children’s Alliance. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Email info@peoplesforum.org for support with donation costs. \nRSVP on Eventbrite Here

SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Productions Presents: Last Chance Café
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions and Ethical Culture for a performance of Last Chance Café\, part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Marty Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nDon’t miss this incredible evening of drama\, live music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, former ACLU President Susan Herman\, award-winning playwright Susan Charlotte\, and the cast. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis \nStarring Jack Wetherall (the title character in The Elephant Man on Broadway) and Nesha Ward \nWith an added element of dance and music featuring Broadway tap dancer Gene Castle and guitarist Michael Citriniti \nFollowed by a discussion with: Martin Garbus and former ACLU President Susan Herman. \nTickets\n$25 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant.
